Tip for you on the sinker. Tie a loop knot on the bottom without the sinker attached then run the loop through and around the sinker like you do the hooks. This will allow you to change the sinker weight without tying a new knot.
Dude, I love your laid back no frills attitude. It's so easy to get caught up in all the new gizmos and marketing hype, not to mention all the shiney new stuff on the tackle store shelves. As someone just getting into salt water, I appreciate that you show the tricks to get around spending all that $$$, keep it about the fishing and not all the crap one can accumulate.
We use this double drop rig on the central Oregon coast. It's an outstanding rig for surf perch. When I fished the Chesapeake Bay, i used a different rig. I use the Uni knot for all my rigging and have never lost a catch. I even ate a tasty shark once using this rig, when I was fishing for croaker back east.
I have been using a "stinger hook" below my sinker for years on my bottom rigs when fishing for flounder. It works! When the water is real sandy, I will add a small red inline float above the bottom hook to increase visibility. Great channel!
Thanx for making fishing practical . I just got back from my second trip to the gulf coast . Did much better this time skunked the first time I was down there . Met a local guy who showed me the ropes and really made it much easier for me. I would really like it if you did a video on saltwater reels versus freshwater and how to take care of them . Every time I go surf fishing I lose a reel after vacation. Also rod and reel selection . I found out that you can enjoy a lot of good fishing without a ginormous rod and reel .
We're taking our pop-up camper to Port Aransas for the next 2 weeks. This rig will definitely be in the water, slaying the big ones...or maybe the small ones...either way this rig will be used a lot and good will be had. Thanks again for yet another excellent video.
Great video! I've bought too many wire bottom rigs in my life time. I'll have to try one of these down in the OBX this week especially with the kicker. 100% agree with you about the knots too.... clinch and loop - I've been good my whole life.
I make the same rig, (Chicken Rig) but I put a loop at the bottom and attach the weight the same way as the hooks. Makes it easier to change the weight as needed. Great videos! Love ur channel. Thx Jim
The fishing world has gotten out of hand. I showed up with a HUK shirt and shoes, Magellan shorts, Costa sunglasses, Hoorag gar, using 30 pound braid with 20 lb flourocarbon on a castaway rod. First thing my buddies said was " wow..... FISHING FASHION". took me back to my humble fishing ways.
Just a suggestion on an even easier rig that we use. Take a few feet of line, tie a hook to each end, make two triple surgeon loops in the middle where your droppers normally are, put the weight on one of the loops. Tie a triple surgeons loop on the end of the main line. Connect the rig to the main line with the other loop on the rig with a loop to loop connection. This gives you a two hook rig with one being a "kicker" hook, allows you to change/add weights if necessary, & it's way easier to put the hooks on because your only putting one piece of line through the eyes.
thanks For the Tip my Family and I moved the area about a year ago an with only a few nice catches we took these rigs out last night and started catching left and right at ft Pickens more than ever and instead of needlefish we started catching blue runner and two really nice red Fish! thanks for the tip!
I put a clip swivel on the end so I can change the pyramid weight in different wave conditions. Also that last extra line at the end you tied on the sinker seems like it would hook on the first one you tied above the sinker.
Nice! Gonna give this a shot tomorrow. I have only gone surf fishing a handful of times and use those cheapo Wal-Mart leaders. Don't catch anything but catfish. This doesn't look gawdy and flashy with 10 swivels and snaps.
Im with ya man, I have been using mono for all my rigs for 35 yrs , never any problems , I use wire or cable for toothy critters like macks, wahoo and sharks
I like to add a snap swivel at the sinker end. Helps to keep the line from twisting. Plus allows me to take the sinker on and off without re-tying. +1 on the knots! Whatever works for you!
JUST RECEIVED A 50 PAC 6/0 HOOKS( SAME HOOK AS YOURS DIFF SIZE) FROM ALI EXPRESS FOR $2.69 DELIVERED THEY RUN 2/0-8/0 ABOUT 6 WEEK DELIVERY TIME BUT AWESOME DEAL AT ABOUT A NICKLE FOR A VERY GOOD QUALITY HOOK.
