Write one! Seriously do it! It’s not hard to write a song just lyrics and music. It might be popular. You don’t have to play and instrument you can sing the melody and lyrics.
@@kimdeese6410 well it was her opinion correct ,however going to a foreign country and talking shit about the president isn't cool! They took the Dixie chick's off about every frigging country radio station in America!
There's a time and place for everything. Going to a foreign country and talking shit about a sitting president isn't cool in my book. Thanks for your service. SEMPER FI
Pete Zereeah Nice try loser. You need to get out more...hillbillie. Check the rest of the world out. As for depressed, yeah right..I live in one of the best countries in the world , with a life style you can only dream of. It's your country that has the wide variety of anti depressants for all the bizarre individuals. You are a "type".....smart ass.... who likes to put down others. Doesn't work on me..loser. As for the Beattles..they wrote alot of meaningless pop tunes........This however has real meaning. Something you clearly lack in your life .......do yourself a favour....go for the magnum.
When I was beaten within an inch of my life he actually did send me a letter telling me basically to shut up or he'll finish me off. I never shut up and fought for 2 years in court for justice for myself and in the name of all women in DV situations...I won the case 3 months ago🎉 This song got me thru those 2 years of hell and made me come out stronger than ever
Thank you. Advocating is hard. I choose to believe we can take our pain and use it to help others. It’s draining work. But if it wasn’t for people like you, change wouldn’t happen. ❤❤❤
Australian. Didn’t get to hear much about the story behind this song, but always loved it. Once I found out it took on a whole new meaning and now bring a lump to my throat each time I hear it. Good on you Natalie. Stay angry. There is so much to be angry about!
I had no real clue who the Dixie Chicks were apart from knowing the name until this Album burning bs after they took a stand against the war in Iraq. Since "Not Ready To Make Nice" and the film "Shut up & Sing" I am a fan, These women have my deepest and most sincere admiration and respect.
+Donna McCubbin Turns out, the Democrats defunded the Iraqi defense fund so it wouldn't get over run by jihadists, just like they defunded the support promised to South Viet Nam. So now, the Dems have TWO wars in which the souls of Americans were wasted because of peace bureaucracy. Hope you get a little Sharia the next time you're out.
To all the DC haters here, who railed against Natalie Maines and threw out your Dixie Chicks CDs (because she honestly expressed her embarrassment of President Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the Neocons who lied us into Iraq): these words were written and sung by Maines especially for you... 2:00 "how in the world Can the words that I said Send somebody so over the edge That they'd write me a letter Saying that I better Shut up and sing Or my life will be over?" Simply one of the best songs ever written in the last 5 decades.
@Brian Dahlen Appropriately named..Gaslighter. They've been doing that for nearly two decades now, Gaslighting the public. Read the playlist...many are the tunes they originally recorded. They finally had to give credit for writing to the original songwriters on the rest, but you can see where they laid claim to "songwriting" wherever they could. Four days in, and Itunes had them at #1 for a day. Seems despite creating thousands of online accounts to request their new song, they got a one day blip there. You see, itunes list is developed from both actual sales and play requests with 100 spins equaling 1 sale on all major platforms. They have an easier time recruiting others to create multiple accounts in Canada, so expect it to be a raging chart hit there for a while. Even I can write a script to get on multiple accounts and repeatedly request and play any tune over and over again. I would not be surprised if the DC's spent the last year or so lining up any recruits they could to start repeatedly spinning the song. It's not doing so well on any other charts. I do expect that Sony (tho they aren't connected now, but were big time in the 90's), being the big dog at the table at RIAA, will be issuing a Gold award prematurely as they did when the DC's were on top of their game. I'm sure you WILL like it, as it contains a lot of old material.
Everything about this!!!! I was living in TX when this happened. I’m so proud of these strong ladies! The song writing, the message, the vocals, the harmony, the emotion, and then when the strings come in! Oh my gosh!!!!❤
I just want to say, I saw their first round of tours in Canada after all this Bush statements happened. I think all three of you are so brave, you stood together, solid and strong, And I was so proud to be a part of that Toronto audience. I honestly think I’d it as piece of music history, and I think these women honestly deserve an apology. Ahead of their time.
I am just in awe of Natalie's emotions. her voice is amazing but her emotion is just as raw as it was when this song first came out. amazing. thank you for sharing your story. thank you for not apologizing. the amount of young girls who will hopefully learn that their voice is just as important as any guys is inspiring.
This will forever be my favorite performance of any song ever written/produced/ recorded. If it was possible to time travel, this concert would be my destination. No words could ever truly explain the honesty and bravery it took for this to even occur. The fact that each one of these women never let the negativity and controversy affect their integrity is honorable. One should never doubt their own worth based on others opinions. But I guess some Americans fail to acknowledge the contradiction they made by shunning talented genuine artists for expressing their first amendment.
+Galen Warren Both Amsterdam gigs sold out, May gigs in Glasgow and Dublin sold out. Just to save you the bother of finding the details. Most Republicans couldn't find their ass with both hands. I mean, who'd think Donald Trump is fit to lead anything apart from his dog?
