Charlie came to Iraq in 05-06. Our FOB had just been mortared, and they told him they were gonna cancel his trip from Baghdad out to us, and he said nope. He came, played about 10-12 songs, talked for a few, and then hopped on a Blackhawk to the next fob. That Old man was an OG!
When this was released, it caused an uproar in radio, because he swore in it. In order to play on air, they made a version calling the devil a "son of a gun". But in live performances Charlie could sing what he wanted. RIP
The radio version said "Son of a gun." They performed this on Saturday Night Love and he actually said Son of a b!tch. They might have been the first time I heard a swear word on TV.
@That Carl Chick No, it was the one where she has her back turned to The Charlie Daniels Band, the music is playing, and she has to say if they're playing live or if it's a recording (Is it live, or is it Memorex?). She says, "Beats me." Then, the Charlie Daniels Band knocks on the window of the recording studio she has her back turned to, she turns around, and they say, "It's Memorex!" The point of the commercial was that the quality of Memorex audio cassette tapes was so good, that even a legend like Ella Fitzgerald couldn't tell if it was a live performance or a recording.
ive watched so many reaction videos to the devil went down to georgia, and as soon as it starts, everyone is gripped by it, it doesnt matter who you are, you have skin in the game and you want johnny to win, its one of the best written songs in history, and id put it up there with any shakespeare, Beethoven, whatever! its a classic!
I love how everyone became so serious and invested in the story that is being told in the song. One of the things I love about older music is the stories that were told in them. ❤ you guys!
Charlie Daniels was not only an exceptional musician and singer, but he was always giving and helping others, especially our wounded warriors, Vets, and sick children. Broke my heart when he passed, but I know that God must have a special place for him in Heaven.
Hell of a song. I grew up around the Charlie Daniel's Band. My mom worked for him here in Tennessee. I use to sit on his lap at Christmas because he played Santa for all of his employees kids. Had a tire swing in front of the log cabin, which was his office. Really good man.
Wow I remember he visited some business in the 80's (I think a car dealership) in Oak Ridge, TN and I got a signed t-shirt from him with my parents. Wish I still had the shirt but again I was in elementary school at the time.
yep, his stories are arguably better than the music itself. Some of my fave stories.. stroker Ace, still in Saigon, legend of wooly swamp, easy rider and his cover of Big Bad John.. the best music is probably south's gonna do it again, drinking my baby goodbye and this one. lots of good music though and a great Mexican style song (which is a cover too) Caballo Diablo
Good video. I'm a 56 year old white man from middle Tennessee. I grew up listening to Charlie Daniels. He was a hero of mine. He came to my home town and did a concert back around 2010. I waited in line and got him to autograph a fiddle for my daughter and a picture for me. It was a highlight of my life to meet and talk to this legend. He did so much for others, including our troops over seas. I'm glad to see you getting a little taste of his music. He was a good man. Thank you for highlighting him. I always enjoy watching you guys. Keep up the good work. If you guys are ever around Winchester, TN, I would love to cook you a good steak dinner.
As someone who has played the fiddle, I can tell you Charlie was one of a kind. He was self taught. You can tell by the way he holds the fiddle. No one would ever teach you hold a fiddle that way....but it didn't hold him back. He's a fantastic fiddle player.
@@andrewlatourette428 if you watch how he holds it, it's under his chin on his chest. He's holding it parallel with his body. Someone teaching you to play fiddle will teach you to rest it on your shoulder perpendicular to your body. He also has a unique grip on the bow. That's a man who taught himself to play. He's also a fantastic guitar player. He's just a great musician. I bet he could play about anything he wanted to play.
I heard of an interview where someone was talking to both Charlie Daniels and a classical violinist. The violinist starts making elitist comments about how fiddlers can't really play the violin or something, and Charlie picks up his fiddle and plays a piece of classical violin music perfectly. Then challenges the violinist to do what he does. I don't know if it's a true story or a tall tale, but I'm inclined to believe it.
@@anitaslack9193,yeah someone commented it came on a TV show,an Charlie picked up the fiddle an started to play,an the violinist got quite or something, it's probably on youtube
I love watching reactions from the younger generation to classic rock. I love seeing how music from 40 plus years ago still has the ability to get under the skin of people who weren't born yet.
Listen, this song, transcends, genres, age groups, skin color, everything this is a song that everybody appreciates and loves. This is a frigging. Awesome song.
