Mine finally arrived. I like how it could recognize the individual pieces. I was playing a quick game with the wife. Funny story the 4 year old took my wife’s knight from the board and ran away saying “horsey, horsey” The board knew the game shouldn’t continue. I didn’t even realize she took the piece.
I prefer wood of course :) most wooden chessboards have numbered squares :) For the official game I prefer numbered squares, but for home training, i prefer no numbered squares, as I don't need to flip the board.@el-ti6ym
Waited over a month for my EVO and when it finally arrived, several of the pieces were not recognized by the board - probably forgot to add sensors to the pieces in assembly. Been a nightmare to communicate with Chessnut to get the issue fixed and/or my money refunded.
I tried to use your promo code, and everything looked great. But when I was trying to pay, all of a sudden, the price had gone up "because of high demand" and was back to the original price. Not very serious if you ask me. I cancelled the order, waiting for them to get their stuff together... 😞
I would like to see more of this board and how it can work for improving chess and how it works with Chessable I’m considering purchasing and using chess dojo,Chessable. But I just don’t have a clear understanding of how to use or how I would.. hopefully more to come thanks!

I'd love to see them open to other apps or chess book readers like Forward Chess. It is super nice that even when watching a RU-vid chess video, the Chess Vision sees the moves and shows you on the physical board. A unexpected bonus was that you can have it show you the strong and weak moves - been great for hammering down openings.
Vinyl board + plastic pieces + old laptop = lots of money saved with very little difference in functionality. Until the pieces move themselves I don't really see the point of these devices.
I own a square off swap self moving chessboard only good for fish stock engine playing online no good you also have to pay a fee to upgrade as a matter of fact I believe Square Off has discontinued the Swap and Neo model only the Pro and Grand exist
The whole point of the e-board for me is not to have to use a screen. If I'm going to be making moves on screen with a laptop I might as well just use the laptop.
Nice device. Wonderful integration with the dojo and online chess. Too expensive for me, though. If I were to spend that much I'd like to have a larger board.
thet sell a tournament wood sized e board for $600 I think. cheaper than the evo. I have the original air you can get on sale for $170 small desk top board. Theres an all wood version of that same board for $300. good quality boards imo but most of all best piece recognition imo.
I bought this. I love this. But, to those looking to buy one, I can see their non-integrated board (example, the Chessnut Air) having a longer lifespan since those ones tie to an external device. I.e. *You* update your phone regularly and the board integrates with it. With the EVO, we are beholden to Chessnut to update that tablet software indefinitely. At some point in the future, they will surely end-of-life the product.
@@CalBru I suppose I can try to USB link my phone to the EVO. Bluetooth connection to a phone is denied. Android 11 is already effectively end-of-life as of December 2023. I received this Android 11 device in January. This is not ideal.
Indeed. The cell phone cannot connect to the EVO. So, if they ever stop updating the EVO tablet, at least with how it is configured today, the cell phone as the brains is not an option. Well, I suspect they'll support it at least for a few years. Maybe. I do hope they address the already-end-of-life OS they platform on.
I would add more possible good moves hints in the analysys section, not just the best move. In this way you understand even better what you can play. Also I would add an option to activate an engine while playing against the computer, in order for you to play and at the same time look at the best possible lines for the engine if you want
Very cool I was thinking about something like this for forever figured it’d be huge but it being this clean looking and being compatible with Chessable makes it 10x better. Would be awesome to use in bed or on the couch curious if could use an adhesive felt on the bottom of the pieces which would still register with the board that way it could be slanted at like 45 degrees while playing?
This is amazing, thanks for showcasing this board! I've been thinking about getting one. One question, is there any type of user accounts/profiles that you can setup for this? ie, could I setup an profile for myself, and one for my daughter, so when either of us plays we're not overwriting each others records, levels, etc? I would guess the different sites/apps you would just logout/login and manage profiles that way, but curious about the built-in "Training" (@ 7:15) and the "Career" (@ 7:56) modes?
I can't see much training app functionality for this board - using Chessable with pieces for instance looked slow and clunky compared with simply using Chessable on-screen. I think many of these online-connected boards will be sitting at the backs of cupboards soon after purchase. It's simply easier to play and train online using a PC or a phone. The physical pieces seem to add little except a gaming deficit on the clock because of having to move the physical pieces for your opponent's moves. It looks cool though. I'm thinking: nice toy....
The Chessnut Evo has all the features you need. However, there are two aspects I dislike. The playing field and the pieces are not tournament-sized. Additionally, the display and the pieces cannot be stored beneath the board. As potential enhancements, I envision adding double queens, bishops, knights, and rooks, along with a carrying case. It would be ideal if the pieces were made of wood and the board had a wooden appearance. Under those conditions, I would be willing to invest several hundred dollars in it.

And yes, the board should be tournament size. And indeed, it would be nice to slide out the display from under the board. And it would be nice if the pieces of the online opponent moved automatically (but then, of course, the board would be more expensive).
Combine this board with fast, quiet and seamless self-moving pieces and we have the board of the future. It would also need to have integration with popular online databases for research purposes and we have a winner.

