Main places of interest in Genoa.
Overlooking the Ligurian Sea, Genoa was the capital of one of the maritime republics from the 11th century to 1797. In particular, from the 12th to the 15th century, the city played a leading role in trade in Europe, becoming, at the time , one of the largest naval powers on the continent and considered among the richest cities in the world. She was also nicknamed the Superb by Francesco Petrarca. Its university has a history dating back to the 15th century and since 2006 part of its historic centre, the Strade Nuove and the system of the Rolli palaces of Genoa, has been included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In fact, its historic center is one of the largest and most densely populated in Europe, especially the medieval area. In Genoa there are several dozen churches, the main and oldest of which are located in the historic center. In several cases they arose as noble chapels of the main city families and were therefore a way to show one's prestige. The historic center of Genoa is articulated as it is in a maze of small squares and narrow caruggi. (The Caruggio or Carruggio is a street, alley or even portico typical of Ligurian historical centres. In ancient times, the conformation of the alleyways, with the very contiguous buildings, also had a defensive purpose above all against pirate raids) . It combines a medieval dimension with subsequent sixteenth-century and baroque interventions. A large part, enclosed in the section of the so-called Strade Nuove (via Garibaldi, via Cairoli and via Balbi), where the Rolli palaces stand, has been declared a UNESCO world heritage site. With the term Rolli (derived from the word rolls), or more precisely Rolli of the public lodgings of Genoa, starting from 1576 the lists of palaces and excellent residences of the noble families who aspired to host, on the basis of a public draw, were indicated personalities in transit for state visits. Forty-two of these buildings have been included in the World Heritage List.
In the Staglieno district is the monumental cemetery of the same name, built starting in 1835 to a design by the architect Carlo Barabino, which houses the burials of many illustrious Genoese of the 19th and 20th centuries and which preserves notable examples of cemetery art from the 19th century.
