For today's video, I set myself the task of finding the very cheapest synthesizer I could on eBay and playing a song on it. This is what I found!
The keyboard is a Yamaha PSS-20, manufactured in 1989. It's a toy keyboard with a very primitive synthesis chip - monophonic, with 8 melody sounds and 8 rhythm sounds.
I demo the features of the keyboard and play the Welsh folk song "Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn" (Watching the White Wheat).

I got one of these when I was in third grade! Mine is white instead of black. I still have it and even modified it to have a toggle switch that switches between the speaker and a 1/4 output jack. I used to beat the "game" by vigorously scrubbing the white keys up and down.

So if I want that thin crappy vintage drum machine. I can buy this or spend 2500.00 on a wooden box that sounds like this🧐

Never even heard of this - but what a beautiful device.

Thank you for this video! I have the white version and I love the way it sounds even if i never found a real musical use for it. The drums are also interesting, in that lowering the volume introduces a sort of interesting bit crusher effect.

I always find "bad" keyboards really fun to play with. Glad you liked the video!

This is a fun video! Reminds me of the vl-tone for sure, but with less options

Great video!! Particularly the rhythm options are exactly what I've been looking for, how easily can the audio output be installed?

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! The modification is pretty simple - I just put the jack across the speaker, with a small capacitor in series on the positive side for protection. The top panel probably isn't the most aesthetically pleasing place to put it, but as all the electronic parts connect to that panel, it's easier than having wires connecting the top and bottom together. Actually, if you're in the UK, I'm thinking of selling this one - send me an email if you're interested and we can agree a price :)

The piece is a traditional folk song from Wales - loads of people have done their version of it. I'd be interested to hear KK Slider's version if you have a link please!
