Exactly!! I honestly hoped Cleo would at least get a redemption arc. She was very smart and like manipulative (but iconic like I love her). And in season 1 there was small hints of like why she was that way, first off her mom is an alcoholic and if I remember correctly in one episode she mentioned how her mom would throw things at her. She also mentions a lot of times how other men have like touched her and it’s kind of gray area bc she never mentions if she wanted to or not. ANYWAYS not trying to make this show deep. But I really hoped we would at least get redemption, she does have empathy for Joan but she also sees her as a rival for both Abe and JFK. I wished that in this season the friendship between Joan and Cleo would somehow develop. IMO Cleo shouldn’t be w either JFK or Abe. Idk I just was very disappointed in how they just made her a mean girl trope.

Many fans are too indulgent to portray the necessary nuances.

The best way they could have continued Clone High would be by satirizing modern-day teen dramas, such as Euphoria and Riverdale, with much more "realistic" storylines and tone. Overall, Season 2 isn't meant to be a continuation: it's a CLONE of itself: the first iteration was great, and nobody could live up to it, but the second version tries its hardest to continue it, losing what made it special in the first place.

The actual Frida in real life had a pretty depressing life. Thats why a lot of her work is self expression to her past and emotions. She didn't consider herself to be a surrealist even though the public did. But she did live a tragic life of constant illness with her and her family members.

As someone from Mexico, here a lot of people tend to devaluate frida and her art (most likely as a result of her over exposition) and I find that really sad. @@KnucklesxReala911 I still liked what they did with Topher though (up until the last minute). You gotta remember, these are new human beings that don't attain the memories of their clone parents and are only aware of them through others' means, so it makes sense if Topher was this super socially aware person that constantly has to bottle up his terribleness inside considering how critical people are of Colombus. It would've been funny if Frida, realizing that Topher was struggling to express himself, finds it in herself to help him since she's actually a good person. And then after making him comfortable enough to be himself - That's when they reveal that Topher's "true self" is to spout out the n-word (or something). To be the most edgy kid in the block. Except the person he's only not edgy with, and genuinely respects, was Frida, who now is in a dilemma for 'On one hand, I made this kid happy and genuinely respect me, on the other hand, he's an asshole'. That directly makes fun of the 'good girl fixes bad boy and turns him good' trope.

I.. actually don't know much about the background of Frida. What was happening there?
@thecollector4332
@thecollector4332 10 месяцев назад
@@sleeplessstudios7626 Frida Kahlo was born with several health issues, her childhood was filled with surgeries and she lived in isolation from other kids. Among other things, she suffered from polio. Which left lifelong sequels to her body. But the most damaging incident in her life happened when she was eighteen years old. She was traveling alongside her boyfriend in the bus when it was suddenly hit by a streetcar. The accident broke Frida’s spine in three parts, two of her ribs fractured, her pelvic bone fractured as well and her legs were also severely damaged. This accident (and the subsequent 20+ surgeries) left her immobilized for months, and that was what motivated her getting into painting. She often painted self portraits that depicted her broken state. The accident (combined with her medical issues) also meant she could never have kids, which was something she desperately wanted. Her being unable to conceive children and the various abortions she had left her with a horrible depression (and this was also something that was reflected often in her work). She later got married to Diego Rivera (one of Mexico’s most important muralists). The marriage had several highs and lows, the lowest low being when Diego had an affair with Frida’s sister. Which led her to have several affairs with both men and women (she even had a relationship with Trotski when he was exiled in Mexico). They divorced and remarried (with an agreement of living together but without having sex) The last tragic incident in her life happened when they had to amputate her leg due to a gangrene infection. This incident left her bound to a wheelchair and gave her a terrible depression. She tried to commit suicide multiple times. She eventually died at age 47 from a pulmonary embolism. This is skipping all her art career and political activism of course, but this brief recap of her life may give you an idea as to how tragic and depressing Frida’s life was.

