Some American cities use buses, or trams, or trains. Peachtree City, Georgia, has a different solution: it's not quite public transit, but a hundred miles of golf cart tracks helps to keep cars off the road.

The Georgia road trip continues! Thanks to Mayor Fleisch and her team for their time. I realise that the golf carts aren't directly comparable to public transit - for a start, they're privately-owned - but I'd say that replacing cars with slower-speed, electric vehicles is at least an improvement!

I just want to make it abundantly clear that this is not the only city that does this. This is very common in Minnesotan towns, as many neighborhoods are right next to golf courses. I know this is common practice in Minnetrista, every home has golf carts.

@@57atk2lr Most of the central areas of the city are accessible by the paths! Anything not directly within the city's limits you can't get to, however, so quite a few things are a mile or two out of reach. "You can't have a quarter of a cart network" I really wish my local council were capable of that kind of logic. They decided to build a cycle path the the next town and successfully completed their plan. At no point did they ask the other town to build a cycle path to join theirs though. So it's literally a path that goes nowhere, it heads towards the other town and then stops dead on the boarder. Well done, money well spent. You must feel proud of you accomplishment every time you *drive* past it.

@jasonreed7522

The golfcarts are mainly a legacy vehicle left over from the town being mostly golf courses. And the multi use paths was the town's attempt to keep people from driving golfcarts on car roads for obvious safety concerns. All these comments along the lines of "they should use bikes instead!" are missing the point that the city-wide network would not exist without the carts. Since the paths offer multi-mode transportation, the city was able to raise the taxes necessary to build and maintain the paths. If they had tried to raise taxes for a bike-only path network, the city government would likely not have been successful. The network is as extensive as it is because of the golf carts.

The Chinese are adding electric cars the size and speed of golf carts to their city streets. They have to do it because of cost and pollution. In many cities, there just is no reason we have to drive cars that can go sixty miles an hour when the traffic congestion keeps the movement of vehicles down to less than the speed of a horse drawn carriage. Example: average speed (non rush hour) in London is 19 kph (12 mph). Having smaller, more maneuverable vehicles would likely de-congest traffic as well.

There's also a golf-cart-heavy retirement community in Florida called The Villages where basically everyone drives golf carts on the roads and multi-modal paths. Some of the "Yesteryear" golf carts cost upwards of $50,000. It's mindblowing.

@@kiDkiDkiD12 The geographic area of Europe is slightly larger than the United States (10.1 versus 9.8 million km^2). The population density of Europe is about twice that of the United States (73 versus 33 per km^2), but that's not particularly relevant when discussing cities and suburban areas, where density is vastly different than the sparsely populated rural areas that make up the majority of the landmass of the US.

This reminds me a lot of Catalina Island just off the coast of Long Beach. Since there is a small number of permanent residents, they use golf carts to get around since cars are so expensive to have shipped out to the island. It is also very very small. Some of those golf carts are totally custom built to look like monster trucks and hotrods. Really cool place to go visit if there is an opportunity that presents itself.

Avalon, California on Catalina Island is a more extreme example of this. There are a limited amount of cars allowed on the island, so many golf carts. These carts have state license plates and pay registration fees. Though the streets were made to support normal vehicles, most of the vehicles on the road are golf carts.
