The average income in the State of Alaska is $71,000/yr. The average income of someone living in Anchorage is $81,000/yr. It is very expensive to live in Alaska so please don't even think about moving up unless you have a job waiting for you or A LOT of money in your bank account. The winters are long and it's not so much the cold that will bother you, it's the few daylight hours in the winter. Seasonal Affective Disorder caused by the lack of daylight can cause you to be very depressed. It is also not a great place for retirement unless you are a snowbird. If you are retired, one important consideration is that there are very few doctors who take Medicare in Alaska so you will need a very good supplemental insurance policy if you are retired. I lived in Alaska my entire life and I left when I wanted to retire. I would love to move back but the high cost of living only allows me summer visits now. Rent a place for a year before you decide to move permanently because it is expensive to leave once you are in Alaska. There is an old saying that the definition of an Alaskan Sourdough is "Sour on Alaska, and not enough dough to leave."

literally moving from pa to alaska, been to alaska many times and the people who say alaska is expensive haven’t traveled to the east coast. when your property taxes are 8k a year in pa versus 3k a year in alaska for the same size home/lot, i dontncare if milk is more expensive it’s a net positive unless you drink a lot of milk.

I'm doing my research to move to Alaska from Maine. Would you be able to give me an idea as to the affordability of moving to Alaska and if it would be better to move to areas like Homer Alaska or move further inland. I've been looking at moving to Wasilla, Palmer, Delta Junction, Eagle River and Fairbanks area. I'm hoping to get a job with AlaskaDOT when I get up there. Unfortunately they don't have job guarantees and can't hire anybody who is not already an Alaska resident.

There's really nothing for affordable living in Alaska, and tight competition for jobs. I just got super lucky having the right relatives up here to get my job and move up, but even than, I have to keep a tight budget. I'm just a single guy so I couldn't imagine providing for a family with the cost of living up here.

I have lived in Wasilla, AK, for 5 yrs. There is no cheap place in Alaska to live. And it's getting more expensive each day. If you do your research, you'll find Alaska is not the place to retire.

Check the local police department crime reports, There is lots of crime and drugs there
