Internet videos are criminally under-appreciated. There's just as much passion in some five-minute viral hits as there is in some big-budget movies. Let's give weird Internet videos credit where credit is due and explore the cinematic artistry beneath their surface.

Fun fact: many of these weird Internet video creators have brought their skills to conventional television: - The director of "My Spoon is Too Big" (actually an Academy-Award nominated short titled "Rejected") directed the opening of a Simpsons episode (Don Hertzfeldt) - Co-animator of "Story From North America" wrote and directed an episode of Adventure Time (Kirsten Lepore) - New episodes of "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared" will be airing on Channel 4 in the UK as a television series

Actually, the first episode of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared is just bringing to light how hard it is to teach creativity. As the creators have said in a 2011 interview; "Creativity is almost always associated with progress and healthy positive expression but in actual fact you can get creative with a hammer and a cowpat. I don’t think we aimed to make a “comment” on creativity, but we wanted to make light of how creativity and self-expression is basically something very difficult to teach." It wasn't even meant to be a comment on childrens programming and the media, as they said in that same interview; "It’s hard to make a film with Muppet-style puppets without referencing kids’ shows, but we knew that we weren’t trying to make a deliberate spoof, and that’s why we had to make it very weird." So yes, it is just "weird for the sake of it". The media theory is just that, a theory that the audience came up with and popularized. It should have at least been referred to as such in this video, instead of saying that that's what it *is* about, and that that *is* what the message is.

As an artist, the biggest thing I love about weird media is that it's created by artists or people who want to break rules! So there's MORE thought into it, not just simple "shock value" while there is a lot of that, but some of the most weird media holds a lot of information for our brains to absorb in a fun way~~ And esp from my days as a studio animator, I can very much say that sometimes the curtains are blue for both depression and because it looked good for the scene haha Subdueing expectations via sillyness visuals with a hint of deep thought is my favorite kind of media, and THAT'S why I still love doing art after so many hardships in life.

And then when a show actually works to present children new ideas in innovative and entertaining ways it gets attacked as "brain rotting". As a kid I was told about ridiculous articles saying Spongebob made kids dumber when really it taught me so much about having self confidence, finding happiness in any situation, not giving in to toxic masculinity (that's like the entire point of the Spongebob Movie), and how to stand up for proper treatment in your workplace. All that while also being funnier than everything else on Nickelodeon at the time. It's a shame the later seasons without Stephen Hillenburg really weren't as good but those first 3 seasons and the first movie were really something special.

Coming from someone who was sincerely helped by Peterson's work many years ago, and has been trying to develop a more unbiased view of him unclouded by how influential he was in my late teens, this description of 12 More Rules finally made me understand his detractors in a way I've been resisting. Thank you for this video.

