@@AmieDeLalla imagine her later giving the mini plushies to her kids and grandkids 😊 I had mini plushie keycharms. Of course they were bought but I kept them longer than all the other plushies because small things are cute and they were my lucky charms
Over the years I've come to the conclusion crochet is 2 hobbies. 1 of them is actually crocheting things the other is acquiring all the pretty yarn and notions
Omg yes. I have these storage things that have about 4 drawers. I have 2 of these. All of the drawers are FILLED with yarn and I have another area in my room filled with even more yarn.
Lol I currently have 2 diaper boxes full of yarn, a duffle bag and another big box . Yeah she for is ok and I just got on the net to look for more yarn lol and I don’t sell anything, I make stuff for ppl and give them away lol
You remind me soo much of my wild, young-acting texan Memaw, it's so comforting to watch your videos! As someone with ADHD, you give off relatable vibes
Crafting rules: 1) We don’t talk about our stashes. 2) We don’t stash shame. These are mental health tools that have the power to make us a little crazy at times. 💚
Thanks now I feel better about the 300 lbs of paper I have hoarded because it was pretty. I take it out and look at it every so often and that makes me happy.
@@chrishampton8532 Yup! That is, itself, a hobby! If you are taking it out and looking at it and enjoying it, THAT's your hobby and that's OK. THat's not hoarding, it's enjoying your collections. FWIW - look at all the expensive tools men (generally) like to acquire that they use once in twenty years (maybe). No shame in that game.
It makes sense to create a small version of your project. Some would call it a swatch gauge. I do that for my baby blankets and I still have some of them. Every so often I take them out and think about who I made them for. ❤️
My grandmother of 97 has kept record of everything she’s made since 1973. Now that she can’t do crafts anymore we look through her albums and revel in all the wonderful things she’s made. Please do keep track of it. It’s a treasure
How did your grandmother of 97 start? Did she take pictures from the very beginning (early 1920s?), draw diagrams or a combination? I’ve known how to crochet for decades, but I’m just now getting back into it after a 40-year hiatus where I spent more of my time sewing. Thank goodness we have smart phones. I have a file of all of my crochet projects. And now the latest iPhones allow you to put notes under the pictures. I’m so happy! I was having trouble keeping track of the size hooks I used for different projects, because I only have one set of ergonomic hooks. I also record the size of the yarn that I use in case I wanna make it again. But one day (I hope) I will print them all out and put them in an album. There’s just something about having a book to flip through and pass on to future crafters.😅😊❤
@@EH-tv7xq She started making detailed records in 73, when she started more original stuff as well as spinning and dying the yarn herself. She have volumes of yarn samples, incl. what they were dyed with, and a number she assigned to them, then she has swatches with information on what yarn, where it was from and what dyes she used, there's a sketch of the item and then she has a fotoalbum with pictures of the items on the person whom she giftet it to. I think a key element is that she did it along the way. Had she had to sit and look back she wouldn't have remembered just as detailed as these notes are. Uuuh! That's a good way to use that feature! Thank you for the idea^^
Don't worry that's true with most crafters! In fact my mom walked in on me organizing my yarn and said "Ohhh, Lord!". Then a few days later, we were talking on the phone, and she randomly said, "I have decided that if you buy any more yarn, I'm writing you out of my will. You have a problem!". I am 60% sure she was joking.😂😂😂
@@deannsimon9444 Lol, these "therapy" groups have several "code names" ... knit & natter, craft club, stitch & bitch, location knitters / crafters etc. The secret is using it / or at least allocating it to a project (& getting started) & having couple of wip for the left overs. I make squares with the bigger left overs & crochet mice with the smaller left overs, I donate these to my local rehoming shelter. (Many of my friends & colleagues have also received a mouse, when I hear they have adopted a cat / kitten)
Oh my GOD. That is the best and cutest idea, and I am literally picking a project right now. I'm gonna crochet gifts for everyone I know and make little tiny copies for myself.
