Thanks for the great information. After the winter, I was reported to the Ministry of Agriculture in Turkey for adding bleach to the sugar syrup I made to feed my bees. People thought I was doing an unhealthy job, even though I hadn't put the honey box in the hives yet. If I hadn't proved that it doesn't mix with honey, it would prevent me from doing beekeeping, maybe they would have culled my bees. Unfortunately, most of the beekeepers in my country could not understand the purpose of this process and reacted harshly by being prejudiced. Luckily, Bob had answered my questions about this before and saved me from worrying. Thank you again for being such a humble person.

I have seen the movie Kovan and beekeepers in Turkey are depicted as very conservative. Glad to hear you did not get slammed by the authorities.
Год назад
@@joakimsaxin6135 thank you. They did not impose any penalties as bleach was allowed to clean the hives, equipment and was not in the nectar period. There are five honeybee subspecies and their ecotypes in Turkey, but they cannot be protected. Foreign bees entering the country illegally provide extreme hybridity. There are new breeding projects, but they are progressing very slowly and beekeepers bring smuggled queens from abroad. The situation is a little complicated. Thanks again.

@ That is interesting. In Scandinavia we have one native subspecie. The first of all to be named in Latin, thus called Apis Mellifera Mellifera. We have to breed them on islands to not cross with English, Italian and Slovenian.
Год назад
@@joakimsaxin6135 We are very lucky in this regard. A.M. Anatolia (central and western), A.M. Caucasus, A.M. Meda, A.M. We have Syrian bees. These bees did not breed based on yield. Many beekeepers work by bringing productive bee breeds from abroad. In recent years, studies on our bee races have started, maybe in the future we will do crossbreeding as you said. I have an artificial insemination device where I can keep my fertile Carniolan bees.

Hey Bob. I used to use the 5lb honey jars, but I use a 1/2 gallon, WIDE mouth canning jar now, and just set it over the hole much like you do with the pails. It has worked fine for me for years and is much cheaper than the 5lb honey jars.. I also bought plastic lids to replace the metal ring/lid. Metal lids rust and become very difficult to get on/off after a while.

When we have a warmer winter during December here in Northwest Minnesota I have to check my bees for food the start of January. By the end of December the bees have already been two and half to three months in cluster here. It is not unusual to have a solid 6 months of non flying bees here some years and then go straight into the spring rains off and on for at least a month or two. Most of Canada has a much milder winter climate than what I get here.

@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 26 дней назад
I think bucket feeders are generally better for the bees and are better for stimulation, comb building and brood production because the feed can be monitored out instead of dumping in fast. Division board feeders are better for gaining weight fast and ease of use.

In my 7th year now....When it comes to feeding/stimulating 5 frame nucs with new grafted/mated queens just starting to preform and be evaluated, how many holes (1/16th in. holes) do you guys punch in your 70mm lids? I just don't have enough experience at knowing flow rates and consumption rates to have a good feel for distribution to the bees yet. BTW...I would love to hear you talk about that subject, flow rates/consumption rates, for the various feeding applications unless you have already and I just haven't seen that talk yet I am feeding thin - 1:1.25ish sucrose. Hey Bob, chlorine is a strong oxidant with 0 nutritional value like a mineral would. I suspect that they are attracted to chlorinated water for the same reason we are ( or should be), harmful bacteria are killed. A fun experiment for a high school science project would be to compare uptake of chlorinated pond water to unchlorinated.

@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 2 года назад
I know several large beekeepers that do it and I have done it a bit myself. My take is that depending on how it's done it can be hard on the bees. I prefer having more control on how much each colony gets and how fast they get it. That having been said, I recognize that at times it's the most efficient way to go.
@robotron7
@robotron7 Год назад
Bob, do you ever add salt along with bleach to the water? Also, I tend to feed a lot fast, so don't have a good rule of thumb on this. With steady slow feeding, how many days in 70F weather would be reasonable to keep feed in the jar without risking syrup going bad; a week, 2 weeks? Last question, is 1.25W/ 1S risky in the early spring feeding due to lack of moisture evaporation in 45-55F weather?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 Год назад
I I have not added salt before so I couldn't say for sure but a little could be OK because bees are attracted to salt water pools. Whether or not syrup would stay good for two weeks at 70° would depend on the lows at night. if it dips down into the 40s or low 50s I think it would be fine. Our high temperatures are currently 45 to 55°f and we are feeding 1 to 1 with no observable issues. I would be hesitant to go thinner.

