Quite the bizarre show we have here. This obscure gem ran for a year in syndication, and was hosted by Dick Martin. It's a parody that is so devoted to itself I'm still not entirely convinced this isn't a really long SNL sketch. Watch and see what it's all about.
This episode stars Rita Moreno, David Doyle, and an empty seat intended for Henry Ford.

You're not! This came on weekly in my local market (WKBW Channel 7 in Buffalo) at 7:30 pm on (I think) Tuesday. I was only four years old, but I definitely remember Oscar the Mouse and The Cheap Show logo plastered all over the place.

I read somewhere that a writer for a now-defunct paper in Philadelphia thought this show was so bad, they had a viewer of the show review it for them. It's not that bad.

I heard about this. The theme/Music package is groovy. However everybody was in on the joke and that's what made it.

Most of all, I remember "It's Wanda, Dick!". I used to watch this and admire the comic genius that was Janelle Price as Wanda. She was amazing then and still made me laugh when I watched this. I couldn't find anything else that she did after this show. Does anyone know?

I wondered the same thing so I did some digging just now. Janelle made her mark as a singer and stage performer. This may be the only TV she did. It kind of surprises me to know that because I thought she was brilliant here. Sadly, Janelle passed away in 2010, I believe due to cancer.

I remember seeing the green slime gag on this show as a 4 year old, and when our household began subscribing to cable around 1984 I remember thinking the green slime gag on Nickelodeon's "You Can't Do That on Television" was somehow connected to this show. Obviously it wasn't, but I wonder if the creators of "You Can't Do That on Television" stole the idea from this show?

And if that was the case... then basically the whole iconic green sliming thing that Nick has used for years could've come from this? Who knows, would love to know how the Nick slime started!

Hardly anyone remembers "The Cheap Show" (not even my sister, who I remember watching the show with), let alone that the green slime gag might have been invented here. Even "You Can't Do That On Television" has been off air for so long, most people probably don't even realize the origins of Nickelodeon's ubiquitous branding anymore.

My family took the ferry to Balboa Island when I was a kid and there was absolutely no reason to go there. I think now (maybe bacjk the, too?) there is a bridge and the "downtown" might be a destination, but nothing special imo.

the writer on this show told a great story about Truman Capote appearing on the show. He passed out about 10 minutes into the show after taking pills, drinking vodka and having rambunctious sex with a young man in his dressing room prior to filming.

It's meant to be a parody -- and by Chris Bearde of _The Gong Show_ fame, too. CBS O&Os including WCBS-TV 2 showed this wonderful send-up to viewers of the era.
