What happened in the story of Jesus cleansing the ten lepers? What does it mean for us today?
Cleansing of the Ten Lepers Story Summary (Luke 17:11-19)
1. Ten men with a skin disease approached Jesus as he walked into a village between Samaria and Galilee.
2. They asked Jesus to have mercy on them.
3. Jesus told them to show themselves to a priest as lepers were to do according to the Old Testament after being healed.
4. The men left and were indeed healed, but only one of the ten came back to praise God and thank Jesus. He was a Samaritan, not a Jew like Jesus.
5. Upset that the others did not return, Jesus said to the Samaritan, "Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well."
The Meaning of the Ten Lepers Story
As you read the story of Jesus cleansing the Ten Lepers, ask yourself:
1. When I feel sick in spirit or body, am I willing to ask Jesus for help?
All ten lepers asked Jesus for mercy and all ten were healed. Jesus has the power to heal today. Whether you are sick and in pain or suffering from emotional struggles, turn to the Lord for help! He is ready to heal those with faith in him.
2. When good things happen to me, do I first thank and praise God?
Jesus praised the one Samaritan leper for coming back to praise and thank him. He probably felt unwelcome as a Samaritan when he returned. He didn't let that hold him back. He came and thanked Jesus and then Jesus praised him for his faith.
Even when the little things happen during your day, take some time to praise God and thank him for his many little gifts in life.
