SO happy to see Luo Xiao Hei being talked about, that movie is basically therapy for the eyes

One of favourite animated movies of this/last year! Though I'd say this is less a Chinese Ghibli film and more a Chinese Into-the-Spiderverse, with the sakuga and story structure

This web series and the recent film is criminally underated and needs more attention.

5:30 The spite that Feng Xi holds is still understandable. The freedom that the Elfin enjoyed before humans took over everything is very similar to the state of Native Americans. Native Americans are given rights within society and have land on the reserves, but it's nothing compared to the freedom they previously enjoyed before European foreigners arrived and took over the continent. The Guild in Legend of Hei is a similar situation. It's their attempt to integrate Elfins within human society, but why do Elfins need to hide and integrate when the humans were the invaders in the first place? Lastly, Elfin are not all impacted the same by human intrusion. Some can integrate into human society better than others. But Feng Xi is a wood sprite---he feels and breaths the forests that humanity cuts down and the ecosystems they destroy. I can understand why his hatred is more significant than other Elfin, why he would turn to terrorism to achieve his goals, and why he refused to surrender even when he lost at the end. The fact that there is no clear villain is what I really liked about the movie. What made Feng Xi's death so bittersweet is that it never addressed the underlying problem---the rapid and destructive growth of human society that drives the Elfin out or into hiding.

Fun fact, in the web series,voice actor ShanXin voice 12 character include :Hei, Bai, Bai's brother etc.

Finally! Please, I want more people to know about this movie, because i'm in love with it, and I want all of the world to know it. As an artist, rarely (only 5 times through my entire life) I cry when see a stunningly beautiful things. With this movie it wasn't just one time - for half of an hour my eyes were wet and something near 8 times I have busted to tears without shame so much I had to pouse the movie because I couldn't see anything

There's a season 2 of All Saints Street already actually. There's a couple episodes translated on RU-vid already by some independent fans. Also for other great Chinese animation series you could try Mo Dao Zu Shi and Tian Guan Ci Fu both having the main characters as canonically gay. Well, at least for the novels since they're not even finished yet and animation tends to shy away from the more sexual side of their source materials like novels and comics.

Chinese anime is killing it! This and Fog Hill of Five Elements have amazing art styles and action scenes. This is like Ghibli x Dragon ball!

Literally STOP comparing EVERY cutesy movie to Ghibli it is mighty annoying at this point.

The film happened 4 years earlier than the TV series. For the story about Lao Jun, happened many hundred years ago, see manga Lan Xi Zhen.

The story behind Hei reminds me of the making of the movie Penguin Highway. That movie was made by a first time Animation director and was a RU-vidr for many years.

While the animation can be a little too fast in places I really respect the energy and the spectacle that this movie oozes. It is really amazing coming from an independent studio. Also pretty cool of you to give a shout out to the 2019 NeZha. That movie was EPIC and EFFECTIVE despite the somewhat simplistic story. Splendid video mate 😊👍

Love to see you reference Wan Sheng Jie (All Saints Street) near the end. I saw almost no one talking about it while it was airing, but it's easily my favorite comedy anime(?) of last spring. Also, 9:58 the 2nd season is airing right now, man.

The film does has the Ghibli vibe. But the movie has its own unique charm 🥰 Highly recommend to anyone who enjoy watching feel-good fantasy animation with a hint of deep wisdom ❤

this is a r;y good video analyzing one of the most deserving movies and series of all time, but the way you pronounce some of the names , specifically wu xian, takes me the fuck OUT , like u pronounce it different every time??? I would look into it more if I were you and I recommend just practicing So you give the culture its due respect. also in terms of your criticism of feng xi being too unsympathetic, I have to disagree. as a person of color I understood perfectly his point of view being unwilling to join the guild. It’s not the same thing. I completely understand not wanting to assimilate to a culture you never asked for and was literally forced upon you, while your own culture and way of life you simply have to suppress and leave behind and in some ways act like it’s less civilized, less important and less beautiful and rich and intelligent than the culture of your colonizer. So, feng xi’s point of view is a lot more nuanced than you give credit for, althoigh I agree that the movie presented him slightly too villainously (being willing to hurt other yaojing). Though I don’t blame you for not getting that on your own because that’s not a perspective you necessarily have as a white .....and British.....person.

I don't know why, but I got pretty confused with the way you explained this. Like, I felt you dived right into this without enough context. Is Legend of Hei about the cat at the beginning? I see many different styles of animation, characters/humans, etc., so I'm wondering if this is the web series, a bunch of different movies or series. I also found it hard to understand you at times for some reason. It felt kind of low or unclear. I'm not sure. I think it would have been better if you had gone over the plot and characters of this movie and clearly labeled what was the web series and what was the movie. I wasn't sure what company was being compared to Ghibli either or its history, or if this film is a big improvement or something. Basically, why are we talking about this film?

What would it take for people to stop calling every other animation the next "Ghibli". It's so degrading and disrespectful as an animator as if you'll never make good art unless you reference and compare yourself with this one single company. It's so frustrating to be honest.

Please check out Heaven Official's Blessing a.k.a Tian Guan Ci Fu, I know it's BL genre(not sure if they'll censor that part considered it's a Chinese show), but the animation is visually stunning for an animated web series, many are calling it God tier.

I don’t know. Ghibli is more about the core for me. I mean HEI is good and all, but it feels shallow a bit to me... the actions, the graphics are nice and all but...it just feels different. I mean commercially they are doing a great job, but culture wise they are just not quiet in the level of ghibli.
