There were a lot of really iconic Klasky Csupo Nicktoons back in the day and I can say without a doubt that they all had a similar feel to them. Rugrats, The Wild Thorberrys, AAAHH!!! Real Monsters... They all had a similar feel to them at their core. There was one Klasky Csupo cartoon that would really stick out to me when compared to the others. It was just really different. It was a cartoon that in my opinion, served as the embodiment of the cartoons we watched as kids growing up with us. That's why today, on our nostalgic walk down memory lane, we're going to check out the episode of As Told by Ginger that stuck with me more than any other all these years later...
Thank you for watching!

this is the only episode I truly remembered cause I was a depressed teen girl at the time and I was shocked by how many people in the show actually tried to step in to help Ginger (ie; teacher, psychologist, mom) because my issues were either ignored or outright denied by the adults in my life.

This episode did a great job touching on the tortured artist myth. That in order to write about a subject like trauma or depression, you need to have actually experienced that. It also touches upon the problem of assuming a character is an author insert. Lois hit the nail on the head. Ginger wasn't able to write about a girl with depression because she knows first hand what it's like to have depression. She was able to write that because Ginger is sensitive and willing to understand other's feelings.

I wish more people understood this. People say to be sociol and have freinds but than tell you not to have empathy or something is mentally wrong with you. People want surface level care not genuine empathy because true empathy means you have a bad mental space. This is why people who have genuine health issues can't get genuine help.

I'm in my 30s and still remember this episode very well. I had the same situation like Ginger, with my mom being called w/the therapist because my middle school writing was "heavy"😂They asked my mom how I would know how to write serious stuff and she said "I'm a substance abuse counselor and I don't sugar coat life for my kid". The teacher and therapist were shook and never said anything to me after that...I was lucky to have a mom like Lois

Noelle for the first couples seasons, was, in fact a background/filler character. So it’s sort of an inside joke on the show runners and production to make what is essentially a NPC a supporting character. And how perfect that the episode was centered around someone who wants to disappear.

I feel like you kinda missed the point of Courtney's constant need for attention being part of the whole point of Ginger being a well adjusted person, and Courtney who looks well adjusted being the person who had an issue in actuality. Writers and Artist do delve into dark themes but not because their sad or depressed, thats not always the case, sometimes its to challenge themselves or explore other forms of art. I still have to hand it to Lois she handled this so well and the fact she tells Ginger that she doesn’t have to see the school psychiatrist just puts a huge cherry on top. As Told By Ginger was always a show I could really relate to, especially as a young writer, who encountered people who would take a "dark" poem or story I wrote as some confession as inner trauma or conflict.

Man, I grew up watching As Told By Ginger. I was the targeted demograph for it, especially since I was entering middle school. I didn't understand depression until I was older. Looking back at this cartoon and a lot of Klasky Csupo cartoons, really touched a lot of serious topics that you don't really see being touched upon in kid shows. As Told By Ginger is a great cartoon, but it's certainly one of those 'you have to have been there or experienced that' to really feel it
@theotherther1
@theotherther1 Год назад
I was the target demographic too, but I didn't want to see it because I was more into dumb cartoon slapstick. Now, as an adult, I know it's a great show but there is very little about Ginger or anyone else in the show I can see in myself at that age. I'm on the spectrum and I can relate to the medical emergency episode, I just wasn't social at all until near the end of high school. If someone was upset about a dark poem or story I wrote, I would mock them and write more of that stuff. Fashion and the perspectives of others never factored into my plans for myself. It leaves me wondering what I would have turned out to be if I had simply given Ginger a chance. Would I have seen her as a role model, or been able to empathize with her? I could do that to Homestar Runner, a creature with no arms, so why not a realistically written human girl?

I was flat out fantasizing about strangling Miranda for how she treated Ginger especially in this scene. That was beyond disgusting and without a doubt the worst thing Miranda has ever done/ said. Loved the video😊 I do have to point out one thing though. The rap group being exclusively for girls has it’s place. For example, you mentioned how Carl considered Noelle a non-entity. It’s awful, but it was only truly through falling in love with her that she gained value in his eyes. This is a sentiment that can be really prevalent and is really common in male spaces (young and old). Also, being raised as a girl/fem can often mean being raised to make space for and centre boys/masc individuals even to your own detriment. Having a place to figure out your humanity without the presence of a type of individual that routinely dehumanises you and that you are continuously conditioned to yield your agency to is important. That way, you don’t have to divide your effort between introspection and battling internalised societal expectations. An example is having youth groups where kids can talk about things without having to worry about their parents input/viewpoint. It’s also important to note that just because we didn’t see that there was a group in the show exclusively for boys and mascs, doesn’t mean there wasn’t one. You’re comment about it’s existence asserting that it is ONLY a fem issue has merit, but also presents a false dichotomy in the reaction. The presence of one does not negate the presence or need for another. Now make no mistake. I believe all people of all genders deserve a space like this and that there is great value in having both mixed and separate types of spaces. I just wanted to shed light on this angle.😊