Haven’t followed JBP for a few years now. He always struck me as a very sincere person, not someone who would trade his values. I’m aware he has his critics, but what has he done lately to prove them right?
@unseasonedchicken7328
@unseasonedchicken7328 2 года назад
@@markhagan6675 Literally nothing- all he does is help people and do good but God forbid people separate his politics with what he does as a psychologist. People like this guy just want to believe they've found out some 'big secret' and are above everyone else when Peterson has literally done the exact opposite of "selling out". Man hasn't let any of his notoriety get to him which is pretty admirable if you ask me.
@partylikeits1066
@partylikeits1066 2 года назад
@@markhagan6675 There are many, many good criticisms to make of him, but one I would highlight in terms of his actual self help advice is that he is intensely anti-democratic. He discourages everyday people from involvement in civil and political life and suggests leaving decision making to distant authority figures who supposedly know better than you. Not only is this, imo, a politically disastarous position that encourages authoritarianism and erodes the democratic fabric of society, it is also just not good for people psychologically, it's an ultimately disempowering and isolating mentality. People are at their healthiest, happiest and most successful when they're part of strong communities with a shared a sense of responsibility for the wellbeing of everyone, and where people feel empowered to have input in the decisions that shape their lives in very real material ways. This is just one criticism of many, but I think it's a good example of how you can't separate the politics and self help stuff from Peterson
@davidswanson5669
@davidswanson5669 2 года назад
@@partylikeits1066 I don’t believe he has ever discouraged political engagement, but rather he’s discouraged political obsession. He discourages the notion that “fixing the huge problems of the world is possible even though your own life isn’t solved”. If everyone took that advice then the larger problems wouldn’t be as big, because everyone would act in more moral ways and with more responsibility. Also the idea that his followers want him to be their puppet masters is ridiculous. Peterson wants people to be in control of their own lives and he gives healthy advice just as any therapist would. Are we puppets of Fauci if we hang on his every word? Maybe, but to the degree that we just look forward to the advice of people we respect and we choose whether to take that advice, that’s not what it means to be controlled or to ask to be controlled. Biden is a puppet however, and while we don’t know who the master is, we clearly see someone who does only as told despite alternative wishes. I don’t see that kind of thing in anyone who follow Peterson, though detractors will relish the idea that anyone who follows Peterson is incapable of independent thought as well as dependent on anything Peterson says. If he has been corrupted by wealth (something that detractors again would be all too happy to see happen) then where is his exuberant spending that is the token of grifters and hypocrites (BLM leaders, mega-preachers, establishment politicians)? The vast majority of his wisdom is available freely on RU-vid and not behind a paywall, and his speaking tours where you pay to listen is to cover the cost of the venue. He hasn’t changed his tactics or philosophy in order to garner favor over the shifting tides of politically popular topics or beliefs. At the same time I see politicians from both sides of the isle shift and change positions and even contradict their own public statements on principles of a topic within years and even months. You could easily find some other rightwing hero to pick on that’s more flawed in character but I think people despise Peterson because he’s super effective, overwhelmingly consistent, and financially invincible.
@thakatspajamaz
@thakatspajamaz 2 года назад
I never blame anyone for falling for JP because his trojan horse is LEGITIMATE good advice and has helped many young men with surface level issues. The problem is when one digs deeper and sees where he's taking the trojan horse. I think that's what makes the 12 rules weird video mentioned above so effective. It shows how he's a gateway for reactionary thought because he doesn't have a coherent and usable ideology beyond that surface level help. If you're interested, both Contrapoints and Hbomberguy have great videos on Jordan Peterson from a critical, but not cruel perspective.

All the classic videos deserve an analisis. My personal favorite is "I feel fantastic", it's unironically my favorite piece of horror I've ever seen. I think under the layers it explores themes of creativity, abuse and trauma, and it manages to be disturbing by being filmed in a regular home with a cheap 90s camera, and showing a robot that looks like something between a cheap animatronic and a sick woman. Based on the fact that the woman says "I feel fantastic, run, run, run", and that the desciption tells the story of an ancient greek tragedy about a man who created a woman artificially and then fell in love with her, i think this video is about a woman who experienced sexual abuse in her childhood, but is being very resistive towards people who want to get closer to her -"Run, run, run" meaning "Get away from me". But off course the video can also be interpreted as a story about a moving sex doll that wants to get away from its creator and/or owner.

Hahaha I remember the "dancing baby"!! 😅 and then I remember the dancing baby meme going "viral," appearing on evening entertainment News shows, and then eventually friggin' Ally McBeal. 🤔 Suddenly, the dancing baby meme was no longer quirky and unique, it had lost all of its sheen or, perhaps more accurately, had it violently stripped away by the massive American corporate machine! (The same thing that happened to Nirvana, Metallica, and so many other great musicians and bands. They can fill up stadiums, appealing to millions of fans around the world and still be cool. Still producing genuine art. But, when the corporate machine gets their hands on them, they commercialize them and literally squeeze everything great right out of them, that had ever been initially appealing at all. Pretty soon your six year old siblings are claiming them as their favourites lol and suddenly that's when it's clear that original "coolness" is gone!) Anyway, great videos, mate! 👍

Same here but not at Spike and Mike's. Saw it at an animation festival in the early 2000's where Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeld were both presenting and doing a panel. Still got the signed dvd. I remember the Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Animation festivals, those were good times.

I really got into RU-vid Poops back in the early 2010s. They're bizarre but strange works of art in their own way.

I kept waiting for the part about weird internet videos that *weren't* centered on body horror, gore, and shock, but then the video ended. Maybe my idea of "weird" is closer to "unconventional" than "deeply unsettling."

I feel like RU-vid haiku is relevant to this too. The videos are usually made to be intentionally odd, and the name suggests that there's an artistic flare to it as well. (Haiku being a Japanese form of poetry)

i saw a glimpse of "Interface" made by umami at the end of the Video. If anybody is interested in watching it I highly recommend it. Its weird and unintelligable at first but seems to contain a fascinating narrative that makes you want to keep watching.

Well, the first video you use as an example, "Rejected" wasnt made with the internet in mind. Its a short film from 2000 and was nominated for an Academy Award.
