My favorite Clash song. My dad and I used to fight a lot in my teenage years but everytime we were alone together, we would listen to this. I still remember being 5 and singing the chorus at the top of my lungs with him in the car. Our family is Spanish but I never connected the dots until now. Dad passed 5 months ago, I hope he knows that everytime I play this, I’m thinking of him and wishing we could sing this at the top of our lungs for one last time. Miss you Reginaldo Peres, you’ll always be my Spanish bomb.
I am 78 years old. WHen my wife left me and took the kids this was the music that kept me going. I will forever be thankfull to clash, and as my life draws to a close, I want to proclaim my love for this amazing band.
''death or glory, just another story"'......''in every dingy basement,on every dingy street, every draggin' handclap over every draggin' beat,it's just the beat of time,a beat that must go on,if you've been tryin' for years we already heard your song''............''now every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world, ends up making payments on a new car or a girl...love and hate tattooed across the knuckles of his hands, hands that slap his kids around, cuz they don't understand, how death or glory became, just another story''...................although i am sure nils did not slap his kids around.........thought of this song nils when i read your comment ............mid life crisis stuff, been there too brother
I´m Chilean descendent from spanish republicans & anarchists fighters exiles after the civil war against the fascism, and this song along with others from The Clash resonates with my family till today

This actually might be my favorite song of all time. Musically great, but lyrically intelligent and educated. There is little doubt in my mind that listening to The Clash made me more aware of the world around me and my place in it. This album gave me a thirst for knowledge and led me to attaining a history degree. I hope to someday teach future generations about the world the way Joe taught me.
"This album gave me a thirst for knowledge and led me to attaining a history degree" Talk about a siren's song leading you into the rocks. What the fuck do you even do with a history degree besides go back to living with your parents and bussing tables at TGI Fridays?
@@ItsMcDude hah! I am definitely not working in the history field (a huge majority don't work in the field they studied), but I don't regret the degree for a second. It expanded my knowledge and critical thinking skills, I did it for me, not for some job. but I have been considering going back for a master's or teaching certificate lately.
My favourite song by The Clash. Contrasts contemporary Spain (with its beaches, casinos, and many tourists) with its violent history (a murderous authoritarian successfully coming to power) and instability hidden just under the surface, in which Western tourists are unaware or ignorant to the countries disturbing politics. The song mixes unsettling political and historical references ("Federico Lorca is dead and gone" "The freedom fighters died upon the hill") with trivial and superficial phrases ("Spanish weeks in my disco casino" "I'm flyin' in on a DC 10 tonight") and nonsensical Spanish lyrics. The songs upbeat positive tune also contrasts with the stark lyrics.
For a while he had a Spanish girlfriend ( Palmolive of The Slits ). He spend a fair amount a time in Spain and produced a local punk band but hey you no doubt know this.
Hard to believe that the days of ’39 were just 40 years before this. London Calling is now 44 years old. A boppy history lesson in just three minutes. Mick and Joe always sang with so much conviction. Love the final guitar bend.
This song honestly might feature Strummer's best lyricism. That third verse (Starting with "The hillsides ring with 'free the people!') is just unreal.
Man, I've just actually listened to this album entirely for the first time, and it's mind-blowing. It's like my life has a purpose again since I've found new music. Before this I've just heard London Calling and Should i stay or should i go by The Clash and no more, but this album is one of the best I've ever listened to. Btw this is my favourite song of the album, being a Spanish speaker makes it way more enjoyable!
This is Exactly How Albums like this should be Hailed ❤️❤️❤️🎵🎤🎚️ It's one of the Best Albums of ALL time and that's FACT 👍❤️ Love it when the Younger generation know what good music is all about
Esta es la canción perfecta, lo tiene todo, buen ritmo, melodia, letras, como se funde el juego de voces en el estribillo, los arreglos de guitarra, como toca el tema de la guerra civil con tanta clase, como mecha los idiomas y.... Fedrico Lorca ❤❤❤❤❤ la amé forever, The clash yo te quero infinito!!!!
Trenches full of poets. Incredible song from a stunning album. This sounds as new as it did then. And the sound engineer in me says, man isn't that ride is one of the best ever recorded?
Te amo the claaaaash. The clash besto banda.
