I used to spend summers in Alabama ( before AC that was brutal) and I still have kin there. There are many worse places in the U.S. than Alabama; spend some time in Detroit, Cleveland, South Chicago, summer or winter, lots of hate, danger, crime, failing education, dead ends, and they're a lot less beautiful, except for the kudzu.

Kowloon is the middle part of Hong Kong, and Kowloon Fort was a fortress inside Kowloon, which then became Kowloon Fort City, the lawless land. I don't remember clearly, but they had electricity and water supply. Yet the hygiene was really bad back then, as government wasn't able to enter the city, they had to rely on their own to clean up garbage and streets. That's all I an remember about the fort city. It's definitely not a good place to live within, and a place destined to fall, but for me and some other Hong Kongers, it's a romantic place.

If they had electricity and water I am assuming they in some way generated both for themselves since Hong Kong companies would not be allowed inside to run wires or do repairs to whatever. By waste I meant garbage and also plumbing waste, since I'm assuming they were not hooked up to the Hong Kong sewer system. As for household refuse after people picked it up, then what? Did they throw it over the walls or burn it? Seems like burning would have been dangerous. Could people living there come and go, or if they left did Hong Kong authorities not allow them back in? What did they do with their dead? It doesn't sound romantic to me; it sounds more like the Black Hole of Calcutta, but bigger and with more people. I am assuming they had frequent epidemics like Typhoid and Typhus and other yucky things. I can understand you and your friends, when you were young, thinking it romantic, maybe to abandon or escape your world, but I think you would have wished yourselves home. All this is very interesting, including the information you provided. I shall have to find a book about it.

It was bad, but not that bad. Hard to believe, but people found their way to achieve balance and kinda established their own rules. There wasn't a wall - at least not a physical one. People were able to go in and out freely, just no law enforcement were able to lay their hands on the city itself. They had water and electric stolen from the outside, having residents of different skill sets, they were able to maintain the systems themselves, tho barely. As waste, there was sewer built along side the fort, predating the fort city. Tho not completely, but that solved the problem of waste water for them. The main problem for them was physical waste, they could pick up daily household waste and brought them out themselves, yet for larger garbage, those just sat around the corner of streets or somebody's roof. As epidemics, I haven't read about any major outbreak within the city, hard to imagine it was the case, but I bet at some point in the city's history, the residents learnt it the hard way, as they do clean their own streets. And the high population of doctors(tho unlicensed) may have helped prevent that from happening too. And lastly, the deads. It wasn't a problem after all, as people could travel freely, they just brought the deads somewhere else for funerals.

Drew You bet! I've been both places. But at least they're green and near sea water. To me, except for mountain areas, hell is New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, West Texas: sand and rock and mesquite thorney bushes. I'd kill myself before I would live in Phoenix or El Paso.
