As someone who is a child of older parents, the generation gap is a real thing. However, that is not an excuse for the way Chris's parents acted. I hope no one looks at this and thinks all older parents are like that. There are people who need to learn that autism is not a reason to demonize someone and it is not something that goes away. Does this excuse his actions? NO.

@@issabeganovic8822 true. Even if you had a fucked up childhood and/or disability, you can do things to improve your value to others and yourself like get therapy from someone who's honest with you about the things you're in denial about or repress. But some ppl, like those who were institutionalized during their childhoods and were emotionally deprived of empathy and dedication (particularly during the brain's formative years between birth and age 5), are just so screwed up bc they weren't taught how to be "human" in there and never learned how to be a social creature which we instinctively are so if we never had our emotional needs met, physical needs too, then that part of our brain dies as it wasn't built during infancy. That's like a brain injury you know? Dark stuff but it unfortunately happens to unwanted, unloved, discarded children. Anywho, if you possess the ability to change or improve your circumstances then there's no excuse to be a victim after you become aware of it although I realize it's complex, but ultimately you can do it if you pursue it diligently and effectively.

I watch this as an autistic adult who already knows the horrors Chrischan has enacted. I'm angry at the people that surrounded this child. This is the single-most glaring example of someone who never experienced any kind of genuine support throughout their entire childhood. The friends were staged, the grades were staged, Bob and Barb's support was shallow. No social education during early development, no special education, no redirection of unhealthy habits, head filled with nasty rhetoric. Not a drop of real, genuine help to be seen. Every adult in their life (and some of the kids) failed to support a disabled kid who was supremely creative and full of potential. There is a timeline, somewhere, where ChrisChan got given every ability to turn out well-adjusted (or at least semi-adjusted like myself) and able to handle the cruelty of the internet and real life. From there, it spiralled into some fucked up places that can't be pinned on ChrisChan's childhood, but I'm sure we can all admit that they didn't get given a promising start. My parents weren't very knowledgeable about autism but they tried to teach me manners, morals, and socialisation from a young age and that little bit of effort made such a big difference. "Determination" and "tolerance" were my favourite word cards. Even when some things they did (like giving stickers for good behaviour) didn't work and when they took out their frustration on me, the attempts to support me mattered in the long run. It doesn't take much to teach a kid a simple idea, even kids with disabilities.

You know, I can't help but find Chris Chan to be like the Karloff Frankenstein monster. Both had special needs due to their neuroatypical brains yet were mistreated. They both had good hearts but without being taught properly, they caused disasters (like when the monster accidentally drowned a girl who he thought would float). In the end, they both lived miserable Iives that could have been avoided had they got the treatment they needed. You understand what I mean?

Same. I have ASD and I used to have a friend that was also on the spectrum and the differences between us were VASTLY different Her mom is like Chrises. Karened her way to not make my friend get homework, didn't make her clean up or take care of basic hygiene or even gain simple life skills. Shes 19 and doesn't know how to hold a proper convo unless its about HER and her OCs. I feel guilt tho. I wanted to help so bad but when I did she shamelessly threw tantrums in public, even if I told her "hey, you need to brush ur teeth, something is rotting in there and ur gums bleed when u talk" Or that she needs to start drinking more water bc she kept saying her right side was hurting or that she needed to start being more active bc she can't walk for more than maybe 10 minutes and feel terrible (keep in mind, she is skinny too) (Telling her she is probably starting an infection) She never wanted to listen to stuff she probably already knew. Sometimes I still wanna yell at her (unstable) mother for not doing the basics on taking care of her daughter and me seeing her kill herself slowly. I wanna dee her dream come true of having at least two kids and overall, a happy family. But she doesn't even know how to clean herself or her beloved animals (which are all infested with fleas and her house smells of cat shit and piss) or her own dang room. It makes me angry how ppl can have all the outlets even HANDED to them in the world and still have it refused and end up like a shel of the potential they could have been if they grew up in even a slightly better home.

Chris Chan really didn’t get any guidance at all. It’s so strange that as a child, Chris is articulate, polite, trying to hold eye contact, etc… which is so strange compared to Chris as a teenager and adult. Not saying that Chris Chan would have been an extraordinary human being (because let’s be honest, Chris’ devil is sexual and the strong vice for sex made them do terrible things and hurt many people besides Chris’ mom), but Chris would at least be able to function at a job. Heck, Chris might have their own home (despite the jokes about hygiene, Chris’ areas of the house are sadly the most clean and livable), and a circle of friends that would fulfill some Chris’ desires for companionship.