The world was truly a better place when Charlie was in it, he passed away in 2020 at age 83. When I was much younger in Wilmington, when Charlie came home to visit, he came into a diner outside of town where I was working. Someone called the owner who quickly came in. Before Charlie left, after quickly meeting each of us wait staff on the floor, he asked to meet all of the cooks and dishwashers behind the scenes. Charlie knew they were the ones who made the world go round. He was a gentle soul, truly dismissive of his fame, one of a kind.
The coolest thing about this performance was that the keyboard player had his arm in a cast. Now that's commitment---playing with a broken arm. This was a hug hit back in the Summer of '79. We lost Charlie a few years ago, but his music lives on. Loved your reactions! Cheering for Johnny to win...that was adorable.
My favorite country song of all time! This song goes so hard. Charlie was spittin' straight BARS!! And the fiddle playing and story telling... lovin' this! R.I.P. Charlie Daniels.
@@shawnj1966 I love Uneasy Rider too. Funny ass story. "Just when I thought I'd get out of there with my skin These five big dudes come stroll'n in With this one ol' drunk chick and some fella with green teeth." The writing was on point!
Btw, his calls for Johnny are actual fiddle licks, "Fire on the Mountain", "Chicken in the Bread Pan." So this song really resonates with those of us who grew up with this kind of music.
@@shelbys6572 Could it be a nod to Marshall Tucker band , like the line in Hotel California about stabbing it "with their steely knives" is a nod to Steely Dan?
I remember when this song came out! You KNOW you're in country music royalty when Charlie Daniel's was playin!! Charlie was patriotic, God fearing man!
I’ve once told friends that this one of the greatest songs to have been recorded in music. It has a hero, a villain: good versus evil. It has movement like an opera with elements of rock country rap and all with real instruments. Great musicianship on top of all that. At the end of the song you can’t help but be happy to know that the boy beat the devil’s arrogant ass. Then to call him a sonofabitch. Lol great reaction guys!!
I had the immense pleasure of seeing CDB live about 10 years ago, and Im so glad I did, cause Charlie passed away in 2020. He's a country music LEGEND!!
Just remember youngster, when he played Country Music crowd considered him non country but a Southern rocker. Just like Elvis and John Denver country claimed him YEARS later. Funny though, listen to this new crap they call "New Country". College boys with fake accents, nasal singing, and redundant rhythms and rap sounds.
So glad you guys loved this song! It was a huge part of my childhood. And the way you guys cheered at the end when Johnny beat the Devil, that's exactly how we reacted back when this song came out! By the way, there were two versions off this song, one with "son of a bitch" and one with "son of a gun". They played the "son of a gun" version on regular radio, and the other version on more alternative stations/live performances only.
I've heard BOTH versions on the radio. Guess they played the unedited version by mistake when I heard it on there. ANYWAY, I've always LOVED this song and will ALWAYS LOVE THE CDB !!! I saw them at the JUNE JAM hosted by the band ALABAMA back in 1986. (Think that's the correct year.) When they started playing "The Devil Went Down To Georgia) I was way back from the stage (outside venue) and I held up the ALABAMA flag. Charlie saw the flag I was holding up and he commented on it ! I forget what he said, but, I could tell he was talking about my flag cause he pointed straight at me and they put a spotlight on me - it was late in the afternoon and getting kinda dark. And, having been an ALABAMA FAN for so long, since ALABAMA started it, I had been wanting to go to the June Jam, but we could never afford it. So, we saved up for it and my Daddy went to that June Jam with me - the one and only JAM I ever went to ! It was a time I'll never forget even though I can't remember all the details. Had a wonderful time for the three days we went to enjoy all the other events going on. 😉
To truly appreciate this song, you need to understand the level of difficulty and skill it requires to play the violin the way Charlie Daniels can. He is truly a gifted musician
I was privileged in college, when he performed in my Kansas hometown, to work as an usher for his concert and hang out a bit with him in the green room. Such a darned nice guy.
I was in High School when this came out. NOBODY had EVER heard anything like it. It became an INSTANT CLASSIC. We knew back then it would live forever. The ultimate battle with the devil. Yes you're right...we knew the devil was God's music director before he was tossed out....which made this EVEN BETTER! Love it! Thank you!!!