Ah man, ya'll are feeding the monster inside her. Cruel, cruel people. (Ps. I thought it sounded cute too but I wouldn't want to feed the monster myself either so I'm not going to like this comment)
I just bought larger bins for my stash, and after I moved my yarn over I told my husband "look, I can now fit it in 2.5 bins instead of 4!" He was like, does that include all the yarn in vacuum bags under the bed?....ermmmmm 😅
How many ppl would love your beautiful crocheted blankets and also the minis for the little kids that cover their stuffed animals and dolls. My mother use to sew mini outfits for my Barbie dolls. Sweet memory for me. Elyse your brain is brilliant. And you are very witty!
I feel the same way. I have a habit of letting inspiration and motivation lead me to starting projects. Unfortunately, once the passion dies down, or a distraction appears, the project gets shelved until I can remember to finish it.
I have some of the most beautiful fabric that I purchased in East Berlin (before the wall came down). It has a delicately hand embroidered bottom on a silk fabric that’s meant to be made into a long skirt. We were stationed in West Germany in the late 1970’s so this is very old materiel, carefully stored with tissue paper. I’ve never used it because I’m afraid to ruin it and I know I’ll never have such a gorgeous piece of fabric again. Now I’m 76, my eyes aren’t what they used to be, and I have arthritic hands that make the precise tiny stitches I was known for impossible to pull off any longer. I had my chance for probably 45 years and I missed my shot. I don’t know why your yarn reminded me of that piece of fabric. It’s only one cut in a shelved closet full of pieces to make just about anything you’d like which I’ll probably not get around to either. But it’s the one I really have regrets about having used.
@@kathieboudreau129I think all sewists have that *one* piece of fabric in our stash we’re “saving” for something “really special”. And it never gets used because we’re afraid to cut into it and ruin it! I can go to town on all my yarns with wild abandon because I know if the project doesn’t work out I can just frog it. But fabric…once it’s cut, that’s it. It’s kind of terrifying when the fabric means a great deal to us.
Lap covers are small blankets for people in wheelchairs. Nursing homes and hospitals use these because long blankets get caught in the wheels. It is a shorter project, so you get results faster! 😊
@@katjaamyx2922same! I also get into a coaster kick sometimes where I'll just make little circle doilie things and then just toss them into a bag together when I'm done. They've never actually been used as coasters, I know I'm going to do something with them one day tho. That's the one reason why I keep them
Yeah, but then I have 8bzillion photos and who's really got the time to look at all that? Seriously, I'll be stuck looking for 2 years and unable to tear myself away. You don't know what you're saying!
😂 i love the emphasis added on those last 2 words, and the way I read that in my head made it so much funnier- but also, because I too have a serious problem (not yarn... nail products, acrylic pots - theyre fucking EVERYWHERE!!!! AND I WANT MORE! Gotta collect em all, right? 🥺)
My husband told me I have too much yarn. I vehemently disagreed. He said prove it. I said fine. So, I have been going from room to room getting my yarn out of my yarn stash locations, and putting them in a large tote. Tote is full to bursting. He said, 'See! You have too much yarn!' I took a picture and sent it in a group chat to his mother and aunt and all my crafting family members. All sent back confirmations that I, in fact, DID NOT have too much yarn. That there is NO SUCH THING as too much yarn. And threatened to send me more. 😅 He conceded, after I made a shirt saying 'It's not hoarding if it is yarn', that he was wrong. But we made the agreement that I need to use at least HALF of my yarn stash before I can buy more. 😅 lmao
I have this problem with scrapbooking supplies. I haven't scrapbooked since my daughter was born (9 years ago). When you gift things you make, always make sure the person you're gifting it to will appreciate and use it. It's hard to let go of something you worked so hard on, but knowing the person will enjoy it helps a LOT! I also like the idea someone said of making a big blanket out of the minis.
My grandma would crochet blankets in her recliner and my grandpa used to knit blankets in his recliner. She would make glorious tight crochet patterns of 2-3 colors each. My grandpa would make his simple striped patterned soft relaxed blankets out of my grandma’s yarn scraps. Those two would sit there for hours at night just working away on their blankets. ♥️
My Mom has been quilting for 45 years. Countless quilts, runners, Christmas Stockings , afghans… all so special. One year I went to my sister’s homes and took photos of everything she made. Took photos of the items she made over the 45 years and put them in a photo album for Mother’s Day. Now she’s 85 and can’t remember making everything, but it brings her joy to see everything she made knowing it is part of her legacy and her kids and grands love our treasures.
