The Cold Reality Homelessness, Frostbite, and the Fight to Survive

Giancarlo's got his makeshift bed rolled out on a Manchester, New Hampshire sidewalk, calling it a night. Four months without a roof over his head, and it's just... rough. Seeing folks tucking into their sidewalk beds hits you hard. We're in the richest country on Earth, yet here we are, millions without a proper place to sleep because housing's just too out of reach.
So, Giancarlo's looking for some white socks. Funny thing, I used to carry both black and white, but it turns out that white is in higher demand. He says black socks make your feet sweat more. And get this - sweating in the cold can be super dangerous. People might doze off, especially if they've had a bit to drink, and next thing you know, they're losing toes or worse to frostbite because of the sweat.
Just three days back, Giancarlo told me about this guy, another soul without a home, who froze to death. It's the same tragic news every winter - someone didn't make it through the cold. And in the summer? It's the heat claiming lives. And what changes? Seems like nothing much, except the numbers just keep getting worse.
Giancarlo's also pointing out how insane rent's gotten, even in smaller towns like Manchester. The squeeze is real everywhere; even rooming houses and single-room occupancies are raising their prices.
Here's where we step in. It's on us to get loud, reach out to our lawmakers, and demand some real action on affordable housing and homelessness. It's a big ask, but hey, if not us, then who?

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Nothing that uses the labor and resources of another human being is a human right. You can’t demand a house because it had to be built and paid for. Time and energy is all we have you no justification to steal it from anyone if they are a blue collar tradesman.

@@Lunchladydoyle I feel like you should tell that to the pro-life people, who think that an embryo has the right to a woman's body (her resources as well as labor). If people can fight so hard for something that's not a full person yet, why is it so hard to fight for those already born? And actually, you *do* have a right to other people's labor and resources. That's what our economy is based on. Other people build houses, other people put in infrastructure, other people cook food, etc. and yet we benefit from their hard work. Your argument becomes moot when you realize that that is what our economy runs on.

My personal opinion about anyone left to sleep out in the cold, I don't know how you do it, basically I don't think its really humanly possible, but people do it! Homeless are seen in every city in this nation in extremely frigid conditions trying to sleep, even cave men had shelter. I know that God has to be looking over them and loving them, He loves all the poor and disabled. To me it would be a miracle if I survived 1 night out there let alone living out there 24/7.

I live in NH and this video is VERY sobering!! It can happen literally in a day to anyone, no matter how rich they are - there's always a reason not thought of.

The best part was when he said it's good to have Jesus in your life. Receiving the atoning sacrifice of Jesus opens the door to heaven. Eternity is long. Jesus is the key. Yes, life is hard. I've been in constant pain for 34 years. We live in an evil world. God did not promise peace and prosperity in this life but He does promise an eternal home with Him through the sacrifice of His Son. But this acceptance is proactive on our part. No one will be grandfathered into heaven because of what they've suffered in this life. I long for heaven. It will be much greater because of what i've endured in this life. Even so, Lord Jesus, come! John 3 16-21.

I lived in downtown Manchester for a while. I saw homeless people hug each other under a tarp all night during a blizzard. They're often young with serious mental health problems. This is a small city where landlords have jacked up rents to where only the most successful can afford a place to live. Shanty towns keep popping up.

So, if you are not successful --you often times have mental illness, you are a psychologist and you examined all homeless in the area to come to your conclusion?

New Hampshire and the rest of the Yankee States are very expensive to live in, besides being homeless and extremely harsh cold winters, migrate South a lil bit. Best of luck you y’all!

I was homeless myself for 4 years so I understand where that man is coming from. It is really tough. I almost didnt make it when it became winter months here in canada. But had my share of generous people helping me out with food, giving me money. Heck, I still remember to this day when I was walking around downtown Toronto just killing the day away until the shelter would open and was waiting for the crosswalk light to turn and some man walked up beside me and waited too, he glanced at me and went into his pocket and gave me some money to go get food! He told me he knows what its like and he could tell somehow I was homeless and I thanked him so much for it and he nodded and continued on. Because not every homeless person has to look dirty, wearing tattered clothing, I was moderately dressed but for some reason he knew.

People think Homelessness can never happen to them. Some people think because they make $200,000 a year and $600,000 a year and more, they can never become homeless. They're wrong. It can happen to anybody regardless of how much they make, what their quality of life is, their education, and everything else. Don't look and judge those who are homeless. The majority of them are homeless. Most are homeless due to things that were outside of their control. Job loss, mental illness, divorce, workplace injury, chronic illness, drug addiction, criminal lifestyle, loss of apartment/house, and many more factors. Be respectful of the homeless.

New Hampshire is a very expensive place to live now, our property taxes are super high! But rich people love no sales taxes or income taxes even if you have a job you might still be homeless.

Struggling to keep the roof over my head . On really cold nights I cant afford heat I pray for the homeless on the streets because if I am cold with no heat inside I know they are even colder. In the summer I freeze the free water bottles I get from the food pantry and give them to the homeless. I dont have much to share but I can share that.

Matthew 25:34-40 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
