I don’t know why the miners called this the ChickenCat Mine… That isn’t the official name, of course, but it is what the miners called it. Why? One would assume that there is a good story here. I wish I knew it.
For those of you that may be wondering, this was a lead carbonate mine.
This was a little outside of our normal area of exploring, but, as I remarked in the video, the mines are where you find them rather than where you necessarily expect them to be.
Does anyone know what a ChickenCat looks like?

You can see the full TVR Exploring playlist of abandoned mines here: goo.gl/TEKq9L

Several kind viewers have asked about donating to help cover some of the many expenses associated with exploring these abandoned mines. Inspired by their generosity, I set up a Patreon account. So, if anyone would care to chip in, I’m under TVR Exploring on Patreon.
Thanks for watching!
*****
Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever. But, you know what? We enjoy doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a century, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

That cats a runner. Cables no hydraulics, guaranteed pony motor to start. Check fuel and oil you should be good. It's old, late forties early fifties but its a cat, as long as there's not a hole in the side of the block it'll go.

Oh I hadn't noticed before.... Congrats on the 100K! Always good to know others are also enjoying the content. I liked this explore... The winzes and mice waited until the last drifts to appear. I guess left hand rules paid off for this mine. Seemed a wide range of colors in the rock. Nice.

Your contact zone looked like a water line. Judging by the moisture in there, how smooth the foor was and only small indentations from where the rail stops were I'd say it was flooded at least waist deep for quite awhile. Reason the floors not cracked from drying out is because there's just enough moister to keep it from doing so.

@@worldtraveler930 As many mines as TVR and I have been through together we've come across drifts exactly like this many times. You just don't really take note of it until later...or if the water is still at that line then you really take note of it. Shits freezing in there.

Yes, I expect that older Cat was fully operational and had not been sitting all that long. The tracks looks to be in excellent shape for a tractor that is probably around 1950 vintage. You did not comment on the structures that could be seen behind the Cat in some views. I note that whatever they were, there was rudimentary fencing around them like you see around open shafts.

Should start a petition with the USGS to assign a new geological classification for "Holific" rock structures. The only requirement for classification is the thought of "Holy F*c" when you discover you're standing in an unreinforced section cut through it.... and maybe the irresistible urge to stop doing so.

Please babble and repeat your knowledge of the mineralizations and different colors, If only once per video. I know what Galina and quartz with gold is and some other stuff is by watching but please refresh us every video! I forget what the bright white (10:10), Black Rock and yellow streaks (10:18) and blue stuff is. Please feel free to educate us every video at least once! See those really distinct layers right there (10:48). I assume they are quartz but would rather hear your description. You see it with your eyes, not on video so your interpretation means everything!

It would be interesting to see what's down there. Often the best stuff is in the most difficult areas to access. That second ladder looked in good condition, but no way of knowing if that is the case all the way down. Or even how far "all the way down" is. The larger winze didn't look so good. It would be best to be roped up for that explore.

My guess for the squared off piece of wood jammed into the vent pipe is it was a plug with the possibility of removal if needed? These miners were craftsmen that just used scraps, probably from a huge support timber smoothed out to avoid splinters and air leaks. I can imagine a whole back story about how this section kept leaking and the bosses would just make them do temporary patches then one day a guy has some free time and grabs a short timber scrap and makes this. He puts it in and the bosses shake their heads and walk away as one yells “that’s a half a days pay”
@MildaGoesWild

That's what I was thinking, maybe they didn't need the 3 way air flow anymore, just for it to go round the corner/up/down so the mainline was sealed.

is there any existing film evidence of miners starting off a mine tunnel?? because it seems to me and lots of others that these tunnels were already here when the first european settlers arrived. all mines/tunnels have different rock/petrification of these structures from the old world and also thinking anatomly mapping of the landscapes worldwide is very interesting and there is strong evidence suggesting it.
