Brilliant!! No 91's, no Voyagers and no wires! How I wish we could go back to those days! And that first generation DMU running past flat out on the ECML- seems almost unthinkable now doesn't it!
I'm so glad that you filmed this. What is so sad is how we took it all for granted, and it's probably just as well that we didn't know then what we were going to end up with. At least now we can sit down at the computer with a beer or two and remember just why it was so important to us. I'm not saying that I don't enjoy the railways nowadays, but it's too 'clinical' and 'sanitised', and that's probably why I do most railway stuff abroad now: loco-hauled trains and (especially in Eastern Europe) the ability to wander around wherever you want (sensibly) without being treated like a criminal...
Thanks and glad you enjoyed the footage. As we know those great days will never come back so its nice to sit back and watch this old stuff 30 years on....Cheers.....Trevor.''
Fantastic video and some great Trans Pennine memories for me. Alas my Class 45 association can only continue in the Mainline and Replica Railways shape and form. Cannot complain though.
Superb video of Britain's fastest accelerating diesel loco with 5 field diverts ! I have had 115 mph out of a Class 45 on more than one occasion. BR's best driver, instructor and chief traction inspector told me "That is pretty good. At 118 mph the armatures spin off the traction motors." Then after a short pause, he added "And I shall not tell you how I found that out !!" Being a Londoner, I used to get them out of St. Pancras. Then when they took over the Transpennine North route, I used to go to York, and get one to Leeds, and back to York, back and forth three times, getting 6 locos on one trip, before going back to London. If there was a Class 45 railtour, the chances are, that I was on it. 45 106 to Edinburgh, 45 110 to Fishguard, 45 104 to Uckfield, 45 144 to Worcester, double headed Class 45s in tandem over the Settle Carlisle, 45 107 to Southport, 45 048 "The Royal Marines" on a RESL tour to Nottingham, 9 hours overnight on Birmingham New Street just to get 45 012 to name but a few.
Amazing old footage of the 'Peaks' Trevor. So good to recall these in passenger service and see them at some speed. Very enjoyable to watch. Cheers - Allan.
Ken Browne Thanks for commenting anyway Ken.I only got interested when two of my lads liked that era and asked me to do some filming.Glad i did....Trevor.''
As an apprentice fitter one of my first unpleasant jobs was to cut up 45s! A real shame as really there was nothing wrong with them ? And really just classed as surplus! The bogies were used for snow ploughs and little else was needed ?