Wow. I was actually speechless for a good 5 minutes, such a good song and this performance is one of my favorite out of any performance I’ve ever seen. They’ve always been a favorite of mine
Saw them a few years back at a show in Austin, TX honoring Lloyd Maines. They sang this song and the entire audience, on their feet already, screamed the words in unison, pumped their fists, stomped their feet and wept uncontrollably. It was one of the most emotional experiences of my life. Miss them terribly.
I love this song. Everything. The violin, the funny line "I kind of like it" The message, the history, gives me goosebumps just thinking how gutsy this song was at the time.
Part of our Freedom of Speech is hearing things we don't like. Things we all don't agree on. The minute people in power try to silence that, we all lose. #TheChicks #StandUp
Man I was just sitting here thinking. You know hindsight is 20/20 and it’s easy to look back and see things clearly when you’re reflecting 20 years later. Wanna know who history has redeemed probably more than anyone? The Dixie Chicks/The Chicks. The Iraq war was a colossal mistake by pretty much every reasonable measure. They knew this way before anyone else and weren’t afraid to say it. It may have cost them in the short run but in my opinion history has more than redeemed them. I’m gonna try to go to one of their shows the next time they tour. They had a show in my town last year but I was stuck at work. Would love to see them in person.
Still one of the great modern country music bands EVER! It's a complete disgrace the way they were treated for expressing an opinion, especially since the very faction that attacked them for criticizing a POTUS have spent 8 years doing far worse to our current POTUS.
OMG. Can't believe that it took 8 long years before I hear this song for the first time. I am absolutely stunned. Right now I can't imagine listening something else than this song. Whatched also "Shut up and sing" and was shocked about so much ignorance I saw. The Dixie chicks will become a place in my all time favorites. Thank you so much girls.
+Mark Williams There were a whole lot of us who knew they were exactly right at the time. If Toby Keith was worth a pinch of shit, he'd issue a public apology to the Dixie Chicks over the whole issue.
+prairie wanderer LOL. Keep dreaming. Toby said if they wanted a fight, he'd bury them. Well, he didn't have to. Fat Nat dug their professional graves and pulled the dirt in behind her. They are gone and for good reasons.
prairie wanderer Actually, the low brows like yourself wouldn't understand anything critical of some idiotic singer you admire. BTW, Toby outsold the DC's in the end, and he will be remembered fondly by his fans. The millions of DC fans that made them A list entertainers in the first place? LOL. Not so much. Keep digging, low brow. I like the way you dirty your mouth with your feet.
+Galen Warren Dixie Chicks are still touring. You're sounding like they've given up. They haven't, and their fans haven't given up on them, either. You see, I'm from Europe and we've never even heard of Toby Keith. Who's the loser now, eh?
I knew this song was so powerful even being a child and not realizing what these girls werer going thru I still felt the impact... now i find myself always playing this song in situations where I feel angry... or used..sometimes i get emotional.. such an impactful song.
She turned... A DEATH THREAT into a protest anthem and rallying cry that sold millions of albums and sold out arenas. Oh... And it's a gorgeous song. What more is there to say? 😐
The album sold pretty well, but the tour was not successful. The whole Bush controversy really did kill their arena status, unfortunately, and they’ve never recovered. Which is really sad because touring is an artists main source of income these days. Watch Shut Up and Sing. Tells the whole story, pretty heartbreaking. The dumbest part of it all is that the same idiots who cancelled the chicks are the very people who are whining about cancel culture today
@@rodneyhendrix2450 please please preach louder. See people don't understand their actions have consequences that's why I told this other lady at the store I was like why was it okay back in the early 2000s for a lot of Republican country fans to cancel the Dixie Chicks for their expression of freedom of speech but now look at the flip side. People learn from from their older constituents. And because a lot of people back then made stupid decisions it's the reason why people think they can bully Kanye West for being a trump supporter simply because he's a black man and hip hop. It's so childish no matter what music genre you're in you have the right to speak your opinion if you're an artist or not. I don't believe in if you're Entertainer your freedom of speech as a citizen should be taken away and you should just entertain people and act like a robot absolutely not. The Dixie Chicks did not deserve that and I'm a big fan of them because they spoke out when it was unpopular nowadays everybody just wants to be cool and woke and yes woke culture is annoying but back then it was different. Them people lost a lot but they gained a lot because today and 2022 we can look back and say those people were wrong. You have the right natural support of artists if you don't agree with her talking points but there was no need to burn CDs to try to ruin that careers call news stations to not get their music played send death threats all of that was extra
This song and its message have gotten me through some times. Everytime I want to give up, I picture all the hurtful words people have said, doubting me, and I gather myself and claw my way forward. And I thank you for giving me the words to find my strength
This might be the best record made during the 2000s....I never thought they would be able to make a better album than "Home" and boy, was I proved wrong by "Taking the Long Way." Their artistry is outstanding and they are brilliant musicians and songwriters. I'm a massive fan of their music and I'm glad they are still out there touring and doing things their way!
Incredibly sad when you think of all the years we missed out on these amazingly talented girls making music and over what politics, who knows what more they would have given us,so sad!!!
