hi Ron, when I made my first cigar pen I had no clue the bushings were different sizes and i ended up having a lip of wood on the cap end and your video was very useful in helping me make a second cigar pen for my dad thank you, and i really like your workshop
Nice video! Thanks! I started turning pens a few weeks ago. Finished 20 pens! Loving it! Addictive. I have mainly done Sierra, J. Gentleman, Streamline and slimline pens! I just ordered a Cigar pen Kit after watching this video!
Thanks for sharing. Setting up the camera and everything can be a pain for sure. Thanks for taking the time to show your process and your shop, your videos are very enjoyable.
Thanks Ron for the video. You gave some good tips in this video. I typically don't like Oak, but that pen turned out pretty. I'd like to have some figured maple blanks and turn those.
Thankyou Ron,for a very clear and informative video.I've just bought my first cigar pen kits, and they had no instructions,so had to find a video on RU-vid,and yours is the best! You've now got a new subscriber!Cheers,Keith. (It's us Brits that say Cheers) :)
Hi Keith, Thanks for watching. Hope this helps. On this webpage (link below), about half way down, you will see in blue text "Instr". Have fun :) www.leevalley.com/en/hardware/page.aspx?p=53435&cat=1,330,43243,53758
Hi Ron. Good video. Just an observation, you have a lathe. So why didn't you sand your brass tubes mounted on the lathe? It is far quicker and it works for me. I usually turn batches of 16 pens at a time.
Hi Ron, I am a beginner, but I'm having a few problems with bits of wood splintering near the end of the barrels, do you think this could be the timber or maybe I'm too aggressive! I noticed you used the scraper, I use the roughing gouge until about halfway then the skew and use it as a scraper. Any thoughts on those tools, please I'm desperate and running out of timber ha ha. Cheers Sean
Hi Sean, I use a very sharp scraper more than 90% of the time. I must emphasize the word "sharp". A dull tool will cause tear-out or splinters. Thanks for watching :)
Ron Calverley hi Ron, maybe that's what I'm doing wrong, as I stated previously I am very new to this! Thanks, your opinion is much appreciated. I'm going to give Walnut a go. Cheers, Sean
I've only seen photos of the Cuban Rhodium Kit. My uneducated guess is that instead of chrome plating, rhodium is used. They appear the same to me. By the way, I like and use that style a lot.
Good morning Ron ! Would you know were I can find a video on turning a Concava style pen kit made by Penstate Industries ! The top part of the pen is turned a little different than the normal types I have turned ? Have a good weekend ! 👍
The closest I've ever got to that was when I turned a slimline down to the place where it was a little bit convexed ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Emr0nl-D6RA.html
Hi Ron. nice music towards the end! is there any particular way that you set up the vise for drilling out the pen blanks? You wouldn't have to be far out to caise a problem. And yes...cheers! lol.
I've tried several different things. I would like to have a pen like yours you make but i dont have the knowledge neither the equipment to make one for myself do you sell the ones you make if so how can i order one ? Thanks sir
I am honored that you like my pens so much that you are asking to buy one. However, I do not sell anything I make. I make things in my workshop just for the pleasure of tinkering around. Thank you for watching and commenting 😊
Although it looks nice and the video done well it is way too fat to be a practical writing instrument. Not sure who actually writes with something of this girth without hand fatigue.
Yes Joe. You are right on that. Most of my pen are way too fat. For me it's all about the wood and I tend to forget that possibly someone may actually want to write with these pens. If you think those were bad, take a look at the one I just did yesterday. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4yrGTi3lPyg.html