I honestly can relate to this episode because I lost my grandfather when I was 10 years old. I began to write poems and stories that allowed me to express my feelings and it helped me get through that tough time in my life. Though I don’t write anymore, always have an outlet for yourself to express your thoughts and feelings whether it’s talking to someone or writing because it will eat you up inside. I’m still going through a tough time now with the loss of my grandmother, aunt and cousin within the past two years.

I was a big "As Told by Ginger" fan growing up and this episode freaked me out as a kid although I couldn't quite put my finger on why. Like you, I was too young at the time to catch the theme of struggling with mental health, but I was still deeply troubled at the idea of Ginger's poem protagonist wanting to "just disappear". I thought it meant she wanted to run away, vanishing without a trace so her family and friends would never see her again or be able to find her. Now that I'm older, and am a writer myself, I'm able to appreciate even more the depth and layers of this episode. Not only does it touch on mental health issues, but also something us artists face all the time: Putting pieces of ourselves, consciously or unconsciously, into our characters and how that affects our work and how we and others perceive it.

I do remember this episode, though younger-me only recalled the parts of Ginger reciting the poem, and her friends/others treating her different because they thought she was "upset". Growing up to see how the episode actually was, well feels eye-opening! I really do resonate with Ginger, and her arc was really good here. I think the whole episode is handled pretty well Had completed forgot about Carl & Hoodie though.. they're B-plot was.. interesting. Just like them lol! What Carl eventually came to by the end was quite sweet, I'm glad they did that with him. And Noelle is an interesting character 🤔 Courtney and Miranda really hurt in this, as little as they showed up, like that's ridiculous! But guess that's good for their character types huh? Another on the list of savage, sad moments of a true bully(or emotional immature teen). :(

I was so ready for you to say that Ginger was writing about some repressed memory, like when her father left or if he died (I haven't seen the show in years) but to find out that no, nothing bad happened to her, she didn't experience anything horrible at a young age to make her write the poem... she's just a really good writer, gotta say that's a breath of fresh air. Especially when she kept saying to everyone she wasn't depressed, but they insisted she was after reading the poem, goes to show people sometimes just get it wrong when they think they've interpreted a piece of art or media. "Oh the author meant this", or "Oh this is really about the author's life". A lot of the time, that's just wrong. It has nothing to do with the author outside of they created it. No personal trauma or feelings injected into it.

I'm going to disagree with the "girls only" being a problem in terms of therapy sessions. I suspect that "girls only" in this instance is for this particular group and there may be other therapy sessions that include boys as well. I'm not sure if you're aware, but there's actually a lot of group therapy sessions that are strictly women only. This is because a lot of women who go through therapy do tend to deal with abusive men, be it physically, mentally. You almost realized this very point, because you mentioned toxic masculinity being an issue because of being excluded, but the reason why men are excluded from female only therapy sessions is specifically because of toxic masculinity to begin with. I just wanted to point that out, as while from the outside looking in, it seems unreasonable, but I can assure you there is a legitimate reason for that. Many girls/women just will not open up if there are boys/men in group. That's not to say boys/men do not need therapy or that they do not have their own issues themselves, but understand that this is not an uncommon situation.

I once let my face fall, just once. And the school psychiatrist or case worker or whatever started grilling me, saying she knew something was wrong and her acting like she knew everything about me was getting me heated, then she said thats how she knew cause I was getting angry :/!!! I ended up saying something fake, pulling up my sleeves and saying look! I dont even cut anymore (I never cut) but she wanted a sob story so bad and to know that my upbringing was getting me down so I just gave her one. I was so glad to get outta that office and never let my face fall again omg. Its not the exact same, of course! But gosh is it so upsetting to just... feel crazy. I don't feel the psychologist snapped at Courtney, she pointed what she believed was the root of her problems and gave it to her. I feel for her too, being that in need of attention is also a flag that must be addressed. I always felt this show did that for many characters; you didn't have to just "be on one side", but had many layers in them so you could have a hint on their perspective. Courtney's problems are real too, because of what happens to her in her mind; for that matter, she was probably struggling more than Ginger, that had a strong support system in her mom and wasn't really in that mindset.

