Hester was just a girl in the village school, when one day a pretty young lady came in to ask the schoolmistress if there was any scholar there who could work as a nursemaid. Hester was very proud when she was called up and described as a steady honest girl, with poor but respectable parents, and good at her needlework. She was soon employed and settled at the parsonage, just in time before the young lady’s baby was born, a girl who became known as Miss Rosamond. Her father was a hard working young curate in a large scattered parish over the Westmoreland Fells, and her mother a granddaughter of Lord Furnivall in Northumberland. Sadly, when little Rosamond was four or five, both of her parents died within a fortnight. Her father contracted a fever after one of his long rides, and her mother passed soon after/ following the birth of a stillborn baby. She had asked Hester on her death-bed never to leave Rosamond, which Hester was happy to do as she was already devoted to the little girl.

You read these ghost stories so well -- you get me anxious to know what happened next. One of my favorite books was The Oxford Book of English Ghost Stories. There's a couple of ones in there I wish you would read. I'll post the exact titles and authors as soon as I can find them.

When I was 42 I fell down the stairs at home, an ambulance was called by the time it got to me I had stopped breathing, the paramedic a man in his 20s managed to get me breathing again after nearly 5 minutes, they rushed me into hospital and X-rayed me then left me in a cubicle, I was on my own flat on my back and in agony after 35 minutes, I heard someone walking to my side, it was a older nurse, I would say in her 60s, she smiled at me and said there’s a doctor looking at your X-ray now, it’s alright I will find someone for you, would you like a cup of tea with a straw, yes please I said I’m really thirsty, as she walked away towards the door I noticed she was a wearing a matron’s uniform I couldn’t watch her all the way to the door because of the position of the bed so I didn’t see her actually leave, another 40 minutes went by and a young doctor came through the door into the room and told me that I had Osteoporosis in my spine and that the fall had caused a compression injury (but that’s another story) he said you can go home they will take you by ambulance, I thanked him and asked him to thank the older nurse in the matron uniform but I wouldn’t be needing that cup of tea after all, he looked confused and said no one wears uniform anymore they all wear scrubs now, a nurse came in and asked what we were talking about he told her about it, she went white as a sheet and said don’t be silly then run out of the room. A few weeks later I was talking to my neighbour who was a consultant in the same hospital and she laughed and said that was the matron who worked there in the 60s quite a few patients have seen her over the years (this is not all of the incident )👍🏻

Given your Australian accent, and that of your fellow narrator, and the quantity of stories which are of British origin, I wonder whether you are Australian expats living in the UK. Whatever the case, your voices are very well suited to this content. Thanks for yet another intriguing tale.

@@Laugh_73 They speak with more of a proper or ‘educated’ Australian accent, rather than the coarse stereotypical ‘ocker’ accent that most foreigners expect. The classier accents of Australians and New Zealanders can be harder to distinguish, but the rough versions are unmistakable. P.S. There’s no strict rule concerning the class of accent in Australia, as some of the most educated people I know speak with a rough accent, and individuals with very little education occasionally sound far more refined than one would expect. One’s environment obviously plays a large role, though there are plenty of exceptions.
