Just drop the high E string down one half-step to Eb (D#) for this simple tuning that changes everything!

*NOTE* - The ACTUAL Tuning on the song is EABGBD# with the high E tuned down a half-step and the D string tuned down to B.
The point of the tuning in this video is that this tuning is cool to write with and play with and is super simple.

The tuning for 'Yellow' is EABGBD#. The chords are 1. 797800 2. 797900 3. 244320 4. 020100 All chords with fretted notes on the 6th string are fretted with your thumb Same tuning for 'Shiver', 'High Speed', 'Parachutes', and 'Trouble'

Changing from 1 to 2 looks incredibly awkward. What, are you sliding your pinky up that half step? Tom's tuning makes a lot more sense at least in regards to those first two voicings. I think I saw another channel promoting this tuning, but I think I prefer Tom's version... without actually sitting down and trying it.... which I'll do tonight.

That's why I put "Coldplay" in quotes because it's reminiscent of the tuning from Yellow and very easy to tune to quickly. I'm sorry that I didn't make it clearer. The point of the video is more for creating and writing and not for copying.

In 30+ years in the music business I've never heard it called that before. Makes sense though. B4 is much faster to write though.

wrap your thumb around the fretboard and it'll be easier, I've been doing that for years since I found out about Coldplay's tuning, especially for the scientist EADGCF.

Great lesson. I love sharing this tuning with my own students. I’ll often start with a similar thing in standard tuning in the key of E (barre grips with open strings 1 and 2) and then move to B with the altered tuning and show them how to play Yellow.

I actually discovered this tuning on my own, but it's cool to see other people us it too! When I play the G#m, I just mute the G string because it's the same as the open B string.

Your Gibson Dove is my dream acoustic. I have owned several mid to high end maple dreds and 000's, the Dove has eluded me as my ultimate Gibson acoustic. No doubt in my mind that the notes coming of that soundboard are more articulate and resonant. These maples are the best of the best for recording. Although, I wouldn't mind hearing a Bluegrass tune with an old Martin D-18 and your Gibson Dove playing together... hmmmmm, yummy. Isn't there a song called My D-18

I have to say I'm glad I found your Channel. it's it has open me up to alternate tunings that I often wondered about. This tuning is different than Yellow's tuning. I just like messing with it for writing and it reminds me of Yellow. The Yellow tuning is EABGBD# I believe.

Little correction! The D string is tuned down to B, and because of that, chords are played differently :)

Before I go on with these weird tunings, I always detune my guitar down a few steps first then I'll apply a capo later on so as to avoid breaking some strings. lol

Yes, this is a tuning I've used a lot. I love the Major 7th sound. Just for a little trivia. Major 7th chords always sound good on a 4 chord in any major key. In the key of B, an E chord is a 4 chord. In G it would be C. In A in would be D etc.

This tuning does a pretty good job and being able to play the tune. I used to play this song live a lot and just dropping the high E down to D# is a very easy way to get the effect. But the real tuning is also detuning the D down to a B. The only time it's really apparent is on the outro to the song. The 2nd to last chord can only be played in EABGBD#. It is voiced 2X2201 and you can't really replicate it unless you tune your D down to B.

I wouldnt call it E 7, i think it's, in the case of yellow, a normal B - F# - E progression with B as a drone

The D# is on top droning as well affecting the tonality of both the E and F# chord. The D# is the major 7th of the E chord and the 6th of the F# chord.
