Yeah, I completely understand. I get it that they have to raise prices due to increased shipping costs, but a 22% increase is crazy! It’s still only $6-$8 to press a single LP, and $12-$15 to press a double LP.

@@TheVinylDen And they have to buy insurance, pay for materials, pay rent for the building, factory maintenance/repairs, property taxes, utilities/heating/ac, packaging materials, and they have EPA fees for waste material. That's just some of the expenses on top of what it costs to press records. You've obviously never run a manufacturing plant.

It feels like the whole vinyl market is topping out, people have had enough of the cost and the shine is wearing off. I can see a lot of people start selling their collections and the 2nd hand market get flooded with all these coloured artificially limited reissues that have been pressed over the last 5 to 10 years. Kind of like in the 90s when the sports card market was flooded and after the fad died off the prices crashed.

I've been a monthly subscriber since March. I joined as I saw several country albums I wanted that were released as VMP exclusives. As for the price increase I'm gonna hang on till the end of the year to see what they offer in the rock & country genres. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt to offer us something worthwhile to stay on. I do like the quality of their product. I've never had any problems with every record I've received. That's another reason why I'll remain for now. We'll see what comes!

I started my membership with Vinyl Me Please back in April 2016. There was just the record of the month. A 12'' print. A white J-Card with a cocktail recipe, on the front was the initials of the person who packaged your record. That was a nice personal touch. Words by Tyler Barstow. Changes were being made quite a bit during my whole time as a member . Not for the better mind you, until I stopped my membership in the fall of 2020. It was a slow decline from year to year in my opinion. From delays, customer service, pricing, packaging changes, etc. Small things add up. Looking back, it started for me after they got rid of the white J card. I liked the simplicity of it. A drink recipe, a print, and of course the music. Sitting back sipping on a drink that you made just for that/this moment, spinning a record without a care in that moment. Simple. As time went on, It started to feel more of I had to chose what I wanted. I liked not having to think about the record. Just had to know if I had a copy of that record of the month. That's what worked. Once they got away from that, having to choose a genre. It became to busy. More like a chore. That's what I didn't want. That's what I really enjoyed in the beginning. They stopped doing what worked, and it didn't work for me. So I ended my membership. Have a good day all, and happy ears.

I'm glad I have ZERO clue as to what any of this is. I buy what I want, from where I want, and I don't need to be conned into a "subscription" to build my collection. You really think they were doing YOU a favor with this ???
@TheVinylDen
@TheVinylDen 4 дня назад
No, they are a business, but they do reissue some long out of print releases and do a great job with them. What separates VMP from other subscription services is that you aren’t locked into a specific release. Every month there’s at least 10-12 albums to pick from, any of their older releases/ reissues, or there’s always a store credit option that can be used on any future purchase.

I bought Nick Cave's The Boatman's Call from them (clear red etc) I love this record. I really hope they pull it off and can keep offering this stuff. It's good for all of us. The sub prices are too much for me but I will keep buying records from them. I keep looking at their T. Rex album...maybe soon.

Overpriced-- and not worth it for the common normie titles that most people already have. Alot of the titles are good for people who own 50 records or are just starting out collecting I guess... I ran into the issue of already having, or not being interested in anything they had to offer. Forcing you to save up a credit, or tricking you into the "might as well get this one" mentality... Ended up selling more than 75% of the ones I received from them. I also dont buy stupid colored splattered vinyl.

When it comes to music subscriptions, I think I'll just wait for the return of the Columbia Music Club, I even have a shiny new penny in my sock drawer. I believe that the pricing for vinyl records are getting to the point of being riddiculous. I really prefer to listen to music on vinyl, and I don't mind paying a fair price to help fund the machine but I can also stream the same music for free. I do have some VMP records that I bought from my local record store that was used, but in excellent condition, and they are good pressings, but I also have bills to pay, and inflation is causing the price of allot of essential products and services to go up. Bills first, records later because again, I can stream the music in decent quality sound for free.

With them cutting services and drastically raising prices I really don’t see how they are going to survive more than a few more years. If they lose 30-50% of their subscribers I think they are going to have to keep raising prices just to keep the lights on.