Honest to god, when I first saw Harriet Tubman, I thought she was supposed to be Madam CJ Walker (known for revolutionizing black hair care). And that was because of her pink hair. Funnily enough I immediately knew who Confucius was because they already had Genghis Khan from Season 1. There weren’t exactly a lot of influential, universally known Asian figures known to Western audiences.

They would have had way more comedic value if they would have gone with a Chairman Mao Zedong clone instead. Given he was a horrible historical figure and the father of the modern Chinese Communist Party/PRC especially with China’s rise to major world power in the last 20 years. He could have either subverted expectations by being anti Xi Jingping/modern China or leaned into his dictatorial “clone dad” and been used as a series antagonist. Confucius is such a lame historical figure to satirize. There’s nothing obvious there to poke fun at. Or they could have at least made him an overbearing teacher character who thinks they’re way more wise then they actually are constantly peppering in flowery poetic sayings that ultimately mean nothing or don’t have a place in modern society. The character they ended up with is so unbelievably lazy.
@munromister777
@munromister777 11 месяцев назад
Honestly, making Confucius shouldn't actually be that hard. He was a very strict traditionalist that cared about rules. You either make his clone exactly that, caring about the rules, family, and how people around him act (basically a stickler type kind of like Randall from Recess) or you do the opposite and make him the most chill and easy going person to give his clone father the middle finger.
@NEETKitten
@NEETKitten 8 месяцев назад
Honestly I could see his character working mostly as-is, but with just a few tweaks. He could want the same recognition that his clone parent got, but completely fail to understand WHY he was so revered in the first place. He could be smart, but completely socially inept. Thinking that he's every bit as wise as his clone parent, but also making the assumption that intelligence and wisdom are the same thing. So every attempt he makes to gain clout and fame through his "wisdom" falls completely flat on its face because his ego gets in the way of realizing that he has no idea how people actually work and thus, he gives the exact opposite message he was trying to get across.

For the segment of the video talking about Harriet Tubman, I was thinking that maybe due to her controlling the underground railroads, the writers could have used that to make her character secretive and stealthy, making her sneak around corners rather than walking like a normal student and be less talkative with her only hanging around a select group of friends, this mainly being Confucius and Frida, while growing to tolerate the rest of the main cast like Joan & JFK and maybe even writing an interesting dynamic between Harriet and Abe, since they played big parts in the history of slavery in America.

Both extremes can get exhausting in opposite ways. It's tiring to be cynical all the time and you start to crave sincerity, but the whole "everybody gets a journey, everyone needs a character arc, we need to make a moral statement and send a message that's relevant to today's youth!" thing is seriously emotionally exhausting and obnoxious. In season 1 it was their love over Abe and how Cleo had him but was not really into him (until the final episode of the first season) while Joan wanted him for the hole season (until the season finale of the first season) and because of this Joan found Cleo ungrateful for Abe's love. Other than that they had no reason to interact with each other and they would not have a problem. You could say that Joan was jealous of Cleo but that jealousy was mainly because Cleo had Abe. But in the "second season" (reboot) the reason is that they just did not like each other and blamed it on the writing of the first season, which basically takes away the funny part of their relationship and turns it into something that is just stupid. This basically means that Joan is just jealous of Cleo for no actual reason. Which takes away from the character depth they are trying to achieve.

They could've gone with making CH's Confucius actively rebelling against real life Confucius's trad Asian views basically, mirroring how the younger generation of Chinese people are actively rejecting the conservative values of their parents and elders, but man I'm bummed out they didn't go that route for him

Gosh, I really hated all the diss on Abe. I'm gonna gatekeep for a minute and just say that came from everyone that did not grow up with all the melodramas back in the 90's and early 2000's. Abe was never neglectful towards Joan. In fact, he was one of her very best friends that supported her genuinely. The joke with him is that he was oblivious to not only her feelings for him but to everything around him. You were suppose to laugh at how her obvious flirting flew over his head, not take it seriously. None of the characters were suppose to be taken seriously. That was the entire purpose of the show to make fun of teen dramas during that time. I guess because so many people confuse meta humor with satire these days thinking it's both the same and it's not. Satire makes fun of topics or shows while meta humor just have the characters be aware of the show or tropes they're in. And I hate to say it but I just think that the creators just grown out of this type of humor with how much they've learn and grown from other projects that they can't recreate the reason why Clone High had its edge.

