Peg, thanks for doing the tag. I am glad you did it! By the way, before I forget, I ordered the book The Caning. Thanks for the recommendation earlier in the year. I am jealous of the Shelby Foote series. I only have Volume 2, but I will find the other two eventually. I am saving up for Allen Nevin's set of books. I found them on Amazon for, I think, a reasonable price. Lincoln's Melancholy and Tried by War were awesome. I have both of the Gettysburg books by Guelzo and Trudeau, however, I haven't had a chance to read them. You did a great job with the tag, lots of recommendations. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

Hello, I Am brand new to your channel and very excited to see your past videos. I am a huge reader of historical fiction and so I was happy to come across your channel to start reading some other books on history. It feels like it's just the next step! I was curious about the the three books you mentioned at the beginning of your video on the civil war. Are they fiction or not fiction? Cuz I am very intrigued. Thank you and I look forward to watching your previous videos as well as your new ones

The Civil War is a topic I've yet to give its proper reading deep dive. I'll definitely have to check some of these out. Speaking of historical fiction, and of Lincoln, have you read Lincoln In The Bardo by George Saunders? It's a fantastical historical fiction inspired by a report of Lincoln visiting his newly dead son Willie's body in the cemetery. It's told through the disjointed musings of ghosts, as they react to Lincoln's presence and grief over his dead son. Interspersed throughout are historical and fictional correspondence of the time, dealing with Civil War events as well as recollections from many about Lincoln himself. It's a fascinating read though the unique format isn't for everyone. Saunders appeared on Live From Here where the cast and he read a passage from the novel. It's a great slice of the book, really highlighting how the story is told. It's on Live From Here's RU-vid account.

Terrific! Have you read the Library of America series on the Civil War entitled "THE CIVIL WAR, Told By Those Who Lived It"? Wonderful stuff! Recently my husband and I visited Washington DC, and went to see a performance at the Ford's Theater. Nothing has ever made me feel so close to being a part of history as sitting beneath that theater box where Lincoln was shot. My husband and I will be visiting the Robert Lincoln home in Vermont this summer (if Covid 19 allows), but the Lincoln family died out in the late 1970's. Just as a side note, I live in Rhode Island, very close to where Sullivan Ballou lived. His grave is located at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, RI.

Hi Elizabeth! I've been collecting those LOA volumes on the Civil War, but have yet to crack them open. And oh boy, how I envy your trip to Ford's Theater. I've told Martine that if we make it back to DC someday, Ford's Theater is the first place I want to go. I've been to the Lincoln and Washington Memorials, but that cramped, tiny little theater is where I want to be. I can only imagine how surreal it felt to sit under the Lincoln box. Wow. Thanks for letting me know about the Lincolns...it's sad! The Lincoln line is truly gone. I love that you are so close to Sullivan Ballou...it really is a small world! I hope you're able to visit the Robert Lincoln home this summer, as I hope we are all able to get out more. Thanks so much for this very thoughtful note! It really delighted me. :)

Peg: will add my kudos to the Foote, Nevins sets, and have been working my way through Catton. Was surprised to hear your remarks on Sears’ bio of McClellan. Read and enjoyed it many years back, along with Landscape Turned Red. Speaking of Abe bios, check out the upcoming “Abe” by David S Reynolds on Amazon. Reynolds is a fine writer, and it supposedly tips the scales at close to 1,000 pages. Due out in October.

Hi Peg, thanks again for another exciting video on the Civil War! I still need to find a copy of one of your earlier book recommendations by Elizabeth Brown Pryor on RE Lee. However, here are a few thoughts/recommendations relating to some of the tag questions. First, Grant. I noticed you have Ronald C White's biography on your shelf. I think it is superior to the Chernow book. Your critique of the two would be greatly appreciated. The McFeely edited "Memoirs" I read but had no idea about his take on Grant. I hope you have the new Elizabeth D. Samet "The Annotated Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant." If not, I think you will find it extraordinary. She is a professor of English at West Point. The annotations are superb and the bibliographies (including one on war fiction) excellent. Second, fiction. Let me add Gore Vidal's "Lincoln" to the list. Third, post Civil War era. David W. Blight's "Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory." Again thanks for these thought-provoking videos.
@TheHistoryShelf
@TheHistoryShelf 4 года назад
Hi jwb! Wow, you have some great input and feedback here. First, the book by Elizabeth Brown Pryor is "Reading the Man: Robert E. Lee in His Own Words". It's fantastic. Yes, I have the Ronald C. White biography and meant to read that one first, but then it seemed like only a month or two later, Chernow's doorstopper of a book came out. Indeed, I may just start with White's book, as I've heard great things about it. Too bad his book has been a bit upstaged by Chernow. And it's so funny you mentioned Samet's Annotated Memoirs...I was JUST browsing it on Amazon the other day, debating on whether to get it. I think I have my answer. ;) Also, I have David Blight's Frederick Douglass biography and will be doing a buddy read of that book this summer with another reader. I have not heard of his "Race and Reunion" but I'll add that to my TBR list. Thanks so much for these thoughtful comments and recommendations! :)

Hi, fairly new to the channel so apologies for questions on an older video, but which area of the Civil War do you feel is under-written about that you would jump to buy a book on? And if you were to write a book on the civil war, what would you cover?
@TheHistoryShelf
@TheHistoryShelf 3 года назад
Hi Mark! Thanks for finding my channel and your fabulous questions. Wow, I love these kind that make me pause. I may have mentioned this in another video, but I would DEARLY love to see more research and history into the after-effects of the Civil War on soldiers' lives. They didn't have the concept of PTSD back then, nor even "shell shock," but the brutal fact of the matter is the war must have shredded many a survivor's mind having seen all they did. The only book I've been able to locate so far on the topic is "Aberration of Mind: Suicide and Suffering in the Civil War-Era South" by Diane Miller Sommerville. It's a great start, but we need more. To your next question, I would have to say perhaps expand on my undergraduate thesis, which was published in the University of Michigan Journal of History this year. It looked into the 1864 Overland Campaign, specifically The Wilderness and Spotsylvania, and how Grant was the superior tactician and strategist to Robert E. Lee. I would expand it to include the other actions of the North Anna all the way up and into the siege of Petersburg. Great questions...thanks for reaching out!

I've read some reviews of Shelby Foote (with commentary on the Ken Burns documentary) saying it is biased toward the confederacy and feeding into the lost cause narrative. What is your opinion on that?
@TheHistoryShelf
@TheHistoryShelf 3 года назад
Here's the thing with Foote: he's a beautiful storyteller. Was he more sympathetic sometimes toward the average Southern soldier, absolutely yes. Was he even-handed in his praise/denunciation of Union and Confederate leaders and politicians, also a yes. I read Foote for what he can give me...great battle accounts and an insightful judge of character. I don't NOT read him because he may have bought into the Lost Cause...because I'm not swayed by reading what I disagree with. I just read it, judge it, take what's good, and leave the rest. Does that help?