Thanks for another great video. Could you sometime make one discussing the proper use of queen excluders? That is, the proper time to put them on and how to get bees to fill supers above them. I also have trouble getting them to draw comb above them or even getting the bees to work supers. I have heard that putting drawn comb above excluders works but if you don't have much drawn comb supers then what do you do? I've even gone so far as to build up the hive with so many bees and brood that the bees were hanging outside only to have them swarmed instead of going through the excluders to work the empty supers above. If there is a trick what is it.
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 2 года назад
There are times on singles that I leave the excluder off until the bees are established in the next box. Yes, you may have to deal with a little brood when doing this. Also, I rarely put an excluder over a double deep and yes, you may have to deal with a little brood when doing this.

Teeky Tip: You could also add a top Super Box (Wall only) and add a Sugar Block or Dumped Sugar into it. Bees will use any minor amount of condensation thru winter, to convert that Sugar into their own kind of digested Syrup. Cold doesn't kill Hives, BUT to much internal moist does ! Maybe add some additional Insulation above that Sugar, under that Roof. See the principle of Quilt Boxes in Warre Hives.... I have my Bees in Langstroth Hives, here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and use lots of Sheep's Wool for Insulation.... lots of it here, it's free in the countryside. Just have to pick it off Thorn Bushes, or Fence Posts. 😏 My best Hive is a Jumbo Deep Horizontal Hive with x24 Frames. Its has x5 Inches of Wool in the Walls and Under the Sloping Roof. An Ex Log Box, with a local Swarm. Native Bees are the best for our Winters. 👍

Will putting the buckets on top of the hive in dearth, cause robbing if you don't put it on all your colonies?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 2 года назад
It shouldn't cause robbing unless there is seepage around the bucket. Some people like to put an empty box over their buckets to make sure there is zero robbing.

If you use the ML pro feeders, do you use only thick syrup or also thin (1:1) syrup? If so do you get any problems with fermenting sirup left left in the pro feeders?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 2 года назад
We do use thin syrup in those feeders at times and there can be minor fermenting with the small amount the bees can't get to. Thick sucrose will ferment too. It just takes a bit longer.

You said you use the buckets and jars to simulate a nectar flow to get the bees to draw cone. Do you use the mannlake frame feeder for the same thing or is just to put weight on the colony?
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 2 года назад
We use the Mann Lake feeder primarily to put on weight.

@Erika Spannerman With two gallon buckets the feed is metered out over time whereas the hive top feeders give the bees enough access for them to empty them quickly.

Please, what is the scientific name for the white substance that you put in the sugar solution so that it does not ferment?

Household bleach is actually a mixture of chemicals, Its main constituent is a solution of ~3-6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), which is mixed with small amounts of sodium hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide, and calcium hypochlorite. www.chm.bris.ac.uk/motm/bleach/bleachh.htm#:~:text=What%20is%20bleach%3F,hydrogen%20peroxide%2C%20and%20calcium%20hypochlorite.

Myself, and others I know, feed while treating with Apiguard with no apparent problems. Although many use open feeding with success I'm not a fan of it. I don't like the idea of my bees mingling with others at the feeder.

Ha Bob it was great I have your phone number still I am thinking about buying some 2 gal buckets from u with the hole in them and the plugs as well, I have a question I am feeding do they store 1-1 in a dearth or just drink it down, I thought they would only store 2-1 also I have a question that has nothing to do with feeding, I watch a lot of videos and I watched 1 yesterday in the video the man put q cells in queen right colonies these colonies had queens that he did not like for some reason, any way he did not remove the old q he said that the q cell will emerge and the new q will replace the old one do u ever do it that way and your thoughts on it please thanks have a God Blessed week
@bobbinnie9872
@bobbinnie9872 2 года назад
Hi Frances. 1x1 will stimulate more brood production than 2x1 so not as much will be stored. I have dabbled a bit with introducing queen cells as you describe and it only works some of the time. It works best when the cell is introduced inside of a cell protecter, well above the brood nest.