Berkley big game is worth every scent. Compared to other brands it's by far the best I've ever used. I've tried seagar before and not worth what they're charging for it.
yes a knot is a knot but some knots are better in certain situations. Like if you put a loop knot at the end of your leader so you can simply add and take away if need be without having to tie and retie your weights.
You’re awesome you’re actually the first RU-vider to write me back I bet the backyard will look great when y’all get done I was thinking about coming down to Pensacola do you do any trips with the kayak
try uk fishing! the tides are rapid! 8 oz grip lead! and the shock leader is minimum 50 pound! stream line rigs and max casting distance > so funny how much different angling be !
Man I couldn't agree more..... Keep things cheap and easy. Chances are your gonna lose it anyway and I know I don't have money to leave on the bottom of the ocean. Lol. Thanks for sharing sir.
Make a loop on the bottom instead of tying the weight on with the knot of your choice. Then you can move the hooks and weight around to where you want them on the leader. This negates the need for the second piece of line tied to the weight at the bottom of the rig.
I like they you tell people not waste money on expensive gear...you give them choices..i use piano strings..to make my own leaders..4 dollars and i can make atleast 4
Another winning video. I sure wish I had seen a video with this content back when I started surf and jetty fishing many moons ago. Being unfamiliar as I was with knot tying, I would buy a package of, IIRC, 10 pre made leaders. I soon found out that it wasn't much fun untangling the humungous birds nest that developed while trying to get one leader out of the mess. I enjoy each of your videos, excellent content and humorous wit. Keep them coming. Stan
I fished commercial for years , tied braid straight to the hooks . Averaged 18 tons a year , on hook and line tackle . If they want to bite they bite ! Do fish know the difference between braided line and a thin piece of grass ?
Great info Man. I do the say, mono, weights, hooks and tie my own. I get to place where I want, no beads. Then you see these Walmart leaders that I end up pulling out of the water with all this junk on it.
What’s wrong with a loop knot for a sinker ? Why use a clinch not. It’s much easier to change different weights if needed. And use a dropper loop for your hooks. You need to know how to tie.
Love the vids man. When are you going to do another kayak safety video? I like hearing first hand what to do when shtf from someone whos actually done it. I've been kayaking for awhile now but just starting to get into kayak fishing freshwater and on the ocean here in California. And happy Fourth of July!
LESS LOOPS THE BETTER MORE PLACES FOR SEA WEED AND SLIP GUT TO ATTACH TO AND RUIN YOUR PRESENTATION TIE DIRECT TO SINKER USE A SIMPLE DOUBLE DAVY TAKES 2 INCH OF LINE TO CHANGE THE SINKER NIP IT OFF AND RE-TIE 15 SECONDS TOTAL, EVERY STRENGTH TEST THAT TEST KNOTS THEY ALWAYS BREAK AT THE LOOP NOT THE KNOT LOOPS BAD DIRECT TIE GOOD UNLESS TO LURES AND NEED THE SWIVEL ACTION ....JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION
i dont pay 4 riggs ,when i run short i run my trawler down the beach in front of the surf fishers i get plenty of riggs and i get told im number 1 from the beach combers, that is what that finger means aint it ,ur number 1 ,ur number 1
great vid jack, I was on vacation 6/17-24 south of you and had no luck off the beach but killed the grey snapper on the party boat, unable to fit my blow up kayak in my kids car for the journey down but already making plans for next year, any recipes for the snapper?
Can you still catch whiting and pompano down there just on sand fleas? We used to go over to Navarre with nothing but a rod and bucket in the truck and pick up fleas and slay the whiting and pomps. They won't eat sand fleas for me like that up here in NC, just fresh shrimp. And the odd BeetleSpin on a Thursday.
I think i got it, i will use a-snap connect to make it easy to change the weight, thanks always for continue great videos, and when u going to make that women an honest lady 😂 its really cool 😎 thats she likes to fish with u
