A couple pointers after doing some tests: 1 - The light source should be just outside and up of the top corner of the frame, if the light is too low, then the flag will keep poking into frame. 2 - This seems to work best with lenses 50mm and longer. 3 - The bounce should at least be above the subject's line of sight and angled down towards the subject. 4- The bounce should be angled towards the light in order to bounce it, and about 45 degrees from the subject to get some nice contrast.

Thank you for this breakdown. I enjoyed it, but expected a bit more or practical showcase of what you exactly mean - there was some, but if possible, would love to see samples and hear your description even maybe on different scenes from Scott's films. PS> I would love to hear your breakdown on Bladerunner lighting technique. Thanks.

Really liked this breakdown of a signature style and explanation. Favorite videos from the channel have been when you take cinematography styles (and general techniques), break them down, and show how they're done.

Hi I just wanted to say "THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTENT!" Definitely find people who are like you to be the great teachers for us inspiring cinematographers! I feel like not enough appreciation is passed around for great work. Anyways I just got my light meter and have been using it constantly and understanding the stops of light and having a much clearer vision on how to make image look a certain way (aka your help!)!!

Ive watched Aliens, the second one, about 1000 times, since I was 10 years old. Let me tell you that lighting is nothing without setting and music. We must view Ridley as a collab, The music in Aliens was next level. The pacing of the cuts between scenes in line with the music, The sound, To be the best you cant look at the techniques alone as visual, sound, or scene pacing, you have to look at what he did as a whole, The story and characters, The tiny sub stories like one friend dying and the other getting held back to come his aid as he was dying. The scene switching with the sound. The actaul props and backgrounds, what you aRE LIGHTING matters. To be Ridley you can never view Ridley as having a lighting style, he. had a complete picture style which is why 1980's Alien. movies still outdo modern movies even with all their advances with movie editing. Ridleys style was more than visual alone and that's why he is better than everyone else. His style is collab of styles, its genious but also it involves being a team player.

Thank you so much for making this. Alien and Bladerunner are two of the formative movies for me. I've been messing around with these techniques ever since I saw this and am incorporating them in my RU-vid videos and they'll be part of my arsenal for paid work if the aesthetic fits. Not sure why this video impacted me so much, but I just wanted to let you know that it did.