Quilts can last generations. My mom has the one that grandma made for my great grandma Nanny on her bed. They are precious and time consuming AF. Be greatful if you receive on... unless it was made to insult you, then F them! Quilts can say alot!
The solution is called a sampler quilt. Make all the mini versions. Save the mini versions up. When you have enough mini's, crochet them together with pretty borders as a full size sampler quilt.
😂lmao. I thought it was just me, with the minis..we think too😮 much. Totally agree with $$ pretty yarn. I have bernat blanket yarn, and it's Summer!! I already did a gorgeous summer blanket, 55x48 in.😅
My dear, sweet, lovely @elysemyers, as an old lady version of you, I feel this in my soul. Instead of minis, my solution is to keep a container with yarn tails I've snipped after weaving in of things that I've made and gifted. Right now, it's a glass/brass lantern up on my shelf above my desk. I can look at my collection and remember all my finished objects. Love you and your crazy brain! You validate me and my crazy brain! ❤
I've never heard of someone else doing this. But I do the same thing! I find that so cool how two complete strangers have been doing the exact same thing c:
I had neighbor with same "mini" issue😂 she ended up sewing them all together and created like 4 really beautifully cool couch blankets! Awesome gifts. She let each person pick the one they'd like to keep and she kept the last one. It became a regular "mini" thing😅😂
I just found her this page and I love how she explains her obsession with yarn and yarn projects. She is saying everything I think and feel into words! I am now subscribed and a fan. ❤
Lmaooo this is a great explanation of exactly what’s been happening to me..I’ve reached the hoarding phase and never finishing projects phase and I’m like 3 months in 😂
This is why we have the term SABLE (stash acquired beyond life expectancy). I am in that category. I love the sensory experience of the yarn itself so much, it's a hobby in itself. Also, I love you, Elyse.
This is exactly why I make mini crochet patterns! I cannot sit for more than an hour or 2 crocheting the same thing, and I want to be DONE with it by the time the movie is over! I have so many mini triceratops now it’s insane but ALSO have all my Xmas gifts done for everyone in the entire neighborhood now!!
I want to click on your channel but I can't go there again though if i was able to finish without having to do allnighters i could actually be successful this time but i am broke...uh oh i think i am going to click see you soon lmao
Mine is in a whole bunch of drawers in my 12 drawer organizer (3 of which have a purpose and are staying that purpose and 1 that’s empty rn but will soon be full) and also has spread to a basket on my desk
Every crafter has a huge stash...no shame! You're helping the economy when you purchase yarn AND think of THIS: without hoarders there would be no pickers to find treasures (future antiques & archeology)! So you're really part of the great crafting- thrifting-antique-archeology pipeline!🎉❤
And when I go into a craft store I have to "check out the yarn" and 'I promise I won't take long" meanwhile 2 hours later I'm still there smiling and dreaming of playing with the yarn
I use to work at Michael’s and restocking the yarn was always such a mountain to climb because it would always come undone and you would have to somehow have to make it look shopable again. 🤣💀⚰️
Girl you just don't know the amount of joy i get just by listening you talk about literally anything... Love you and i think it's a great idea to have mini versions of each piece you crochet---->>>pure genius
Lol my newest friend just got into crocheting again but has major adhd and so quickly put it to the side and started something else. She noticed I have that problem too. But boy oh boy. She didn't know the extent. I recently got all my crafting totes back... *clears throat* 3 totes of yarn, with all the yarn in their own canvas/tote bag with partially finished projects lol, a box of random fabrics (gifted to me and I already know what to do with it. I'm very excited about that one), a shoe box of only felt (also gifted and I have an idea for all that too), a tote of paints, brushes, canvases, jars, and finished canvas pieces, my sewing kit with various cross stitching threads, a basket of needle work hoops, and finally the 3 blankets I have been working on for the past 3 months, made of only scrap yarns. These were the only ones she was aware of. I think I overwhelmed her when I showed her everything 😅 but now she's excited to get back to crocheting again lol I also have a sewing machine, but my place is too small and I have nowhere I can set it up to use right now. I miss it☹️
It's an addiction! I found this adorable pumpkin pattern and just HAD to make a blanket out of it. Now I'm half way through the blanket and realizing that I don't actually want it, I just wanted to try it........
