I've listened to all types of music the past 35 years , but turning the clock back an watching this from rude boy from 77 , shame we have to move on an grow old . STRUMMER 🎼❤
I was luckily enough to see them live 3 times in London, my all time favourite band. Also at the the forefront of Rock against Racism set up after Eric Clapton's racist comments .
It's brilliant to re-live this powerfully raw Clash performance at the legendary Barbarella's in Birmingham. I was there 3 or 4 nights a week with my mates we were there that night - have just found out there's a shot of me with Ray Gange (Rude Boy!) @ 5.40. Got to say - Chuffed!
One of the greatest rock´n´roll singers ever. Too bad he went too young. Had too much waiting for him. Who would have known what would become of the Clash when they started?
Looked and sounded like a drama school drop out pretending to be an oink. Subsequently confirmed when it was revealed he was a public school boy son of a diplomat.
@@humbertoflores2545 the punk/new wave era coincided with ‘the troubles’ in Northern Ireland. Belfast in particular would regularly get bombed, so most non-Irish bands wouldn’t play there BITD 😫
in this very moment the whole Europe held their breath. The prime minister of Italy was missing, held prisoner and being tortured. (And later murdered.) And Joe chosed to brandish the kidnappers' logo t-shirt.
I was always under the impression was that the RAF referred to in the song was a reference to the Royal Air Force, since the song in question is about England and not Europe as a whole.
I was wondering whether an English native speaker could be very kind to write down the lyrics from 2'52 to 3'18 and then from 3'48 to 4'40? I understand only some words, so frustrating. I am a big fan of Joe and The Clash ! Thank you ! Marie
The only thing i can make out is, i think, "sacred pledge", "you have done wrong, whatever you said, well dont you try to argue, dont argue with me, I am your commanding officer"
Hmm, yeah, it's challenging. Taking a stab at it . . . First set: Sign the [unintelligible] Take the pledge You have done wrong Whatever you said Now don't you try to argue Argue with me I am your commanding officer Reduce you [?] [Unintelligible] [Unintelligible] Ah yeah Second set: [Unintelligible] Unless your leader was a gun And a man to wield [?] a gun Did you pull the trigger like you can wangle your fingers Take [?] a trigger you know and [unintelligible] Cold, cold steel Cold, cold, cold steel [Variations on 'cold, cold steel']
Gas to think everyone in this video would be around 58 - time fucking flies Also, does anybody know who the person is that the camera keeps focusing on in the crowd- I have seen him in a few separate Clash videos
No was in borstal at the time but had a good friend who introduced me to punk but then he'd died of overdrive and I remember how all us young 16 yr olds thought how'd that happen to peaches from Camden I think
Who is that geezer with the Bob Marley T-shirt on, he seems to take up a lot of footage, maybe it was part of a film I don't know.. As the man says we didn't have internet then, so a shirt with Brigades Rosso looked cool even if we didn't know all the politics behind the story
B0rnles13 this clip is taken from the film Rude Boy. The movie was the story of the guy you refer to who got a job as a roadie with the Clash bit then was kicked off for being a lazy shite... lots of footage of the Clash performing. I remember buying the video in NYC in 1982....
here's he's also missing one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--Gp6lYQrqSE.html&frags=pl%2Cwn but not here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J_DPKWGH9yc.html&frags=pl%2Cwn in between he went to the dentist )
James that's right didn't one of them get hepatitis from this disgusting trend of spitting towards the band. Maybe it wasn't someone from the Clash but I definitely remember reading that someone got hepatitis this way. I also read in an interview with John Lydon, I think, and he mentioned that when they played gigs the band avoided the front of the stage because it was so covered in spit and snot that it became like an ice rink it was so slippery. What I don't understand at all is why kids back then would think that spitting on the band they'd payed to see and hear live was an acceptable thing to do. How did this disgusting craze start and why did it go on for so long. If I was in a band and the first three rows of the audience were clearing their noses and throats and gobbing it on to the stage. I'd pick up the mic and say "Sorry we won't be playing anymore and there won't be any refunds. Why don't you take it up with the first three rows" what a fucking disgusting trend. Reminds me of some low grade festival I went to with the likes of Doctor and the Medics and Zodiac Mindwarp, playing. I think it was headed by the Fun Loving Criminals, it was definitely during the set played by the Fun Loving Criminals that people were pissing in cider bottles and launching them at the stage. I remember seeing a young woman squatting on the ground, initially I thought she was having a piss but she was actually shitting in an empty see through toiletries bag. When she'd finished she stood up and launched it onto the stage. It landed right in front of Huey and burst open at the zip. It was at this point that the band stopped playing and Huey told the crowd they hadn't come to have bottles of piss and bags of shit thrown at them. They stormed off the stage. The rest of the festival continued in much the same way. The crowd had come to get wild on drink and drugs and not really to hear these third rate bands play. They began to enjoy chucking bottles of piss and plastic shopping bags of shit at the bands. I was so grossed out I never went to that festival again. I think it was Burning Man in south west Scotland.
Joe Strummer got hepatitis ,which he said he caught from `gob` but later related he caught it from a dodgy needle when he `tried heroin`,no doubt ` suffering for his art`.
electricleg Thanks, I was pretty sure it was a member of the Clash that got hepatitis from someone spitting in his mouth. As for contracting it from a shot of heroin, I have to say I feel very sorry for the man. I know a guy who got hep c from an infected blood transfusion. He died about 14 years ago. They tried him on various treatments that's didn't work. His liver had become decompensated by the time they realised he had it. He was extremely ill, towards the end. It's not a death I'd wish on anyone. However I've heard that new drugs like ribavirin in use with other drugs have a 98% rate of success when it comes to treatment today.
Certainly a nasty a nasty thing to get ,common among drug users, very sad that you bloke you knew got it from a transfusion.I think Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) died from it.
Ich auch nicht aber Joe Strummer ist dabei, daher muss ich den sehen :D der selbe typ ist auch bei 'nem anderen Konzert der Band dabei. Beim Rock against Racism event. Da trägt Joe auch sein RAF-Shirt
I really like the Clash but how is this an amazing performance... Sounds rubbish... He's probably on summat like, but I'd say its a poor live version this
I love the Clash and Joe Strummer, but Joe was a communist through and through; he didn't wear the shirt by accident. I don't share his politics, but I'm happy to hear him sing and talk about his since he's intelligent and sincere about it.
Joe wasn't a communist, he was a socialist! All you have to do is listen to his lyrics to see that. Coming out with such an ignorant comment as this just isn't helpful to genuine Clash fans!
I love the Clash too but I agree, if he was still alive he'd probably sing for the migrants and hate Trump, Putin and Salvini. Without being aware of it he was part of the System, he was the propaganda of Liberals who ruined and destroyed Western countries. There's no secret, you can't be successful in the entertainment business if you don't serve the agenda of the System. I was watching right before a video of RATM, another libtards band... Rock is propaganda, not rebellion.
