Though the drums on Radiohead's "Exit Music" don't appear until well over halfway into the track's runtime, they make quite a bombastic entrance that helped earn the track its reputation as a fan favorite. Love this series! I've just gotten into recording drums (beyond a classic/boring 5-mic into a board into a DAW), and these videos have been so mind-blowing (I still trip over the QotSA video where the cymbals were recorded separate from the drums... I mean, what the what...)

I don't know if you guys are doing requests for this series...but...Talking Heads - Take Me To The River needs an episode. That snare sound is something else and featured so prominently in the beginning of the song. Love the series!

Thanks for the excellent run down on the techniques! 8:33 perhaps you meant an Oktava sdc microphone? If it was crappy, I’m gonna assume it was meant that the condition of the microphone was in disrepair because those are very fine microphones!

I think that’s more about Dave Fridmann. Flaming Lips’ drums were already way out of control (haha) by the time Radiohead’s first record was coming out.

ok, the backing track, how was it made? what reverb on the guitars? it actually sounds better than the original i think

The guitar was pretty simple. Telecaster through an OD-1 and a Boss RE-20 Space Echo juiced! The bass was driven with a Big Muff but a lot of the sound is coming from over-saturating a Warm Audio MPX preamp and compressing the daylights out of it.

Theres a video on youtube (i think with kevin parker) where they go over the drum sound. Would still be cool to see it but id rather weezers pinkerton or in utero first!