I started crocheting only 2 months ago. I bought a woobles kit and I’ve bough 1-2 every week since. On top of every single color of yarn (sometimes more than 1) I have multiple books with patterns. And my entire Google search and bookmark pages are patterns lol I seriously don’t think ppl who don’t crochet know how incredibly addicting it is. I have so many amigurumis that I literally don’t have anywhere to put them. It’s time I start a bigger project lol
You are hilarious, love your logic of non - logic brain chatter , I thought I was the only one who goes through such back and forth brain banter. Now I know iam not alone. Warms my heart and gives me permission to be creative on all levels
I used to work in a nursing home with a veterans and if you make lap blankets enough to cover your lap in your legs then you can donate them there to a nursing home for the residents at Christmas time they always love to see the different colors
@@judyhyland499 I saw on a RU-vid channel that the new thing is braiding plastic bags together and making a pad for the homeless or shelters to use does anybody know anybody that's doing that
honestly i love this idea so much. as a person who wants to sell my art but yet does becomes very attached to my pieces, it gave me the idea to do exactly that, a mini painting as the keepsake and sell the bigger version/ specific size print and/or canvas that’s requested etc. idk if that makes sense but gosh dang thankful you posted this ! !
Yo same. Im currently finishing a winter blanket (so imagine the fluffiest yarn) and my entire room is floor to ceiling covered in yarn bc i always think "ill buy two bc ill eventually use it" 😂❤
Elyse you inspired me to knit again. I started knitting after I was in the hospital for mental health. But of course people wanted to buy it. And my mom was so critical of the hats I made her that I stopped knitting completely for 5 years. And then I seen your video. And I've been set free from depression, praise God, and when I seen your video about knitting I remembered how much I loved it. So now I'm just doing it cause I love it. Thank you so much ❤.
I made my grandmother a shawl. I spent hours on it, I spent a lot of money on the yarn, I bought pattern that I spent hours looking for. Then I shipped it to her and.. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. She said thanks for the package. Never again. It actually made me take a several year long break from knitting altogether and I threw away the leftover pretty yarn.
This is why if i make something for someone and i get radio silence, im not making that person ANYTHING ELSE again. Hobbies take time, money and effort and crocheting/knitting is truly a labour of love if you're not getting payed. The only person allowed to waste my time and be overly critical of the fruits of my hobbies are me! 🤷🏽
Highly relatable! I have your same issues with adhd and ocd and I bought so much yarn and got into crocheting, my thing is I can’t finish any projects. I get all these great ideas, start them and get bored. But I have a two huge bags full of yarn under my bed and one in the closet. They have to be stored in something with a zipper that the cats can’t get into cause my cat ate yarn once cause I left it out and it was a $4,000 vet bill 💀😀
@christykaderman6484 no. That's not the problem, but thank you for the help. My problem is literally the finishing, almost like I have a pathological avoidance of it.
Your blanket pattern is inspirational and I 'think' I will use your soft ripple pattern to use up. Am needing to get over my obsession of having all of my biankets perfectly squared.
Oh holy crap Elyse. Thank you. I was having a terrible day all day today for just no reason and I was finally just scrolling through youtube shorts to try to get out of my head and here you are... Thanks for being cool and non-confrontational. Your videos are fun and lighthearted and so relatable.
everytime i watch your shorts i see me in you, partly, but enough to understand how you feel and secondly i always think "how can somebody be so f*ing happy and on the same time so annoyed and frustrated with herself?" and i say that, knowingly that i've got adhd. I FEEL THAT TOO!