I never heard of Clone High before 2020. Even with all the YTPMV use of Gandhi's "Say What" line back in 2010, which I saw a lot of, it never hit me that clone high existed. That being said, every time someone mentions that they unironically hate Abe for being a simp, I roll my eyes. 1. How can someone take this show so emotionally seriously? It's a parody, not a drama. I understand loving a show, but it's treated like it's all serious. 2. Let's just actually treat Clone High seriously for a second and forget it's actually a parody. What is keeping me from seeing Joan as a simp? At least Abe had a relationship with Cleo. Joan got fucking nothing and yet she was still chasing after him. Is it cause she's sincere? Isn't Abe sincere to Cleo? It really feels if you take it seriously for a moment, Joan and Abe would both be simps, yet only Abe gets that label cause.... why? 3. So... we're taking this shit seriously so Abe can't possibly be this ignorant... OK... Abe is just ignoring Joan's love advances... OK, that's his choice. Why does Abe HAVE to be with Joan? What if he wasn't into her that way? Doesn't that matter? It feels really hypocritical that Abe has to love Joan just because... What if someone made that same argument with Abe and Cleo? Nobody would take that argument seriously. I'm honestly not shocked Clone High's second season failed as it came from a misunderstanding from the writers in the first place. It only takes a scroll from the RU-vid comments of one of those compilation videos to know that the people watching have no idea this was always meant to be a parody. I don't like gatekeeping people from liking a show, but at some point, you can't keep the gates open to just EVERYONE. Cause then shit like this happens.

Yea, I don't care about what some idiot with an opinion thinks about my opinion making me look like an idiot (I'm not referring to you). If people are gonna warp something I love into garbage, I'm gonna die on that hill defending what I love. What you're advocating for (intentional or not) is for the surrender of my thoughts to the masses and agree with the people just because of numbers. If people took an anti-war message and started warping it into a pro-war message, would you still use that argument to not gate keep an artistic message? I don't really care what it makes me look like, I care about the truth. Not to mention, this video is a form of gatekeeping, even if Just Stop doesn't want to admit it. It's making sure people understand what makes the show great and that other people's takes on it are not good. Gatekeeping isn't exclusively saying someone can't enjoy something. It can also mean preserving what makes something great and ensuring others do the same as well. Like I said, I hate telling people they can't like something, but I'm not just going to let people say things I believe to be untrue leave them untested, like Season 2 being good, or even just OK. "Gatekeeping would not have prevented that." Again, don't care. It's the ethics involved in preserving something, not about it's effectiveness. Once again, I'd rather die on a hill defending what I love, then just surrendering my thoughts to whatever the majority says. People can have their thoughts on something, but I can still say they're wrong and explain why. Holding the majority opinion doesn't make one right.

Also having abe start off saying stuff he has never said before in the first season just to show that "times have changed and certain things aren't acceptable" was so awful and out of character. If anything jfk should of been the one to fit that role due to how he treats women (besides how he treated joan to an extent since he did seem to genuinely connect with her but in season 2 it felt so forced and not like they had actually bonded.) Legitimately, who the fuck was in charge for designing Harriet Tubman? I didn’t even know it was supposed to be HT until it was stated. Why is her hair pink? My theory is that they wanted an African American in the main cast, made one, and used the first female Afro American historical figure they could find.

I noticed that the side characters almost never get to do anything in this season. Unless their names are George Washington Carver or Sacagewea, then the writers use them literally every time they need extra clones for something. But even they don't get to have personalities.
