The RYA shore based courses concentrate on the traditional navigational skills, obviously. But there is also a need to show students what's out there on the electronic front, what the programmes and apps a telling you and just how much you can rely on the equipment. Of course we always back everything up with a paper plot and treat with caution what the electronics tell us but it would be unrealistic to imagine that we don't rely on them quite heavily, because we do. So we had better understand what they can do and their limitations and that is what this video is aimed to do. It is part of our distance learning courses along with Electronic Aids to Navigation videos and simulator videos for MARPA and RADAR from Martin Quaintance of Nautical Software.com and this video is also in our Westview Tutorial video vault for those who subscribe

Expedition Uk or Adrena France as far as I am aware. Maybe others, too.

I preferred paper, or always thought I did until I downloaded navionics last month to have a play around. one thing that I found that did shock me though was that as you play with the tidal curve the depth numbers change on the chart, so they don't appear to be CD but actuals. I think if that is the case it should be very clearly spelled out on the app chart itself. maybe it is and I have just missed it. in coastal work you could easily reference that chart at a high tide and find by the time you are getting to where you were looking it was low and no longer enough water. I prefer CD. maybe there is a setting somewhere but I haven't found it. course to steer is a big thing missing as well.

I smile at your obvious bias. I don't necessarily agree with it though.
