For me it's definitely clothes that "almost fit" as well as fabrics/materials that don't last. I totally agree about gold-plated jewellery, especially rings. For me, generally earrings and even bracelets can be ok as gold vermeil (which I think is better than just gold plated) but rings never last long if they're not solid gold. For clothing, I've been most disappointed with synthetics and viscose. I do have several viscose skirts/dresses and even a blouse that I really like because they're a bit higher quality, but in general the viscose blouses I've bought from cheaper stores simply haven't held up. Now I try to stick to cotton, merino wool, etc for most pieces.
@@lucombre yes viscose can be hit or miss, sometimes items are surprisingly good but other times they just don’t hold up. I’ve also started focusing more on natural fibers, I find that merino wool is especially durable and doesn’t pill as much as other types of wool
This video is a good reminder that not all lovely clothes are going to look good on me, or even suit me, if they are not my style. I've know this for many years, but it has taken a young lady with a sensible, logical message, to convince me of it. Thank you.
@@donmataciachenault9556 so glad you found this video helpful! It took me some time to learn that some clothes just don’t work for me! But better late than never! Thanks for watching!
In Denmark we have something called Christmas lunch. I buy a new dress for that occassion every year. It would typical be a party dress I can’t use in normal day wear- or even the year after because then its “nothing special”. I regret it every year that a buy a party dress and I don’t want to think and feel that way about repeating an outfit. This year I want to create an outfit with what I’ve already own and dress it up by adding accessories.
@@Lucy-ss2tz I completely understand where you’re coming from! I also try to do the same thing for special occasions. Adding the right accessories can totally transform an outfit and make it feel fresh
I totally get you! I always want to wear something new for the "Julefrokost" at work, but this year I might do a very similar look to last year - nobody probably remember anyway 😂
I recently bought an oversized short sleeved shirt just before going on holiday - I wore it once 🤦♀ It just too relaxed and casual for my style. Don't buy things for vacations that you won't wear at home!
Lots of good advice here. Gold plated jewelry is truly a waste of money. The plating fades, they tarnish, etc. I’ve been gradually building a collection of fine jewelry made of real gold, and it’s wonderful being able to wash my hands without having to remove my rings, I can occasionally hop in the shower without taking off my necklace, etc. Real gold pieces still require care, of course, and shouldn’t be abused, but with proper care they actually last and still look beautiful after years of use; the same cannot be said of plated jewelry. A couple of years ago I started cleansing my wardrobe of “fast fashion” pieces and synthetic fabrics. I own less clothing, but the quality and fit are better, they last longer, and they don’t look flimsy and cheap. It was a great decision.
Totally agree! Gold-plated jewelry is such a waste in the long run. I also started decluttering fast fashion and synthetic fabrics from my wardrobe a while back, and it’s been such a great decision. Having fewer, better-quality pieces that actually hold up over time just feels so much more rewarding!
I agree with you about the gold-plated jewelry. It got popular some years ago and was very alluring, due to the beautiful designs but, you're right - the plating wears off and the piece is no longer wearable. My mother (who was from Spain) would call anything that wasn't solid gold or silver "junk". 😅 I also agree with you about clothes that don't quite fit. It's easy to talk ourselves into a purchase when you love everything about a garment, then we don't wear it because the fit is not right. I am thoroughly enjoying your videos ! ❤
I totally agree with your mom, especially since in Spain, there are so many brands that produce solid gold pieces at reasonable prices. I guess it’s more of the standard here, which makes it even harder to justify gold-plated jewelry that won’t last. I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos! That means a lot! ❤
I am in the process of decluttering my closet and realized how many clothes I had purchased that were mostly made of all synthetic materials, a lot of the items were not that cheap either. I regret not looking at the labels more carefully. Now I look for clothes that are mostly cotton or linen or other natural fibers usually from thrift stores.
@@chrystallea7545 I get it, in the past I also had a lot of clothes made from synthetics, especially knitwear, and they didn’t age well. As you, now I stick to clothes that are mostly made from natural fibers
@@ana_paulav You're right. I tend to buy on the bigger side and take things in...but a too big jacket or shirt will gape at the collar and never look good unless you wear it open or have a scarf...too complicated. Too big pants can be altered or sometimes you just need a decent belt.
