I love Charlie Christian; I listened to him and picked up a bunch of his licks early my playing. He's ideal for adding some jazz vocabulary to your playing. Nice lesson.

Very good study you made of Charlie Christian, particulary interesting I found the musical use of the Db mi arpeggio over the Eb7.chord getting the 7, 9- and sus , great sound. I noticed he used many dim arpeggios as well. I think he must have influenced nearly every jazzcat in that Era and even up to now. His style is so musical, logical and creative, thanks for your thorough work and post, greetings Vic.

Hey Adrian, good to hear from you amigo! Great lesson! Something to shoot for. Now if I can just get my pinky to go where it's supposed to quickly on these chords I'll be doing all right. I checked out some of Charlie's videos. Zowie, absolutely smooth, precise & totally scary, in a good way! MONSTER! Thanks for bringing him to my attention. Hope all is well, by4now, Dave in the Adirondacks Oh yeah, I regularly use your Robert Johnson inspired lesson as part of my warm up now that I've got it down pretty well. Adrian you are a a star,this is essential- watching absolutely wonderful ,I absolutely love this for many reasons; for jazz guitar history ,harmonic understanding and practicality in guitar technique.Love Charlie Christian ,Solo Flight which is fab (did you know Charlie learned Django Rienhardt Solos when he was learning his craft note for note by ear,astounding!) any way this is really good for all guitar players

great lesson! would you consider teaching some of zal yanovski's playing in the lovin' spoonful e.g. let the boy rock n' roll,day blues,sporting life blues, on the road again,bald headed lena etc the hits i didn't mention because there are millions of videos for those but i think he did riffs and techniques in these songs you don't see lessons of and i think he was doing unique things.

Cool video! At 16:32 the lick can be just as well be interchanged with the tonic and still sound great. In such case it would substitute the I7 with a temporary Imin6 which adds some tension

Thanks! Yes good idea, definitely try some other applications for these licks. Also a lot of the dominant material will work over the related II chord, and the minor licks can be used over the related V chord.

I will usually do that if I'm looking at a specific song or solo. This is more of a talky, analysis kind of lesson though and I wanted to explain what it was about right at the outset.

Who are you to say what’s “always better”? Lots of people will be familiar with Charlie Christian’s music and might be happy to hear what Adrian has to say in his introduction to the lesson before he starts to play. Myself included.

A splendid lesson on a really influential player. And I loved the tone on that jazzbox! I’ve been looking for a semi-hollowbody so I’ll look for one of these as well as an ES-335.

Yes, it works well for jazz. It's not a true semi, but gets close enough to some of those classic jazz tones. At some point I'd love to get an ES 335 or maybe 175 too!

picking direction of lick # 3?

Think I probably sweep the opening triplet with all downstrokes. Then alternate pick the rest. No right or wrong really so experiment and see what works for you. I've read Charlie Christian used mainly downstrokes.

Keith Richards clubbed an unruly fan over the shoulders with his Tele during a gig when the guy jumped on stage and was running toward Mick. He says after he smacked the guy, he strapped the Tele back on, found it was not even out of tune and went on with the show! Believe me, (I own a couple) that thing could care less where it's sitting. There's just nothing that beats a Telecaster. Most perfect guitar ever made!

Folks, if you want to start with jazz guitar I highly recommend doing it in historical order. Don't start this genre by analysing Pat Metheny, go with Charlie Christian first! You won't understand Wes Montgomery or George Benson without Charlie Christian, you won't understand Pat Metheny without Wes Montgomery. And they all go back to Charlie. Charlie Christian ist the best starting point, even when you plan to go more "modern" later.

Adrian, I’ve been watching and learning several of your videos over the last few weeks, everything from Texas blues, chicken’ pickin’, and now a few new jazz licks. Your videos have lifted me out of a ten year rut, and inspired me to expand my playing capacity, and in two weeks I’ve cleaned up my solos immensely, and added tons of flavor to my playing. Hey Adrian, Thanks for featuring Charlie Christian. What a guitar icon! And thanks for continuing to share your knowledge and great playing in these tutorial videos! I love your channel. And, glad to see a little different camera angle in this one for the intro, allowing some light from a window to enter the frame; it allowed me to breathe easier, and stop worrying that you lived in a dark basement with the Phantom character always behind you. ;-) Although always love the red panels and the lights in the background - always cheerful! Thanks again for all your work!

Around 19:00 when you’re talking about mi6 arpeggios, they always sound “diminished” to me because they basically are, just without the b5. The mi3 and b6 are like the 3 and 7 of a diminished chord and that tritone is half of the diminished tension.

Wish I knew theory. I hoped I would pick something up by constantly watching these kinds of videos, but there really is too much and nobody knows where to start. I always get excited to try something until I hear endless theory and know I have to give this up too and do something simple. Why is music just so abstract and not like anything related to real life? Its more like science than art really, I guess that what separates a musical person, I was always awful at math and science... Going on youtube just makes you feel like everyone is better than you in every way.

@@Ayo.Ajisafe Thank you for the kind words, but it turns out my "ear" is even worse. I can't tell chords or what notes are where, but I can recognize movements like slides, things like that. I can play to an extenet but don't know where to go next, I know I don't sound musical. Not to mention I've barly ever seen anyone ever play a guitar, I live in the middle of nowhere and was isoilated most of my life from people. There's no teachers around here, but I dream of a day I can afford to leave this place. I dream of being around groups of musciaians just showing eachother things plainly, with their hands so you plainly see and understand. But a dream it shall remain it seems.

Nicely done. Chollie (in addition to his other manifest virtues) definitely provides great bridge material from natural blues vocab to playing on changes. And it all comes full circle too. Even for hardcore bebop folk, having gained full command of all their book learning (which is awesome, beautiful and totally NOT dry or cold or boring), it (i.e. sounding good) still comes down to landing chord tones on strong beats, and knowing that *chords and scales are really the same thing*.

Nice job Adrian! There really are people out here trying to figure out the magic of MrCC! Even 77 years after his last recording. Thank you for this excellent lesson! BTW, just a month ago I isolated ALL of his recorded solos, and I listen repeatedly on my smartphone (for inspiration). It's a lot more enjoyable when you don't have to listen to Lionel's corny vibes or Benny's dated clarinet.