In a village type setting, even if have learning disabilities, schizophrenia, etc., you can still be a part of the village social life, handle and contribute with a job like gathering and selling wood for cooking, etc. In modern life, even entry fast food jobs like fast food are hugely time pressured, with lots of multi-tasking and social interactions that even almost functional people find too difficult, leading to them often being isolated.

It's actually quite sad; especially potent to see Chris as a little boy. I understand who he is and what he has become, but it brings tears to my eyes to see. At that age we are all so innocent, with dreams and full lives ahead of us. It's heartbreaking to see such a happy, curious and vibrant child knowing what would later become of him. Knowing this information about his childhood without consideration of who he his currently - the letter from his father, being locked under the house, showing such creativity, potential, and keenness to make his own computer games at the age of 6 while being unable to speak, seeing him with his GameBoy. It's sad, in a bizarre way and I can't quite explain it. He could have had a much different story.

His home is gonna be gone when he gets out. Extended members of his family have no choice but to take care of his elderly mother who might not even have that much life left in her. It’s best that for the rest of his life he isn’t given access to the public for his own mental sake. His enablers are just as crazy as him and he is to stupid an deluded to understand that he is not famous for his artistic abilities or his talent. He does not have fans, he has people that laugh at him. Anyone who considered helping him are never gonna try again after what he has done. He can’t take care of himself and other people can’t help him. He is a danger to himself and others. A friend of my son's (15) is showing worrying signs of heading in a similar direction. He is 'special', is autistic and his parents indulge him as if he is a little prince. He has always been hugely materially spoiled, they insisted on his being in mainstream education, despite his frequently erratic and disruptive classroom behaviour. His 'artistic soul' constantly indulged by parents and teachers alike. Whilst this might have been 'cute' as a 5 year old, it is sinister as a 15 year old and in adulthood will be a major problem. As a parent myself I fully understand the need to protect your child and the desire shelter them as much as possible, however, being 'kind' means that sometimes you have to be strict, sometimes you have to say no, sometimes you have to challenge the tantrum and sometimes you have to remove the shelter. Because what is far, far less kind is sending the child into adulthood without the tools to be able to cope, even with his autism, in the world which is a hard, harsh place. Chris Chan is a product of this. Probably held together whilst his father was around to provide and protect but hopelessly exposed now. Unfortunately, he is a product of his parents who, in a wrong headed sense of kindness, resulted in created a monster. However, there is no manual for parenting, it is hard and it is easy to judge until you have been a parent yourself. I cannot help but draw similarities with Dragonlord in Germany, Dankula has a great 3 part series on that particular form of 21st C 'Bedlam Visit' (Bedlam Visit- a Sunday afternoon pastime in between 15th and mid 19th C London where people would visit the Lunatic Asylum of St Bethlehem (Bedlam) and for a few pennies could amuse themselves by laughing at the antis of the lunatics within.)

One quirk of ASD is lack of proper volume control. We can speak way too loud or way too quiet at the wrong times. Thankfully my mom spent countless hours late at night working with me and getting me to talk and write and practice until it became second nature. Chris is a morality tale for Aspies and others like us. A warning of the responsibility the infinity spectrum truly is as a parent. About a month ago my son was born. And I wonder every day how many hours I may have to spend with him knowing that he could be like me. I’m just thankful when I look at him that I know between me and my wonderful wife that kid has come to a good home. Having dealt with similar problems growing up to what Chris went through and coming out the other side with a damn near perfect life, I am thankful for the countless hours my mother put forward all of the sleepless nights, and I know for a fact that I am willing to do the same for my son even more so having ASD myself. It’s just sometimes I forget people like Chris even exist and it’s terrifying to see how much this disorder can demolish a person if left unchecked.

