This is something that is rarely talked about in song writing but obviously very important

More gold from the good doctor! For those interested in this topic I'd suggest two areas to look at - orchestration (lots of good books available), and listen to the parts played by pro bass players. Cheers!

Danke Schöen, Herr Doktor. Yes yes yes!!! Many pianos today are stretch-tuned in the low lows and highs, so even with a fabulous piano plugin, we can run into those battling bass freqs! It's a delicate dance :)

Great tip. Another one I had to learn which people may look over is making sure there are no spaces between each note on midi bass. makes a huge difference which you obviously did that in this tutorial.
@BobbyHuff
@BobbyHuff 10 месяцев назад
Yes but there are also songs where space is needed. Mutt Lange is huge on this concept. I did a video on it...

I totally appreciate the EXACT way you've been making your videos. You've been teaching us how to mix rather than how to use plugins. Even though I do see your face when I set my initial CLA76 vocal attacks and releases, it's your principles that I really appreciate... so don't change! I just finished a mix and your teachings came up in my mind all through the learning journey. Respect! (And thanks!)

Bobby I have total respect for your musical talent.People like us care about the quality of sound and can demonstrate the procedure within the box Cubase 12 pro for me.I use more outboard gear ,like my SVT Ampeg head into a Radial direct box and use what I have and achive the same results.There are many ways that we can get the sounds into a recording platform.This concept here is right on. Peace to you Bobby Huff ! You have attitude boy ! and I love it. Alphonse Meloche from the north of the border.

Everyone should take a simple "class" in lower interval limits and everything you showed will make perfect scientific sense as well. Great stuff! I might also look at removing the lowest octave of the left hand when roots are struck in two octaves.

Great tips as always, Bob. I used to have to chop off the left hand of my great piano playing brother in the studio because it ate up all the audio spectrum. Nowadays i use EZkeys and can get the same problem. I often thin out the MIDI and roll off the bass notes and then EQ the bass, add some exciter and a smidge of distortion. Also use your octave trick sometimes. Sounds like Maca on his Hoffner. John hated that sound, lol.

Video request I guess: I’d like to include acoustic guitars in my rock arrangements, but I never know which part should be acoustic, which should be clean electric or which should be dirty. Is there a “standard” way of doing this?

I have all toontracks’ instruments. It’s nothing but love baby! Ez keys 2 is a marvel … 1 was ok but …. Musical content and playing pretty limited. Thrilled with 2. I like the sound of that Hofner a lot. Next purchase. Not nuts about the precision but never cared much for that bass. I prefer the jazz. God bless these guys. Freaking geniuses. Great video Bobby. 👍 you’re a gas buddy!

also depends on the players if they know what clashes or what to play i here those notes clashing i would tell them to play notes that would it clash with the other notes but great way to fix them

Yes hiring players with good ears and also soloing up things before they leave the studio to listen for problems is huge..

Frequency pumping is long known issue well known from all those playing in bands... It's unlikely to happen when you work with real musicians as they will consider there's smth wrong and try smth else... I only trust my Leduc basses and my tube amp with 1x18"+2x10" Electrovoice speakers when it comes to low end: no need for any plug-in.I know, Abe Laboriel owns 4 Leduc basses while I only own 3, but I'll consider more after working over a thousand albums

Do you find this worse with people phoning-in parts for collabs? In my limited experience people don't discuss these details ahead of time and because they feel they've each recorded a final version no-one wants to re-record their part or ask other people to re-record theirs. As a result I've stopped doing online collabs.
@BobbyHuff
@BobbyHuff 10 месяцев назад
I don’t do very much of that but I could see how it would happen!

I disagree. If the bass plays the same notes as the piano, it sounds dull and predictable with no tension and release.