@@roseterry2744 well she performed her floor routine at the Olympics in Georgia to the song "the devil went town to Georgia " and the entire arena went nuts. So bad that coaches from other countries complained about unsportsmanlike behavior and wanted her banned for cheating. Look it up...its awesome
Charlie was a multi-instrumentalist. Fiddle, violin, mandolin, guitar and probably some others that I forgot to list. He passed away in 2020 from a stroke. Rest in peace.
Charlie Daniels was a true inspiration, he came to Florida yearly and raised multimillion dollars for a non profit organization called The Angelus where he’d play and strum his fiddle also open to the public and turned over every dime made! The Angelus is homes surrounded in the woods for disabled and handicapped. He’s the reason it still exists today! ❤ Charlie Daniels
The Devil lost his golden fiddle because he accidentally challenged the best that’s ever been. He didn’t realize that he was in the house with the rising Son, otherwise he would’ve ran. He offered it though, like a wolf laying down a bread pan to tempt a chicken. With no hesitation, the chicken fearlessly took the bait in the presence of the wolf, and then walked away completely unharmed. The chicken wasn’t afraid of the wolf. He already knew that dog wouldn’t bite.
This is the heart of what true country is. Bluegrass/country and western/ outlaw country/ whatever you wanna call it. From Johnny cash to George strait, Charlie Daniels to Clint black, and everything in between.. people just making good music and talking real life relatable stories!
Thirty-some years ago I saw this performance live in the front row, only 15 feet away from the man and the band who were playing on a circular rotating stage in a theater that only held maybe 200 people. It was a double billed concert with another Legend, Kenny Rogers. I was close enough to see up under the shadow of Charlie's Stetson to be one of the few people who can say they looked Charlie Daniels in the eye. I blew him a kiss and he winked back.
I saw him live in 2017 and it was a great show. He even played a few electric guitar solos, and I had no clue he also played guitar. His licks on the guitar are very similar to his fiddle playing. RIP Charlie👍🏼
I was a kid when the song came out. It was so popular, it was one of those songs where, for the first few weeks it was out, any time it came on the radio, the whole room (or car) would stop talking and listen to the song. It just naturally commanded our attention.
I was at summer camp when this song was new in 1979 and we reacted just as you said. Even when it wasn't on we were talking about it. I remember one kid said the first thing he is going to do when he comes home from camp was to buy this record.
Charlie Daniels opened up for a lot of the bands. I saw as a teenager. I cannot count how many times I saw him.His shows never got boring. And I always enjoyed seeing him live. What I entertainer! RIP Charlie...."devil's in the house of the rising sun"
I do enjoy instead of just asking the question and moving on still being clueless they will take a second and pull out the phone to get an answer. I mean we have all the answers to the universe in our pocket so use it hah
This is one of the most classic songs that you will ever hear. It never gets old. First time you ever saw anything like rap and country put together. Was fun watching you guys enjoy it
This is Grandma from Texas. So glad you reacted to Charlie Daniels (RIP) you know he became a Christian later and cleaned up his lyrics (no foul language). He was one of the best fiddle players ever. If you look closely on many of his songs he has busted so many of the strings on his bow that he finishes out with one string. Amazing artist. Thank you for this
Remember that commercial where he's in the restaurant with the strolling violinist and he takes the violin, plays the hell out of it so the horsehair is all broken and hanging off the bow, and hands it back to the bewildered musician and says, "That's how you do it, Son," or something close to that?
by today's standads Charlie's lyrics are positively g-rated...... if you havent heard it, you might wanna check out his song "still in saigon".......Im also a Texan(native Dallasite stuck in west Texas)
My mom & dad loved to dance to this song... they tore the floor up. Mom's left leg was stiff because of a crushed kneecap... I loved to watch them dance to this song. Everyone loved to watch them. It really was incredible to see. Love your channel, men. ❤ Charlie Daniels is a national icon.❤🇺🇲❤️
I was lucky enough to see Charlie Daniels a few years back. Before the concert, he had a free meet and greet, where he autographed photos that he had someone passing out.(also free) He spent time talking with everyone and taking pictures. Then he played and sang for 2 hours. He was a few months shy of 80 years old at the time.
Growing up with this on the radio (as a child of the 90's), I got tired of hearing this song... but seeing it played live as an adult, I have a whole new-found appreciation for how absolutely HARD this goes...