Feminine blouses for me too! I used to buy and even wear them a lot, but my style and preferences have changed and now I realized I just don't vibe with them anymore, so I am slowly selling/decluttering them. Other examples of items that I always regret buying are wide belts and knee length pants/skirts/dresses. I learned that I prefer either a mini length or a midi. Anything in between is a no-no for my body.
@@diana1833 right! I find wide belts difficult to style and same with the length of pants and dresses, I also avoid anything that visually cuts me at knee, they tend to be very unflattering on me and make me look shorter
@@ana_paulav Wide belts are difficult to wear if you're on the shorter side. I'm tall but short waisted and more angular so I have to watch a wide belt. I like wearing them on the hips, however. This makes me look more curvy. Hipster jeans also look good on me. I broke a rule recently and bought a white belt but it's thin and adjustable so I can wear it on the hips. Sometimes I like a sharp look like that to break it up.
I totally agree with you on gold plated jewellery, just a matter of time when it tarnishes so one has to be careful when using it and it does not give you the best feeling also most clothing other than from natural fabrics end up taking space and eventually decluttered with very little use...additionally that goes for most patterns as it is so hard to make an outfit out of them, thank you for sharing, always great motivation to rethink those mistakes to try harder to avoid them in the future 😇
@@Jo-armadillo right? And even if you are careful it still tarnishes - at least that was the case for me- I also find most patterns difficult to style, specially florals, I like them on dresses but not on other items cause then I struggle pairing them with the rest of my clothes
@@ana_paulav indeed patterns are easier on dresses but otherwise I came to the point when I start to understand why it was ``a full wardrobe and nothing to wear scenario all the time`` and decided to try to make my dressing process easier and not more complicated and your video is great motivation to declutter further! thank you Ana 🤩
Plated was always frowned upon by my mother. All of those horrible spoons with the black bottoms. Always left a horrible taste. Prefer stainless. I do realize this is about jewelry but once the plating is gone no amount of polish will bring it back.
@@TarahRice84 I get you! bulky sweaters can be difficult to style, since you can’t really tuck them in and wearing a jacket over them can also be difficult
@@dellenebecker4610 I totally get you and the worst part with shoes is that you never know if they will be comfortable until you really start wearing them. I once had a pair of Flattered sandals that kept giving me blisters even after wearing them more than 30 times!
I regret buying an ankle length maxi sundress. It is so hot in the summer even though it's 100% cotton. It looks like something to wear on a hot summer day with spaghetti straps, but so not for hot weather! Really, when else can one wear it??!?! I think I'll try to shorten to knee length.
This was a lovely video! Well done ❤ My biggest fails are buying knitwear that has sleeves that are too long as they can’t be altered reliably ☹️ I’m always disappointed when I miscalculate that! I too prefer a classic structured blazer, I love to pick them up gently used for a steal!
@@AreYouKittenMeRtNow I tend to have the opposite issue with sweaters and tops in general, sometimes the sleeves are too short for me 😅. And totally agree, going second hand is always a good idea! I’ve found some great items this way
Merino is long fibre and the sheep tend to be skinnier. Wool that comes from sheep that are bred for the meat tends to be more coarse. Merino superfine wool is fantastic quality and you can wear it in fabric form, even in warmer weather it breathes. PS It's called pilling not peeling...
@@christinaorciari343 I’ve been there too! I used to buy extremely oversize sweaters that did not flatter me at all and I ended up giving them away. It’s all about trial and error, I guess
@@ktrudy1 I’ve had good experiences with sweaters made from 100% merino wool. They tend to be more durable and pill less than more delicate fabrics like cashmere. Look for a tight weave and make sure it’s not too thin. Sézane and Comptoir des Cotonniers offer some great options.