Galen Warren every artist writes with a team. Check our most songs, a long list of names for who wrote it. Taylor Swift might be an exception for example, but most artists have a team of songwriters and producers. There is no “I” in TEAM ya know ;)
@@galenwarren3579 Where did you hear that regarding "Not Ready to Make Nice?" Everywhere I read says they co-wrote the song, and that's what Dan Wilson himself says too in videos where he talks about it. I'm curious as to your source for that claim.
@@chadjohnson-authormusician8072 Listen to the conversation that both Dan and Nat describe. Dan asks if the song should possibly have a line or two that gives them an out of the hard line, "not ready to make nice", and Nat says absolutely not...but beyond that, they don't publicly discuss the alleged co-writing that went on for that song. Even the sisters outed their "co-writing" by saying how wonderful it was to work with such talented people and that all they had to do is express what they wanted the songs to say, and these "wonderful people" made it happen. However, you only need to look at the history of the DC's (and the industry) to understand why this is absolute bogus that the DC's co wrote those songs on that album. Just prior to that album, it was determined by mutual agreement within the industry, that song writers are due a percentage of sales on a song in addition to a one time payment like they received before. The DC's with Sony at their back, insisted on co writing credits as a prerequisite to having their work on the DC album to raise the DC's share . All they had to do was submit a theme and talk over the results with the many well established songwriters, and EVERY public statement about that album supports this. A bit like cake tasters after the real baker chefs had cooked. To further support the notion that they didn't write these songs, consider their history. They wrote two, count them, two songs in the decades' long history of the band and the multiple albums they put out prior. How likely is it, that after all that time and doing nothing but cover tunes written by others, that they could come up with a complete album where they were "songwriters"? That's not a switch you throw on, suddenly. Oh, you might have ideas, but to suddenly burst forth with that many? For every song, there is a real, well known professional songwriter on the credits. Given the disingenuous history of the DC's the needle swings toward the BS mark.
Still the best country music group bar none in my opinion. Natalie's vocal prowess hasn't diminished a bit despite the years that has gone by. With a voice like that who needs autotune! And boy those harmonies still give me the chills (in a good way). :)
Listened to this CD over and over. Got me through the 70 mile evening commute from Daytona to Orlando to teach, through the blinding downpours, the speeding bikers up on their rear wheel, even the Love Bugs carpeting by windshield as I drove over Lake Jessup bridge. Love ya all!
Usually, I'm afraid to watch videos of songs when I like the original recording/video so much already. This was such a surprise, from the opening notes. It got better and better as it went along and when the denoument arrived I thought they would falter. But they didn't. Message sent and received beautifully. Awe inspiring.
I dont understand how they can get so much backlash on one little comment, but i never knew anyone to say anything nice about george bush? I think that is why Natalie is so upset, and still upset till this day. She was right just noone else had the balls to admit it and country music is all about americana so i think in all honesty it was just country diehards that rejected and called the girls out. Just because whats country music without beer and american flags? If she was making music in any other genre she would have been fine. Natalie felt betrayed by the country music community... I dont blame her. This is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard natalie is a beautiful singer and honestly she has too much depth to her then to be locked down to stereotypes and the country mudic genre. These girls are beautiful inside and out. And they are raw so real they make you feel something you dont see that all the time country music... Well you rarely do in fact
It's been more than a decade. I don't even know if it's possible for them to come back, though I'm dying to hear a new masterpiece from them. What I do not forget is that they made a global impact after that incident, they won multiple grammy awards that 2006 ceremony because their album was about the incident itself,it even sold millions, despite the country music fan bash. I always thought they will continue but istead retired anyway.
She wasn't "right" about anything. She was pandering to a largely anti war crowd at Shepherds Bush in England, and she got called on that by the very fan base that made them A list entertainers in the first place. They subsequently wrecked their future careers by doubling down on their pandering, trying to turn it into a sincere sentiment. People at the time weren't fooled by this. Maines herself had 3 national TV appearances during the year long runup to that war. Did she say anything then? NO. Ever before at any other place or time before Shepherd's Bush? NO. She was pandering, and nothing more.
Here is the story behind this song. This is the song to respond to what they say during the run-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003. "Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." How brave they are to stand up for the peace, because we know that the revenge to each other will never end. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Chicks
And now look today.... So much people say so much more to the American president (or other president of other countries ) - any consequences for them. No.... time change and this is right. The freedom of speech is the right of every human 🤘. I'm happy for the new album in May...
They pandered for profit and got called on it by the very people who made them A list entertainers in the first place. That's the back story on this song.
This video was posted 11 years ago but I'm no stranger to the song. Been a fan of the Chicks since the very beginning and I'm talking before they were on the radio! I never turned my back on you ladies. I cry everytime I hear this song, not because I'm sad but because I'm so extremely proud you are from TEXAS! You may not ever see this but I will know that it's here. Sending all the love and light, good vibes and keep doing what you're doing!!!
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger And how in the world can the words that I said Send somebody so over the edge That they’d write me a letter Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing Or my life will be over