4:25 Most green tiles arent great moves tho. Best thing to do here would be developing other pieces. The board suggests tho move the bishop, since c4 (bishops current tile) lights up as orange. Why would b5 be a good option for the bishop in this position? gets pushed back in the next move???
It doesn't (or maybe it does but I haven't turned it on!) tell you the best move, it tells you the best move for THAT PIECE. I actually like this, as when I look at openings I can see what fails (and hopefully figure out why)
It's a great board and a very cool investment! If you love chess already, it could be a very nice investment for you. If you're not sure how you feel about enjoying chess longterm there is nothing wrong with investing in a more affordable board and deciding whether to upgrade later.
not many full reviews of that board. I have the original air, hope one day they sell the wood pieces seperate for me to buy. I was thinking of drilling my own since I already have a set of sensors, but that would probably be a nightmare lol.
@@cooloutac Are you satisfied with the original air? Mine is nothing but trouble. I stopped using it, because way too often it stops working mid-game. Chessnut has promised to fix it for 6 months now, but all I get is silence.
@@dcatteeu yes I use it everyday it's never stopped working for me. What is wrong with yours? The piece recognition on this board is better than the dgt and millenniums. Actually I did drop a piece that hit the corner of my computer and became inconsistent and the company sent me a whole set of black pieces for free.
@@dcatteeu are you saying it loses connection mid-game or actually just completely shuts off? If you are losing connection to the Bluetooth on your phone sometimes you just have to hit the refresh button in the app to bring it back. The company has sent Me Free replacement pieces so they're pretty great. But maybe they are ignoring you now because there is really nothing they could do about that sort of issue? Your phone is also a factor but I don't really have any issues with mine. I once complained to them that my board was not working and all the lights are coming on and they thought I was crazy and then I realized that I was putting the black and white pieces on the wrong sides hahaha
@@cooloutac The connection is fine. The moves I make on the board are still registered in the app. But the moves of the opponent are no longer indicated by the LEDs, so I have to look at the phone to know what move the opponent made. I can then make that move on the physical board. IMHO, that defeats the purpose of the board, I could as well play on my phone.
Apologies if I missed it but does this have the same issue as the chessnut air where if you drag a piece across multiple squares it will pick up and lock in the first square? I've had a lot of games ruined with the air at faster time controls because of this when moving pieces more than one square
I just got mine and when looking at it from the side it seems like it has a very slight concave shape, like it has a slight dip when looking at it from the side, is yours a 100% level with the table?
Just received mine in the mail, it seems like its working fine but it has a slight concave shape almost like its hanging low on the center bottom by a few millimeters, is this normal?
The board of the future can move the pieces on its own aka SquareOff board. Not making you manually move it. This is nothing more then a novelty product. Never will be more then that
Its the future. Imagine you can load a set of tactical positions in the software and the board will automatically present these positions without you needing to set it up? And will immediately PLAY the move or line that shows you why you got it wrong/right.. rather then some dumb lights lighting up. And then sets up the next one when your ready Thats convenient as fuck. Convenience is king for tbe consumer.. always. And that is why when its optimized it is the path forward and will be something everyone wants to buy
@@spiked415 Right - that does make sense for puzzles for sure, I hadnt thought of that. Don't think I'd care for full games tho, setting up a board every half hour isn't too bad. But Your point about fully optimized is key -- so far what I've seen of these automated boards feels pretty far from mature, and does look to me like more of a gadgety thing that I wouldn't want to have to rely on We'll see in a few years! In the meantime I'll enjoy my Evo for what I see it as: an input method for chess, i.e., a "chess keyboard" 😁
Have you read reviews on those squareoff boards? THey don't last long and have terrible customer support. Something about aloud grinding noise and it not working have been common lol. But I've had my chessnut air for 2 years not a single issue except I dropped and broke a piece which they replaced for me with a set of black pieces for free.
@@cooloutac thats why i said of the future not the present. The idea is right the execution isnt there yet and chessnut isnt even trying to go for it.. theres a million light up boards.. nothing special about this, nor its AI/computer feature
Chessup is plasticky, requires a phone running an app, has tiny pieces, doesn't have the same choice of evaluation and training capabilities, and Chessnut works with OTB play. Evo offers a lot more for an additional ~$60.
chessup doesn't even have full piece recognition lmao.... WHich means you have to constantly calibrate board and deal with recognition issues. Chessnut is a real board like a tournement DGT board, with full piece recognition which makes a HUGE difference. no calibration ever necessary, you can capture and move pieces however you choose, in whatever order you want with it never being a problem. I can't understate how important that is.
Stupidest idea ever for a chessboard. There is no way to keep the technology of the tablet up-to-date over the lifetime of a PHYSICAL CHESSBOARD, which is basically infinite. The description at their web site says Android 11 and Stockfish 15. I don't think it is a great idea to be promoting e-waste in 5 years for what should be a lifetime product.
An electronic chessboard is not a lifetime product. You go into that knowing that. That being said, it'll let as long as Chessnut supports it. That's for the electronic bits. The board and pieces will last indefinitely.
@@t0dd000 I have my Mephisto Exclusive board from the 1980s which still works perfectly with an elo of over 2100. Electronic boards can be lifetime products if well made and not based on core technology that is likely to be quickly superseded.
