As a Chinese born in Heibei Province, this is a typical way how we treat our guests. We offer a ton of drinks and be humble and sharing all the time. Drinking is our culture and an important way of socializing. Having said that, we are seeing this kind of old school socializing less and less. People nowadays are getting more and more individualized. Someday we will probably become more and more like New Yorkers.

I've spent five years learning about China and this should be compulsory education for the West. Chinese people are really humble and generous and kind and fun to be around. It's unfortunate that our governments are rarely a reflection of the very best we have to offer.

In Chinese culture, the only time it's appropriate for a man to get on their knees is when they're in front of their elders (parents or grandparents) or in the old days, the emperor. Kowtowing basically means getting rid of your dignity.
