Azula chose Iroh because he was distracted when he noticed Toph was Aang’s earthbending companion, meaning the avatar was learning another element and getting closer to challenging his brother the Fire Lord. And also, Iroh was the only one present who would unquestionably beat her and she knows this

azula went for iroh bc he was momentarily distracted when he recognized toph and realized she was part of the avatar gang. and the camera panning down to her feet was to show that she recognized iroh in that moment, cuz her feet are her "eyes"

Azula didn't even faltered after getting surrounded by her enemies. She even calmly waited for the right moment to strike in order to escape, she is truly a force to recon with.

This ep really showed how much Zuko cared about Iroh. He may usually have a temper/ slightly annoyed with him, but he is one og the most important people in his life.

Azula: "A princess surrenders with honor." **Immediately does an incredibly dishonorable thing and tries to kill her own (and only non-villainous) family member.** Yeah, that's her alright. "Azula always lies" is a thing for a *_reason._*

Azula was big brain in that final scene. She noticed iroh was distracted: he noticed that the stranger he had tea with was friends with the avatar. Azula quickly exploited this and made her escape.

Katara: "When we set up camp, we help each other out". Toph: "THAT SOUNDS LIKE COMMUNISM TO ME"!

Toph: 3 on 3 + Sokka. Me: Mai and Ty Lee aren't Benders, either, though.

A reactor that got the whole Toph feeling him with her feet thing when Iroh got hit is so cool! It's lost on most people. Also, FIREBENDING BELLY BUMP!!! Iroh was really a true master of all bending forms....

I love the scene where Azula’s group is steamrolling along the field and Zuko is following behind at a fraction of the pace. It’s a perfect metaphor for how much further ahead Azula is but Zuko keeps pushing on, no matter how fast he’s going he just keeps moving.

"Both?! I'M COMPLETELY CALM!!" Oh Katara xD Aang coming to Appa's defense really warmed my heart even though it was sort of bad he was yelling at Toph like that. Shows how much Appa means to him that he'd insert himself into the argument even though he's been trying to stay out of it for the most part. The Toph/Iroh scene was also fantastic! More Iroh wisdom and it showed that two people on opposing sides can be friends. Gotta hand it to Azula though for taking advantage of Iroh when he let his guard down. I'm sure normally that would never happen on Iroh's end, but I suppose it just goes to show how Azula was really paying attention to every little thing despite being cornered. Again, such a fantastic villain! Appa is the MVP!

Azula saw an opening when Iroh looked over to toph. That's why she shot a flame at him.Then created a flame shield to block all the attacks which made cover for her to escape.

Lol when Katara was teasing Toph about the stars, I've always wondered why Toph was so mad. Katara meant she couldn't see the stars cuz of the tent, but she forgot that Toph is blind. Toph thought she was making a blind joke!!! lol

Notice how Iroh holds the teacup out for Toph to grab it, it's because he's testing Toph and seeing if she can really see without her eyes and testing her to see if she's a threat. Iroh is so smart and wise that he's always analyzing people.

Azula aimed for Iroh because he was distracted and basically her biggest threat at the moment. He noticed Toph together with the others (and I think he was shocked about that). That’s when he didn’t look and Azula took her chance.

Azula attacked iroh because he was distracted for a second when he saw Toph was with the Avatar. Azula is an opportunist and does not care about her own uncle. Also... about Toph and the foot zoom, she is surprised as she recognized him as the stranger she met in the woods. she was worried about her new friend being hurt.

They showed tophs foot because that was the moment she recognized him. Just because she cant see doesnt mean she cant recognize people. She personalizes people based on the way they walk, not their face. She cant see their face. 🤣

This is the second time Appa uses his tail to blow Mai and Ty Lee away from Sokka and Katara. The first was in "Return to Omashu". This is the second time Aang makes himself a mustache out of Appa's fur. The first was in "The King of Omashu". Azula's escape in a swirl of flames is similar to how Jeong Jeong escaped in "The Deserter". This is the first episode that features all six prominent characters. Zuko arrives on the ostrich horse he stole from Song and her family in The Cave of Two Lovers.

The focus with toph at the end is because she recognized it was the man that she was just talking with (Iroh). She was able to distinguish it was him (given that she sees with her feet), hence, her reaction.

Avatar Extras states that the fight sequence between Aang, Zuko, and Azula, was meant to resemble a "Mexican Standoff", more commonly used to refer to a three way duel, and was modeled after multiple Westerns. It was also noted that the battle was challenging for the shows creators, due to the fact that they had to coordinate each of their movements, and show all three of them fighting each other at the same time.

I think Azula took out Iroh because he was one of the most strongest fire benders in the world at the time. She also probably knew that would be a distraction for Zuko and would give her a better chance to escape.

Just because she’s blind doesn’t mean she’s completely helpless or useless, obviously she clearly isn’t. She didn’t think of them as a team at the time. She has friends now, if she wants support and love and freedom she needs to give it back

Toph and iroh are so great. Toph might be stubborn and sarcastic ,just like iroh is very nice and funny but both are very wise and openminded. Iroh is very spiritual and toph is very much a realist. She is blunt but she is also nice and understanding. I cant wait for u to see more of her and the others. Toph is loved alot cuz of how badass and how unique and blunt she is but ppl tend to picture her as rowdy, and impulsive with an attitude. When really u can see she is very down to earth(😉), easy going, blunt ,wise, stubborn but openminded and a realist. I appreciate her soft moments as much as her badass moments. Cant wait for yall to see more of what I mean. I love how yall appreciate uncle iroh and them all. Sis really is quick in catching things and I love that

When Katara first talks to Toph about helping out, Toph is chewing on a piece of wheat, a well known component of Jet's character. Additionally, Toph and Jet both possess rebellious natures.

I know I'm late but the show never talks about it or show it but after his son died and his brother stole the throne Iroh went on a journey to the spirit world to basically join his son but found enlightenment due to events on the way there and in there. Then he came back chill but his brother still being a hater

It actually really impresses me how Azula was able to see her opportunity to strike Iroh. She saw that Iroh's eyes were directed towards Toph and her group (since Iroh didn't know Toph was part of Team Avatar at the time) so she took that split second reaction to hit him a fatal blow and cause a distraction. Such a clever and cunning villain.

According to Avatar Extras, the name of the abandoned town was Tu Zin. It was also stated that it was a mining town and after all the minerals were gone, the people literally left overnight. When Sokka makes a wig out of Appa's shed fur, the wig resembles Marge's hairdo from The Simpsons. Azula's smile when she finds Aang at the abandoned village mirrors Ozai's smile in "Zuko Alone", when he is watching Azula firebending. A lot of scenes during the chase closely resemble the chase in the 1969 western film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. An example being: after robbing a train, another train pulls up from behind with only one boxcar and it opens up with the cavalry chasing after them like Azula's tank train in this episode.
