@@mattfuller7313 I've no interest in how it would've gone down in other countries. What I saw from the footage was hundreds of people making it more about themselves than Buddy. You could see after a few minutes that he was pretty fed up with people smacking him on the head and it didn't take a lip reader to see that he was mouthing the words "f**king hell" in frustration.

As a North American this is something that would NEVER be allowed in pro sports (you do see it in U.S. college sports sometimes) which makes it all the more special. I remember I attended a Canadian university championship final basketball game where they had security stop the kids coming onto the floor to celebrate with their fellow students which really ruined the atmosphere. I get it, Safety is paramount, people will act recklessly in the moment because of the monumental occasion. I highly doubt anyone running on the ground had any intentions of hurting anyone else on the ground. You have that many people all running towards the same point there’s bound to be accidents. Zach Touhy’s behaviour and actions spoke volumes of how people should conduct themselves in such situations. Stay calm, walk away and protect yourself. The AFL didn’t have an adequate plan. Just as well they didn’t schedule it at the MCG vs the Hawks on a Friday or Saturday night. AFL deserves criticism for their lack of planning but the fans that ran onto the ground and did a few harmless things don’t.
@R3LiC77
@R3LiC77 2 года назад
@AFL Rookie I said I highly doubt any one had "intentions" of hurting anyone else on the ground. Intentions would imply that was what they planned to do from the outset. I would say it was more in the heat of the moment fans would have acted poorly as they interacted with Geelong players. Any fan that assaulted anyone else on the ground player or not should get their full whack from the law and the AFL.

In fairness to the security company. A replay of the goal, show a person running at least 10 to 20 meters on to the ground, and his head is a 45 degrees watching the ball go though the goal, at full stride. So they had to have at least that distance on the guards.

I was in the middle of the pack at 0:32 with my red and green clapper and had the experience of my lifetime! Sure it was concerning but everyone was respectful of security when they got told to head off the field, I even thanked one of the security blokes for letting such an amazing event like this happen. This is what sports are all about! It’s a shame some people appreciate what it’s truly all about, not just winning titles and medals

I was there and tbh it wasn’t that bad. Kids weren’t going into the big crowds where people were getting shoved to each other. Not everyone had that intention to do that. Many just ran to a certain point to celebrate. No one from what I saw and know got hurt, people were just celebrating and having a good time. People were also watching out for one another and asking are u okay or chatting with you whilst celebrating. Another thing is that most of the people being intense and going towards buddy and in tight crowds, were people like me who are 35 and under. I am 22 and I was fine with it all. My mum who is 47 wanted to stay back and thats fine. This experience now tops my AFL GF experience as it was just amazing and after 2 years of no normal afl games, it was amazing to have some old normal back and to be with fellow swans fans and afl fans

The A.F.L. dodged a bullet. Just because it happened in Australia doesn't mean a tragedy was possible, kids being trampled on, whatever. They should have let them run on to the ground a couple of minutes after the final siren so that they could set up a cordoned off area in the middle of the ground. The A.F.L. was more interested in the promotion of the event than public safety.

Feel like some of this is misleading... The players didn't leave the ground because it was dangerous. Pretty sure by that stage things had settled down and people were leaving the field. They went around because they were trying to get people to leave the field and didn't want to give fans any reason to loiter or run back on. At least that's what I saw.

Is it me, or did the AFL have a better grasp of this 24 years ago? When Plugger kicked his 1300th, security ran out to him immediately, all of the swans players near him ran straight out to him to form a barrier around him, and then they took him off. All of the Collingwood players got off as well. They seemed to manage that tons better here, to where I can see Damo’s and Kanye’s points. How did they get it right back then where they didn’t here?

Was more dangerous for the fans in my opinion, nobody intended to hurt the players but nobody cared about other fans at the fence where i was people were getting crowd crushed down the aisle. When buddy kicked 100 goals the gates were opened and I don’t see why they weren’t opened there.

Overall it was honestly harmless. Tripping and falling and accidents are inevitable in these sorts of things. I tumbled to the ground while I was running because I'd had a few too many. But all of us fans had no ill intentions, we were just there to enjoy the moment. Agreed that the AFL's plan with the scurity guards was poor. The seccies that were there knew they weren't gonna do anything and so they completely gave up on it. Something should have been done to ensure the players stayed safe. But at the end of the day, fortunately nobody got seriously injured, no ambulances were called, and everyone who was there enjoyed the moment. Damo is right; if someone had been seriously hurt or crushed in the crowd, it would be a different story. But everyone honestly carried themselves well, and ensured as best as possible that they were not putting any others in harm's way. Now let's move on now and look back on this for what it is: an iconic, unforgettable, once-in-a-generation moment involving an immortal of our game.
