Just met Gail Devers at the US Olympic marathon trials in Atlanta 2 months ago. She was running a half/marathon and spoke at a pre race meeting. Wonderful person, full of happiness.
And she wasn’t favourite for this race but thankfully she won because of her hurdles race which she fell in I was heart broken at the time loved Gail ❤️❤️❤️☘️🇺🇸
Always thought Merlene Ottey was the most beautiful woman in sports. And she continued sprinting at a world-class level into her 50s. Just unbelievable.
Randy Evermore she was spectacular. But she wasn’t “world-class level” in her 50s. I think she was breaking age-group records. But not among the elite anymore.
5 women under 10.90, and with a negative -1.0 wind! Only other time it happened was in 2012. Amazing fact that Gail Devers won 2 olympic golds in the 100m, but 0 in her favorite event, not even a bronze!
@@henrylister5530 I think it is referring to the fact that 5 runners were within a stride, that’s why is said the closest 100m final because over half the race was within a stride
Please show one of the most exciting women's football matches ever played in the Olympics between USA and Canada in the 2012 London Olympics semi-final match. Several of the matches of women's soccer from 2012 are already posted on the Olympic channel, but this match has not been posted. It was an intense, back-and-forth nail biter, truly a classic match in women's football history. Thank you.
@@Hever73 I don't think Jamaica have had a more complete sprinter over the two shorter sprints. If you know what I mean? Basically she was world class over both sprints & was always capable of medalling in both. Which she did in Barcelona 1992 Olympics with two silvers.
She really only peaked for a short period of time, in 1992. Was usually injured. After her injury at these Olympics in the relay, she was never really the same.
That had to be one of the closest 100 m races in history with the middle 5 women all coming within a half stride of each other while crossing the finish line.
Merlene Ottey is one of my all time favorite runners, but her performances were sometimes rather strange. At the major events when you think she would win, she would provide a subpar performance.
A great bunch of 1990's talent right there! Many of those same finalists would go on to contest the next Olympic final four years later in Atlanta, which Devers would win very narrowly again at the expense of the great Merlene Ottey, arguably the greatest female sprinter never to have won an Olympic Gold. After Atlanta, Irina Privalova, realizing that she'd never be able to beat Devers in the 100m, went on to retrain for the 400m, for which she won gold at the Sydney 2000 OIympics!
A few errors: Privalova moved to the 400mh not the open 400m. She didn't switch because she realized she'd never be able to beat Devers in the 100m. By then, Devers was long gone, Privalova ran 10.83 as late as 1998, but she suffered from a lot of injuries training for sprints and thus moved up. Plus there was Marion Jones.
If you freeze it at 5:40 Ottey looks so much farther behind Torrence than Torrence looks behind Privalova, but both differences in time are .02. I consider this the best womens 100m race of all time in an Olympic or World Championship final based on the blazing times and the razor-thin margins between the top 5 ladies (all well under 11:00).
Liliana Allen Doll ❤ ... una gran inspiración para muchos atletas juveniles en México, te respeto & con mucho cariño te recordamos en el Estadio Olímpico de Tabasco... DTB amiga
These were the golden years of women track and field. The rivalry among Ottey, Devers, Torrence, and Privalova were legendary. There was no love lost among them because winning was the gold. And despite what they may have said about each other, they definitely respected one another. These days don’t seem as exciting to me, perhaps because I am now a dinosaur! These women were amazing!
I have so much respect for Marilyn Otty. She was a very fine sprinter but her luck did not work in Big events like the Olympics. The opposite is Shally-ann, no matter the pace she lost in the normal season but in Big events, her luck makes her achieve peak form. Despite being Jeter in the top form from 2009 - 2012, Shally made all shocked in London 2012.
If Gail Deaver came in first I guess the white gal and 4 others came in first and three quarters. What a amazing race. I wish I could run even a little bit. It don't have to be far, I'll settle for twenty yards, I mean twenty feet.
Anybody, go to Wikipedia and notice how the site refers to Gail Devers as "he." Then they change to "her." I thought it was a [honest] mistake. But when I read further, they go back to make reference as "he." And this back and forth "he"-"she" continues all the way to the end. Anybody, what's your take on this?
diamonddog13 I love Gail Devers. Do you know if there was any suspicion about her taking any PED’s? I remember Gwen Torrence getting some flak for insinuating such after she lost in the 100m in Barcelona (but somewhat redeemed herself when she won the 200m).
Please to remember that Gail Devers passed her all her test while competing whereas Marlene Ottey had both her A and B samples show up positive for banned steroids.
