Apparently it was the Germans that initiated the truce, and before anyone knew it, soldiers of both sides were out on no man's land, playing football.

@@druidkhan6066 yeah they did, but no one knows who that first guy was, saw somewhere some British officer saying about one of his brigade going over the top, but no name or anything is given. and also the german didn't really want the truce to end, even after Christmas, some of them would just sit on top of the trenches and sing, despites the warning from the british they refused to get down, and the brits were like "well we can't just shoot them in cold blood like that" so the truce continued for awhile, and they actually tried a bunch more times, on easter sunday and so on. but strict orders were given not to ever do that again. which is the following christmas' didn't have the same thing.

Exactly, British soldiers even gave huge respect & honor to a German Ace fighter pilot. His name was Werner Voss. There’s a little documentary of him & his dogfights with british planes on RU-vid. Check it out, very interesting.

I don’t think a lot of people realize that WWI was the first kind of modern war which is what made it so terrifying for the soldiers. Last major war they had was fought with muskets

@@emorynguyen1583 Not quite. They had bolt action rifles, but they still fought in the Napoleonic styles of war, big formations with bright colored uniforms, cavalry charges and cannonades. If I recall, the last major war the "Germans" fought was Schleswig-Holstein.

Lord Alkair I said the last MAJOR war, and that’s exactly what I was saying. WWI was the first war kind of modern war. The veterans from the Napoleonic wars and American civil wars would’ve been the grandfathers of the men who would fight in WWI. They grow up with this idea of what war is like which is an adventure and full of pride. When the war started many children lied about their age because they wanted to join. the fighting, and recruiting officers being desperate often turned a blind eye. Like 500k in the UK alone were child soldiers. Of course no one realized what they were getting themselves into. This was the most major turning point in warfare. The first use of machine guns, very advanced artillery, tanks, and much more. At the beginning of the war didn’t even realize they that they were supposed to stop wearing bright color uniforms, or even wear helmets. The idea of wearing a helmet seemed almost primitive unless you were a cavalryman to protect yourself from falls and clashes with other cavalry. They realized they needed helmets because of the mass use of artillery which killed many not even with a direct hit but by sending debris at the enemy. The French wore blue and bright red uniforms almost identical to how they looked in the Franco-Prussian war and every military began fighting in the Napoleonic linear formations which were effective in the age of the musket, but not in this new age of warfare. I mean, WWI was a shock to the men who fought in it. No one was expecting it to be like this

Even then. All the soldiers weren't Nazis in WWII, they were normal men and boys.

I'm British and I realise it was nothing to do with it. I realise this is WW1 and the Nazi's had nothing to do with it. I think Americans don't realise and why should it matter?

Whilst I agree about it being sad confusing WWI with WWII, I'd be very careful about trying to exonerate the WWII era Wehrmacht. It is a dangerous myth to try and claim they were entirely distinct from the Nazis and not culpable for the holocaust.

My great great grandfather was an American soldier in the 175th. During WW1.

@@xWHITExEAGLEx Turned up 3 years after the war started, my Great grandfather was there from 1914 until he was killed at the Battle of Arras, 27th April 1917, buried at the British cemetery in Rolincourt France. RIP, JT Nicholson.

The events are not dramatised. This actually happened. But the truce lasted a lot longer than an hour. It went on for days. By all accounts they were in and out of each other's trenches and just having a high old time. When the news got back to the powers that be, they were told they would all be court martialed if they didn't get back to fighting but (and this is the good bit) they just fired over each other's heads!

Whisper Mason of course there is football riots it’s what comes with the sport some might say its traditional, take a look at hooligans in the 80s in the uk and Europe. As much as there is a lot of fighting there is also a lot of “togetherness” especially when it comes to national teams. That brings all clubs together to support one

nah it's more conscript armies that didn't really want to fight. The volunteers glorified war throughout the centuries.

I feel you, my grandmother passed about a week ago. It's tough having to deal with a loss like that because usually with grandparents they are always very sweet and understanding. Compared to a parent that can come off as being too harsh (especially as a teen). But try to remember the good times you had together. As long as you know they loved you and you feel they know you loved them you don't have to be too sad. They would want you to be happy and would feel bad if they saw you are currently sad because of them. It's okay to mourn, but your grandpa would want you to be happy when you think of him.

Unfortunately, human nature being what it is, someone else would most likely have risen in his place. Maybe someone more aryan, less crazy, more competent... Hitler did not form the Nazi party from scratch, it existed before him. The political climate at the time was ripe for that sort of leadership and it would have happened whether or not it was him. Had he been shot in WWI it could just have easily turned out worse.

@@mortisrat Yes i was aware of all you say. I was just playing a game i often play that of "what if" and as with every human being we can all have an influence on other peoples lives. The suggestion was Hitlers particular influence and what difference would it have made if Hitler had indeed been killed in WW1 .The possible scenarios are too vast to cosider.

It was an advert, so I would be very unlikely that it would have piles of corpses and gore.
