The video is intended to be a brief introduction to Mycenaean history and culture, which in its heyday, roughly between 1,600-1,100 BCE defined the Greek antiquity = Mycenaean Age. Historically belonging to the late Bronze Age, Mycenae was a powerful, imposing citadel that dominated the Peloponnese and southern Greece. The history of the Mycenae fortress is closely intertwined with ancient Greek mythology. Founded by Perseus, the son of Zeus, other illustrious kings succeeded to the leadership of the city, mentioning only Atreus, Agamemnon, Aegisthus, Orestes. We cannot mention Agamemnon, the one who led the invasion force in the Trojan War, without making conexion with the renowned archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann who, obsessed with the Homeric odysseys, discovered the Troy Citadel after which, in 1876, he reached Mycenae. Here he did many excavations which led to the discovery of important artefacts, some wrongly attributed to Agamemnon.
In the first part of the video we recognize some constructions from the outside of the fortress, after which, through the Lions Gate (the symbol of the citadel), integrated into the cyclopean wall (this representing the expansion made during the years 1,350-1,250 BC), we discover the lower part of the citadel.
In the final part of the video we visit the imposing vaulted tomb (tholos), called since the 19th century, only for mythological reasons, either the treasure of King Atreus or the tomb of King Agamemnon. It is the largest, most elaborate and best preserved Mycenaean tomb of this type.