I watched As Told By Ginger while I was in late middle school, early high school. This episode resonated with me because I had a similar situation happen to me. My high school never had a creative writing class due to "only 4 students signed up," so I was told to take an art class. I suck at visual art. But one day, the tables were arranged in a circle with a bunch of random objects in the center. The teacher gave us all a 5x7 index card and told us to draw 10 objects as thumbnail sketches. Once everyone was finished, she collected the cards and told us we could do whatever for the rest of the class. The next day, with the tables back in order, she handed back the cards, told us to circle one sketch, and to make a full sized , detailed portrait from it. We could alter or refine aspects of the object but also had to write a story to go with it. I chose a jacket hanging off the back of a chair. When the teacher came around reading our stories, she started to "Oh? How cute." to "Oh? Oh..." before pulling me aside to ask if I needed to see the counselor. I told her that I didn't think so, so she requested I change the somewhat darker ending I had written. Because I trusted the teacher (and did not trust the counselor), I overhauled my story to be less "dark," but I felt it lost impact. She was pleased enough that my story helped the project enough that I was one of six of her Art 1 students to have their art showcased in the main lobby of the school. The thing was my senior year I did have feeling that were reflective of my darker writing style and I felt like no one there was able to help. That same guidance counselor even made things worse by sharing information from our confidential sessions with other teachers. Luckily, between some well-meaning friends, that art teacher and our really cool music teacher, they helped to get me to a professional therapist. I don't usually do anything like this on public forums, but I just wanna say feelings are valid. Sometimes, we need help, and that's okay, too. If anyone needs help, please reach out. Excellent video, dude, hang in there.

To me it was obvious at the time that un her actions and mannerism she did not appear to be under any risk of self harm, watching it again 20 years later I can't help but think that most of the people in such situations appear to be quite normal until something awful happens. For me the highlight as a child was Carl's B-plot. In a way it stuck to me how much the boys came to know Noelle after never putting attention on her just because the wanted to know if the dissapearing powder was working or not. As a side note as a child I never thought the dissapearing powder would make her dissapear, i just tought she would become invisible.

She was worried about me. I was so proud and then so sad because I didn't understand the issue at the time. im gonna say that honestly carl's ark, where he at first thinks someone in expendable but then realizes they were beautiful and the least expendable person to him, is kinda the same message as ginger's told from a different point of view, it's kinda a love it or loose it kinda story- and ties into the title of the episode- and then she was gone- considering the state of schools back then and the tendency for kids to bully relentlessly and often think people are expendable and the mental health crisis among youth in the late 90's and early 2000's i feel like this episode, ironically especially carl's half, really aimed to teach kids a lesson about trying to make people that THEY dont think is important disappear-

This was my ear of shows, but I didn't have Nickelodeon. I never really liked the visual styles of these shows but I am genuinely surprised by how deep this is. It gave me a new appreciation for these shows and I'm more than willing to give it a try. Also, from my experience with mental health, it's always scary, the idea that your loved ones could change and behave differently once they learn about your mental issues. But I think being honest about it is still the way to go. Bottling up emotions and overthinking your behaviors as to not make it show is worse for you. And it's also possible to tell people "I am the same me I was yesterday before you knew this. This has been with me for a while now and if you liked me before knowing, nothing has changed aside for you knowing. You brought me plenty of joy and happy moments so please, you don't have to change your behaviors around me" my friends felt relieved when I told them. They felt like they had to give me extra care and I didn't want that. Some where scared I would be an extra load of responsibility on their shoulders. I think comunicating is the way to go.

Something you're forgetting in all of this is that these are kids. Ginger is in 7th grade, so 12-13, and Carl is like... 10? I think he's supposed to be in 5th grade. Of course, they're going to say and do things that are morally repugnant. That's what kids do. The point is that they learn from it. Courtney is the way she is because her parents are career obsessed, and overly competitive, and they've pushed that attitude on her and largely ignored her for her entire life so she seeks attention wherever she can get it. You've gotta cut kids some slack on the morality department.