Ah too bad about the Sezane sweater, it really is lovely but if you can' wear there is no point in owning it. The RL sweater looks so nice on you love the color and the cut, such a shame it pills. Yes if blazers are too thin it kind of defeats the purpose. I bought a pair of pre-loved paper bag jeans without trying them on, they were only $8 but when I did put them on I saw myself in the mirror I was like yikes! I decluttered it ASAP. Great discussion. 👍☺😍
Oh, the Sezane sweater! It's such a shame when something looks great but isn't practical. And I agree about the RL sweater-the pilling is such a letdown, especially for the price. I’ve also had my share of impulse buys that went straight to the declutter pile😅. Thanks for sharing, it's always fun to chat about these experiences ❤
I regret the overly feminine blouses I have. They look fine enough, but I feel like I'm an imposter wearing a costume. Like a man in a dress, I suppose. I only bought them to fit into office culture but I feel kind of gross in them. Holiday sweaters, no matter how tasteful, are also a never-again. It doesnt matter how cute they are if they can only be worn a few weeks out of the year. They just take up closet space. Shoes with pointed toes. I've decided I'm not a masochist and no longer need to mangle my toes. I miss them though....they look so nice.... I also try to avoid mid rise pants. I am so done with pants that sit at (or near) the widest part of my hips and will therefore still sag even if I wear a belt. And that's not to even mention the muffin tops they create on many healthy-weight women. I want pants that suit my hourglass-ish shape, and midrise is not it. Shirts made of synthetic fibers. Since I ditched them, I no longer have to wear deodorant. I figure I've saved at least $100 so far.
It’s funny you mention feeling like an impostor in feminine blouses, I totally get that too. I feel way more comfortable in a simple button-up shirt, much more "me." And synthetic fibers in everyday wear? Not my thing either. I used to have a lot of acrylic sweaters, but I decluttered them because they aged badly, lost their shape, and held onto odors, like you said.
4:59 Since when is pilling not a sign of bad quality? Is that true? I feel like in the past, things didn’t pill that much and I have always thought it’s a sign of bad quality. Am I wrong?
@@leastidyworld4365 From what I’ve read it seems that pilling is normal to a certain extent and not necessarily an indicator of bad quality. However if a knit is made using short and thin fibers, it will be more prone to pilling, which seems to be the case for this sweater. So to me it does seem to be an indicator of bad quality in this particular case 😕
Pilling is definitely a sign of poor quality! It indeed happens from short fibres, from the part of the sheep that is inferior such as the belly or underside, or just from poor quality wool to begin with. Long fibres are far superior. I never buy cheap blazers they just look awful. This is especially the case if you're slim because you're relying on the cut of the blazer to give you shape. You can buy them on sale or out of season, and buying one good classic blazer is worth more than many cheap ones. You can get away with a cheaper shirt but not a cheap blazer! IMO. Another thing you can regret is buying a cheap belt or cheap shoes. They are what draws the eye so they better be at least decent and be comfortable. Also cheap knits often don't keep their colour they run in the wash or with hand washing. This is awful and the combination with pilling? Just don't do it. I totally agree on the gold plated jewellery. However if the item is simple, not a chain for instance, you may be able to get it re-plated. Overall it's a mistake trying to keep up with trends with gold plated jewellery, it looks cheap. I forgot to add, you can wear a ruffled blouse if you pair it with something edgy. Like a sharp jacket, or pants which are more masculine looking. I have for instance a pair of camouflage pants that are super casual and it tones down the girly factor, and add plain unfussy shoes or trainers. Or I have a military style jacket it goes very well with a frilly shirt. The contrast is what makes it work and you don't feel silly. Great content keep it up!
@@deborahcurtis1385 totally agree! Cheap blazers are the worst, I will follow your advice and try to get a good one on sale. I’ve been eyeing the blazers from The Curated for ages, maybe this will be the year I finally get one 🤞And I like the idea of pairing a feminine blouse with something edgy, will definitely try it :)
@@mimosverden114 wool can be itchy, thought I’ve found that most knits made from merino wool or cashmere don’t irritate my skin. Cotton is also a great option for knits! And I get you, blazers can be overwhelming some times