@Bill Carson By the way it's Español (pronounced Es_ PAN_yol) not Espenol. The first Spanish lyric, "ventana" means window. The Spanish lyric, "Señorita" pronounced Sen-YOR-it's means miss as in Miss So and so. The Spanish lyrics in the chorus, "yo te quiero infinito, yo te acueda, oh mi corazón" means "I love you to infinity, I remember you, oh my heart"
I think this song exemplifies the importance of music in communicating information and the emotions associated with them. I had next to no knowledge about the Spanish Civil War nor the other uprisings mentioned in the song, and it was this song that pushed me to research them. And I’m very glad, being American the Spanish Civil War very much echos the state of my country today.
One of the last times I was at the Rock Hall they had a room dedicated to The Clash. It was amazing. Had Joe's Type Writer he wrote these lyrics on. The Clash will always have a place in my heart. A positive band for a negative teenage mind.
I have very limited knowledge of Spanish history, I know there was a civil war and once read Hemingway's novel, titled, For whom the Bell Tolls. Sounds like Joe and the band new about Spain.
@@ericblowtorch Not Mick mate, my mate Mark Jones he was stabbed in Thailand about 2008. Millwall fan and my friend from London , who was into same music and culture even though im from Scotland. Me and him went Canaries on blags a few times i used to sing this on way to airport and he would laugh and say "I knew you were gonna sing that" . He deserved better. RIP Mark. So sorry.
This song reminds me of my first ever trip to Spain, when I spent a few days in Granada. Reading Gerald Brennan’s “Face of Spain” on the plane there, going to Lorca’s old house, drinking cans of Cruzcampo in that little square opposite the Alhambra and a group of locals taking pity on me in a bar because I was by myself and inviting me out for drinks later, happy days!!
Spanish songs in Andalucia The shooting sites in the days of '39 Oh, please, leave the vendanna open Fredrico Lorca is dead and gone Bullet holes in the cemetery walls The black cars of the Guardia Civil Spanish bombs on the Costa Rica I'm flying in a DC 10 tonight Spanish bombs, yo te quierro y finito Yo te querda, oh mi corazón Spanish bombs, yo te quierro y finito Yo te querda, oh mi corazón Spanish weeks in my disco casino The freedom fighters died upon the hill They sang the red flag They wore the black one But after they died it was Mockingbird Hill Back home the buses went up in flashes The Irish tomb was drenched in blood Spanish bombs shatter the hotels My senorita's rose was nipped in the bud Spanish bombs, yo te quierro y finito Yo te querda, oh mi corazón Spanish bombs, yo te quierro y finito Yo te querda, oh mi corazón The hillsides ring with "Free the people" Or can I hear the echo from the days of '39? I believe they say "leave the ventana open", wich means window. Not vendanna. Also i don't think there's such thing as quierro. Guess it's "yo te quiero infinito" (yo te quiero infinito - i want you / i like you forever). And not querda. I think it still goes "quiero". But let any castellano buddie confirm this.
So, after listening again to the music, and knowing that Joe had some good knowledge about castellano, i would say that the chorus would go like "Oh my corazón" instead of "Oh mi corazón", mixing english - my - with castellano. The word "mi" is pronounced way differently form the way they sing it.
My favourite song of all time from my favourite band. This song has everything. I saw The Clash 14 times. When they were on form there are not many bands ever that could better them live.
I really like this album, every song is great, and Joe Strummer has secured a place among the immortals as a musician and poet, and The Clash as a band as well...
To think where the Clash were with the eponymous album 2 and a half years earlier both musically and lyrically to releasing London Calling is night and day, when this came out I bought it within a day or two of it’s release date and it blew me away..it was, is and shall forever remain my favourite album of all time ❤️
I was 20 when i bought this just on the strength of i fought the law.a cover song.this album changed me me in a way i have never recovered from.god bless the boys from england with gituars and a superior drummer.
When this album came out I couldn't wait to see them live. I lived in Paris at the time and saw them on the 1980 tour. The place was rocking. Great memories.

Most people don’t even realize that the Saint Patrick’s Day Battalion flag which is green with the gold harp on it was used when somewhere between 180 to 220 Irish men marched along side of their Mexican cohorts to battle for Mexican freedom.
This song has been breaking my heart since long before I had any real ability to comprehend what Joe's speaking about in the lyrics. It just hurts - amazing songwriting; really special stuff.
Esta banda .es muy acomedida y juiciosa considero yo ,en su contenido .es casi un perfecto libro de historia mundial viviente .sin dejar de mencionar washington bullet hasta chile sale al baile en este ultimo tema