One contrast at the beginning I took note of was how while Ginger was going deep into the mindset of someone who was lonely and morose, eventually literally disappearing, while Carl was off searching for someone he deemed "expendable" to experiment on... or rather, experiment off due to a lack of empathy. Ginger seeks to enter, Carl skims to off... in a sense.

I've had diagnosed severe depresion since I was 12. The ONE time the school stepped in was when I had to write an autobiography for my twelfth year English class. I made my teacher cry and they called my parents because they thought I was suicidal. I don't know what they were expecting. Was I supposed to gloss over the sad parts of my history? It was well documented with them that my parents were meth users. They knew. Or maybe I'm as good a writer as Ginger lol.

Eh i am not going to shit all over Courtney because she's obsessed with being the center of attention. You can't say "mental illness manifests in many different ways" then act like she's just abhorrent & not suffering from mental illness. The need to be the center of attention & doing anything to get it is a huge sign of emotional neglect or feeling absolutely terrible about one's self. The therapist pointing it out is an actual thing good therapists do. Many of us focus on trivial bullshit so we don't have to deal with trauma or depression or whatnot. She needs outside validation to feel like she matters. I know that I'm overanalyzing it sure, but it's videos overanalyzing cartoons that I'm here for, after all lol. Now her little buddy there, yeah, I can agree that's she's just terrible for the sake of being terrible. I was older when this show came out, I honestly thought everyone was kinda bratty 😂. Maybe I should watch it as the adult I am and not a high schooler, I would probably appreciate it more

As told by Ginger did a fantastic job of showing life in that awkward in between of being a kid and being an adult in a way that the preteen viewers could relate to and understand. There just hasn’t been anything quite like it since I don’t think… and Gingers mum was the G.O.A.T she was an awesome mum. Working full time as a nurse, raising two kids on her own and always having time for her kids when they needed/wanted her.

I hope when you do the big Ginger video that you talk about how Dodie is the single worst 'best friend' in the Nickelodeon canon. Seriously, everything must be about her no matter what. Note how the first thing she says to Ginger in the episode is 'write your poem about me!'

Yeah, I remember this show but didn't watch it because of Ginger's friends. Didn't know why until now the few minutes in this episode. Dootie instantly says, "You should write about me" and when told about the competition is to be written in fiction, she adds "Maybe I learned to fly". As the series goes on, no doubt if this situation played again she would've tried to use this to gain popularity.

This video popped up in my algorithm and im truly happy that i clicked on it. I honestly can relate to this particular episode so much because it honestly happened to me when i released my first book. I released it on Amazon Kindle and they allow viewers to sample your book before they buy it. Alot of people read the sample and instantly judged me instead of enjoying a fantasy that was new and fresh. There were so many rumors and everyone thought my fantasy book was about me. I even had people like Courtney try to act like they were writing a book to get attention. It was one of the worse situations that I've been through. And although the rumors about me weren't about mental health, this episode really hit close to home. It feels good to be able to relate so much to something allowing me to see that someone understands 💖

Getting shoved into therapy since elementary school and even now in my 30s I get told I need therapy… this show was one I watched so many times growing up. Some people… are just darker than others, normally it naturally artistic people. Our brains are just wired differently. The only issue is… a lot of darker thought people do end up disappearing or offing themselves. It’s just how we are.

Oh god, i loved hello stranger, it made me feel so so seen. My dad wasn’t around. My mom really is my Lois, (I still call her Momster after all these years) and my mom would do everything in her power to protect me and my feelings. Especially when it came to my dad disappointing me emotionally. I told my mom at a very young age; “thank you for not trying to change me.” I always related to ginger because we are both sensitive and in-tuned with our/others emotions. And now 20 years has passed and I’m just bawling my eyes out as an adult watching this. I will always love this show. Very deeply.

29:01 They probably had a group session for boys. But boys and girls are often separated so they feel comfortable sharing. You may have forgotten how uncomfortable it was to share feelings as a teenager, let alone sharing them in front of other kids who might use it against you, or might be a crush.

My only annoyance with all this as a school psychologist is how it was handled. Yes, I would've absolutely brought Ginger in to touch base about the poem etc, but it should not have been blown up by staff or students. Definitely would've had a stern talking to those folks so that doesn't happen; there would be a high likelihood it was make things worse. Overall though the episode was handled well~ just sad the few times my progression is shown, it turns out like this. -.- Just found the channel and have been thoroughly enjoying it!!!