Charlie is a born again Christian and loves to talk about Jesus his Lord any time he gets a chance. Also he loves this country and even surprised Pres Trump a couple of times and played for him at some rallies. Thanks for playing that video of C.D.!!!!
I think this is the kind of song that everyone can get down to, whether they predominantly listen to rap, rock, country, heavy metal, classical, blues, etc... The instruments and lyrics really get everyone pumped lmao
I used to love listening to this in the car with my dad on the way to baseball practice back in the day. He recently passed so coming across this brought me good memories. Thank you🙌🏽
My uncles dad was his first bass player when they were young adults for years. Ended up becoming successful in Bakersfield Ca not for music though. He told my dad and uncle he knew him cause they were huge fans and they never believed him so he took them to a concert, no tickets or nothing and walked to the band entry in the back and told the security guard “tell Charlie Ray Is here” and like 2 minutes later he walked out himself and gave him a huge hug and took them all into his green room and hung out. Pretty awesome.
I love you guys and your reactions. You show respect to a man who's genre is before your time. Shout out to you all mad respect from me. You men were raised right.
Charlie Daniels got super famous along with others from the movie UrbanCowboy with John Travolta& DebraWinger which was filled with great music that all became hits. Charlie became a born again Christian & spoke the word & his love for Jesus Christ everywhere he went. He was 80 when he died & I wondered if he got a golden fiddle!
Just ran across this reaction. I really appreciated it. It was sad when Charlie passed, I met him several times. My wife is Charlie's 3rd cousin. Her grandma is Charlie's 1st cousin. We went to the Daniel family reunion every year down in Elizabethtown, NC. Charlie didn't make it there too often, as he was always busy. He loved America and the military, and was a true patriot. Thanks for the flashback, guys!
Love Charlie RIP. He was an awesome talent and even more awesome humbled man. Got pleasure of seeing him about 5-6 years ago at an impromptu mini concert at stone mountain. He guested on another bands remake called Devil Comes Back to Georgia.
I got to see the Charlie Daniels Band perform this live about 15 years ago and they were fantastic. Brought back childhood memories of listening to the song on the radio. As for Roots, back when there were only three networks, they used to have "event television" in the form of mini series, which typically ran each night for a week. Roots was one of the first, and definitely the one that left the biggest lasting impression. I was just 7, but I watched it all. Talk about a powerful history lesson! It was so successful, mini series were produced every year and became huge ratings draws. I guess it was our version of "binge-watcing" back in the day.
Amen❣️ I was in high school and I would come home do my homework. Shower, wash my hair and get in my comfee jammies, and ate a piece of fresh baked raw apple cake, really old recipe, of my Grandma's. Good memories it seems like a whole lifetime ago!!! But I remember my eyes being glued to the TV set, I always wanted them to get away and not get caught, I would get so tense, anxious, and angry all at once. The inhumanity of supposed "human beings"!!! It was a hard movie to watch, but they were overcomers!!!🙏✝️✡️🇺🇲🇮🇱🌍🖤🤎💛🧡🤍💪❤🕊
Terry, Apparently Roots was fictionalized just to attract viewers. I learned this recently while watching these guys watch a Thomas Sowell video. You might want to check it out. Sowell is such a great historian and teacher.
One of the classic songs of all time. I defy anyone not to enjoy it even if your not into country. First time I’ve seen it live… awesome. Woooo go Johnny
I love your videos. I have three grown kids and they love all different kinds of music. To many young people never expose themselves to music of the past. You guys go across all genres and it is so much fun to see your enjoyment !
Charlie Daniels was considered in the genre called Outlaw Country. Some othwr greats in this genre were Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Jr. All amazing artists. I grew up with all theirmusic because my dad is a musician and he and his friends would get together once a month or so and play their music. This song came out in 1979 and was an instant classic. He wrote this song to shut upclassical players who said he couldn't play "real violin" music. He showed them all because Johnny's solo is so technically difficult there are still only a few musicians in the world who can nail it.
I don't remember where I saw him perform this song (it might have been on an awards show) but as he was getting to the end of the song fire erupts from his bow. It was so cool.
A good song is a good song. I love watching people discover new things. I love that by the end of the song they were all bobbing their heads and rooting for Johnny!
This song is legendary, and Charlie D was one of the greatest ever to do this! (RIP). Another great song with a great message is "This World Needs a Few More Rednecks". Great stuff, fellas. Loved how excited you got at the climax of the story in this song. This one is a crowd pleaser!
