For Doctor Who's third round with the Daleks, it goes super silly. Intentionally so, but does that actually mean it works? Also bidding farewell to the last of the original companions Ian and Barbara, does this story have too many plates spinning to be a success?

I love this story! Partly because it feels like a fun road trip with the one of my favourite Tardis Teams. But I get why it’s not everyone’s jam.

You poor soul. This story is a campy romp. The actors are clearly loving every minute of it. Not every story has to be high drama and steeped in pathos. This is the first time we see comedy Dalek action and the music highlights it perfectly. 10 out 5 stars from me

I don't need every story to be high drama, did you see my review of The Romans? 😂 But while I don't need every story to be high drama, I need a bit more care put it into it when it is isn't that I think is put into The Chase. I'm glad you like it though, I just wish I did as well.

Wow...I don't think I've ever seen a review that scathing for The Chase but you do make some really good points which I had not thought about before. I watched it not that long ago for my marathon and did enjoy the ride though I agree that the Mechanus stuff is definitely the strongest part of the story.

Really enjoyed your review - I definitely think the direction here is a case of 'dialling it in' plus I think the robot Doctor situation is like it is because the viewers at the time had no means of seeing it again - so it's a case of 'getting away with it'. I do feel that the Empire State episode and the Haunted House sections drag the story right down - so it's surprising there are also some highs in the story too. For me, I'd rate it above the Web Planet for watchability..... just !

I have to say I am in total agreement with everything you’ve said so far on each of these Marathon videos! Glad to see someone championing the 1st Doctor and Barbara! Barbara’s character development was so brilliantly constructed up until her very disappointing departure. Looking forward to the Time Meddler!

The doubling in this story is so poor, and then you hit Enemy of the World and they did it perfectly. Like it would not have been that hard to just actually use Hartnell in the scenes where it is just the robot. I'd love to see the other double doctor story found one day (mostly because the Massacre is just really good)

I am in complete agreement on this story. I find it a trying watch and the “comedy” doesn’t come anywhere close to Denis Spooner comedy. It’s not Terry Nation’s strength. Indeed, for his ability to deliver occasional brilliance (like Genesis of the Daleks), Nation often delivers mediocrity just as often. And Richard Martin is once again stretched beyond his directing abilities. For such a complicated story, he makes really amateurish mistakes… gaps in the scenery that show production crew, a Dalek in the haunted house before they even arrived, visible camera shadows, the robot Doctor switch up, etc. Surprisingly the thing he does best is the battle between the Daleks and Mechanoids… despite the animated explosions. It’s telling that this was his last story as director. The best thing about this story is that it leads into The Time Meddler, my favorite Hartnell story of all time.

Seems we're definitely on the same page regarding The Chase! (And Nation and Martin it seems...) With The Time Meddler following it directly, that comparison between Nation and Spooner's ideas and use of humour in Doctor Who is hard to ignore!

I was very confused when you talked about the Beatles refrence, because i did not remember seeing it. And then i found out that it has been taken out of the newest blu-ray release, and my first time expercing this story was through the blu-ray release

I occasionally stick the DVD on, watch 20 minutes, remember how utterly crap it is and skip to the last episode. Ian and Babs-favourite companions forever. Another great vid 😁

I think what people forget about the daleks at this time was that they were a huge pop culture icon. There were songs, comics and all sorts. The leaning into comedy was a natural evolution of that I'm not saying it makes them any better in this story, nor this story any better. However, I do think it's somewhat acceptable given that it balances out the departure of the real og companions
@chris_stokes
@chris_stokes Год назад
I mean, I don't forget that but it is important context you're right. And a comic story with Daleks could work perfectly fine. The Daleks actually get some great jokes throughout the show. It's just a shame that none of them are in The Chase!

@chris_stokes you're not wrong, the best dalek moments in this story aren't from the dialogue

@@chris_stokes The Daleks Invasion of Earth is my 5/5 this season. I do have a serious soft spot for the historicals of this era, however I seem to judge them harsher by quite a bit. Romans and the Crusade are both 4/5, and they both have fatal flaws that prevents a perfect score for me. Romans it is the Doctor and Vicki witnessing the fire going on in Rome and are almost joyful about it. In the Crusade, it's Saladin.

Massive spoilers below for the tv show Toni "Doctor (who)" Tyler. Beware; Insanity may ensue. Enter at your own risk. You have been warned. Series 1 & 2 of new Who was made as both an end and beginning of classic era Doctor Who. Setting up the birth of our Doctor inside the previous whoniverse on the Earth that would become Mondas. Our Doctor is a hybridchild because his parents came from 2 different whoniversis. Jackie Tyler ended up inside the previous whoniverse giving birth to our Doctor, (this had been foreshadowed already back in 1973 the Three Doctors) As Doctor Tyler in that episode special was the 0th riginal version of our Doctor. (We had this being confirmed during the series 7B episode Rings of Akhaten) (When the call with Rose got cut of in Doomsday; the classic Whoniverse seized to exist; Its litteral Doomsday (also known as June 23rd 2010) and the new Whoniverse replaced the classic whoniverse outside the TARDIS. (10ths words to Rose actully hides the big bang in plain sight "ears" if one listens careful enough) "The last gap in the whoniverse is about to close" = the Big Bang seen expanding out from a point in the future = percived in normal time it would be seen as shrinking before it took place... Series 3 & 4 set up the birth of the Master with the Metacrysis ending up with Rose (Romanalunda) Tyler (again parents with DNA from more then 1 whoniverse; in this case 3 (The child of the Bad wolf girl and the man born out of war and chaos) series 5-7A (River Song arc) set up how the first TARDIS came to be. series 7B-9 told us how our Doctor became the Doctor told thru Clara. Series 7B-10 (+ end of time) told us how the Master ascended and became the new whoniverse Black Guardian over time; same with how Rose/Romana became the new White guardian (Rassilon the new Celestial Toymaker; (Rose/badwolf girl/mother to the Master/Romana/White Guardian is also Santa (in the new WHoniverse) Series 11-onging is telling us how our Doctor once was the stepfather to a certain boy born in about 4BCE in Judea. Series 11-onging is telling us how our Doctor will become the virgin mother to a girl born in around 4BCE in Southern England; how our Doctor will become the greatest emperor in 97AD; Merlin in around 400AD; Ashildurs grandfather in around 750ADish; The Eternal president of our mankind in 1948 New York, how the new unfinished timemachine was begun to be built in the same year. and lastly how our Earth will become New Skaro and how our mankind (from the classic WHoniverse; now inside the new Whoniverse since episode Journeys End) will all die in both 202X and 5145AD ish at the same time and we are all saved twice over to the new completed timemachine River Songs mind completed that saves us all to its harddrive and then takes us to former burnt/terraformed formed Gallifrey where we become the new whoniverse rulers over time...after a long timewar against the former rulers over time that didnt fully ascend at the end of the Timelord-Ragnarookian (read puppet Dalek) timewar (those that fully ascended became the new Guardians over time) and the ascention "device" became the key to time for the new WHoniverse... Yes all this above is in the show if one knows what to look for,,, and how it all really "works"...

Babs and Ian out, in enters Steven 👍. I have mixed feelings about The Chase. It has some good parts and some pointless parts like the haunted house and the boat at sea/Empire State Building. A nice tidy 4 parter would of worked better. The Daleks are not just right? The stuttering umming and Urrring Dalek? Whats going on there? Also the Daleks seem more stupid in this story compared to previous stories and the Epic in Season 3.