I remember the first time I heard of Chris-Chan, I was a junior in high school in my Programming class, when a friend told me about him (this was before her transition, when she still went by Christian). He referred to Chris as "The Apex of Autism" (While I never asked him directly, I got the impression that moment that he didn't really like autistic folk, but the way I acted back in those days must have given him the impression that I wasn't autistic (I have ADD, ADHD, and Asperger's (now merged with the rest of the autism spectrum)). He also showed me critikal for the first time.). After watching this, I realized that I share a similar childhood to Chris. I was also raised by TV and video games, although the coolest thing I ever "won" was a McDonald's toy of Tak and the Power of Juju from Ronald McDonald himself (he came to our school one day for no particular reason that I remember), and I never got to be christened by one of Freddy Fazbear's cousins. But in terms of education, I was also put on the "regular track", and as a result, became a social outcast who only ever had one best friend at a time, only changing when they left school. After 9th grade, my parents decided to move to the US from my homeland of Puerto Rico, where I was both born and had lived at all my life. I was incredibly afraid to go to high school because not only would I have to start back from square one, I would also have to deal with what I thought at the time would be a stereotypical high school experience, where I was the bottom rung. Thankfully, those also happened to be the best years of my life because I had a small army of friends (one of which is my official IRL Best Friend to this day), no bullies, a school psychologist I could talk to when I had both life and school problems, and some of the best teachers I could have ever hoped to be a student of. And that's where the similarities end, I studied at Full Sail Online for a Bachelor's in Game Design and graduated in October 2021 (future proofing). It's insane to think that the only event that stood between me and being another apex was a night locked in a closet all alone.

I honestly don’t feel bad for Bob in this situation. It wasn’t just a collection, it was a hoard. The entire thing took up a whole room in the house. Those stamps were more of a burden than anything. Plus, it’s pretty entitled to force someone to keep your junk after you’re dead. Your collections are for you. Nobody else cares about them and you can’t expect anyone else to, as if you’re so great that everyone needs to appreciate the things you deem worthy. My grandfather gifted me his coin collection when he died. I was 11 years old at the time. He knew those coins would hold no value to me, so he told my father he wanted me to sell the collection and get something I would enjoy. That’s exactly what I did. He was still able to give me something posthumously without burdening me with something I wouldn’t pay attention to and most likely store away. I won’t even talk about Bob being abusive. That’s a different can of worms. Of everything Chris has done, selling a bunch of useless stamps is not a bad thing at all. It’s better to sell the collection to people who will actually appreciate them instead of keeping them in one space, never to be looked at again.

Are these corrections of GFM or corrections of Chris Chan's recounting of events?

this story (the heartbreaking tragedy and waking nightmare of his existence) has always felt relatable and totally unrelatable in equal measure. I just can't put it into words, it's like we're all fascinated by a documented worst case scenario that somehow feels... like I could have also been totally ruined by a bad family, bad genetic hand, and bad intentions from a legion of internet people

Geez, having mental health issues in early 2000s and even today, sucks ass... I blame the terrible parenting, terrible teachers, and other people for being terrible... I often find myself having to tuck away my own mental issues. Not sure if anyone knows what its like to have to hide away your real self simply because "Society has to be pleased"....

That sheet of paper with "The dimensional merge is happening now(!)" written on it multiple times looks pretty ominous with the benefit of hindsight. Especially since Chris's letters from jail have gotten progressively more unhinged, particularly the last letter he wrote prior to his being psychiatrically evaluated in Western State Hospital.

@@Brandonhayhew Yup, for all his obnoxious hipster posturing, I have nothing against Cole. I see him as a guy who escaped and is doing fine for himself against the odds. He's married, a musician and his wife owns a bar / microbrewery. I like to think his obnoxious hipster-ness is a persona or exaggeration because I doubt his wife would marry him otherwise. Hearing Chris throw a tantrum at 18 for not getting a more impressive award at his graduation gave me second-hand embarrasment. I remember feeling similarly cheated when I didn't get recognised in a school contest and needed a teacher to console me. ...Only difference was I was *8.* Even then I realised I was being selfish by getting so upset at not getting a big prize.

its sad that chris chan spent his 40th birthday in prison for something unspeakable. Even though he had chances to change his path yet he still stayed on the same path, i know that's mostly his fault but i feel like so many people (especially his parents) let him down, he showed so many signs of being delusional and now he's to a point of no return.

Yeah like. When I first found out about CC through Down the Rabbit Hole it provoked a realization how a lot of early meme culture was the internet finding vulnerable people unironically producing art and goad them into crisis. That's not to say she's not responsible for some of the reprehensible shit she's done. Especially the shit she's awaiting trial for. However you have to wonder how much of Chris' degradation was because of internet pressure.

I was really involved in the Christory community before and a little bit after the incest incident. The entire thing was like watching a car crash in slow motion.
