Your video is the only one that accurately expresses the heartbreaking emotions of the song's lyrics, “I'm cold,” “I don't want to wake up,” and “I want to die”. Most excellent.

I do believe this is what is what Henry Purcell would have heard in his day. It's an 'acting' voice, a mix of raw chest voice with falsetto, switching between the two when required. Also a great characterful face!
@mamascarlatti

Yes it's very interesting and affecting, I have heard Andras Scholl sing this in pure countertenor which is very beautiful, but this approach is very striking and emotional.
@Kiltedbear
@Kiltedbear 4 месяца назад
Except for the original sheet music as written is sung an octave lower. It was Klaus Nomi that popularised the counter tenor interpretation of this piece, but it's supposed to be sung by a bass.

As a backwoods hillbilly, secretly a voracious consumer of art, beauty and music, and when it can be found, a delicious stew of all 3, I was warmed by this. It's 9 degrees in my house and there is ice on my windows inside. I'm quite comfortable under my quilts as I seek the glowing embers that kindle inner warmth such as this. Would enjoy him singing Arvo Parts heart in the Highlands.

Really didn't know what to expect when the singer sang from the sitting position, but the position, with the lyrics in mind, "what power, who from below has made me rise" fits perfectly and reinforces the singers plea. Bouleversant. Merci.

In both Purcell's compositional gymnastics and the athletic performance by Gérard Lesne here lend incredible muscle and blistering intelligence to an unassuming melodic structure, empowered otherwise only by the harmonic crescendo. I love this accomplishment and salute the musicians! Fantastic recording that I will save and savor for the future.