I used to be a VMP member for several years with an annual sub and record cost around. $25 or less per month. When they jacked up prices a couple years ago I stopped but still occasionally bought a new record from them Ala carte. To commit to & pre-pay almost $50 a record for 12 months It is just too much! I was in Classics & Country tracks mostly but Rock would have been nice. And those going too… I almost rejoined with free 8 records deal but never did! Sad to see them gone too.

@TheSkuncle

You nailed it. I have been a subscriber since 2019 and when I heard the rock and country tracks were being dropped I wasn’t happy about that since nearly everything I’ve gotten is from those two tracks. But then I think it was the last two quarters of this year I only bought two albums. Got store credit for the others. I just re-upped for the next three months, but depending on what this quarter has I may cancel. Then came the cost increase. Now it is entirely dependent on what this quarter has in store. To keep subscribers they may need to start listing what’s coming down the road. Last year they launched the Vinyl Me Parton line, they listed what all 12 albums would be. You knew going into it what you’d be getting. They did a great job with those titles, however the albums sounded great, the artwork on some of the albums was terrible. Low resolution and washed out colors. The original CD covers looked much better. In a few cases they didn’t include the original liner notes, which was unfortunate. So, I may drop them as well. If they have a great quarter planned I may stick around, but otherwise I’m out.

Hey Nick. I have only been with VMP since March, but will probably cancel my annual subscription when it expires. I completely understand why they need to increase prices, but that is a catch 22. As you indicated, the costs of production, licensing and increased shipping costs won't be offset by the increased subscription rates with a significant decline in subscribers. The other piece for me is that they have shifted some of that pressing backlog to GZ Media, which I find to be substandard when it comes to surface noise.
@SpyderTracks
@SpyderTracks 3 дня назад
I live in the UK, have never subscribed, but have collected a few anthology boxes and individual albums over the last few years. I haven’t bought for a while exactly because the prices are just getting extreme, specifically the Diary Of Alicia Keys 20th anniversary which did look awesome, but it was insanely expensive and just couldn’t justify it. I have one pre order outstanding for the Footloose anniversary copy, but I’ve just not been interested in anything for a while now. It is a shame because as you say, the quality of the overall product was very good, but they were often surpassing a tone poet or AP45 cost, and there’s no way they garner that level just yet. Their anthology boxes were so clever because they appealed to me not knowing anything about that genre, I just wanted to discover the set, with the included booklets and podcasts it really made it an experience over just the individual albums. I think they are some of the best box sets on the market. Plus as far as I see it, VMP were responsible working with GZ in bringing coloured vinyl formulation and quality in line with black vinyl, before them, the product always had a questionable noise floor, nowadays it really is on par most of the time.

Oh well, vinyl seems to be dying. My local record stores are receiving so many collections. Just a year ago the shelves were half full and now you can't scroll thru without taking a portion out and setting them aside. The prices are also getting atrocious. Used records that are able to be found anywhere and everywhere shouldn't be 9.99-19.99 or more. Used Simon and Garfunkel all ringleader or light marks on disc should be no more than $2.99 but they are not. I feel record stores are pushing the customer away by increasing the prices so much. New vinyl is a different topic. Although $50 for an album is too much, the costs of goods, manufacturing, distributing all is a factor. I just won't pay it. Vinyl me,please had some good titles and I do have three of them but really nothing I was totally excited about. So with their collapse it's kinda clear why. But I see the collapse in record stores happening within the next couple years. It feels the fad is dying and even Target seems to be pushing titles out. They put about 25 titles on clearance last month of albums that were released this year. And most were as cheap as $7. They lost the money, yet why continue carrying something that isn't profitable anymore.

I cancelled a few months ago after building up a ton of store credit as a result of several months with nothing that interested me. Before I cancelled my subscription, I used that store credit to pre-order the Grateful Dead box set. If that never comes to fruition, I'll be extra salty because I can't even raise a claim with my credit card company as the majority of the set was paid for with store credit. Best case scenario if that occurs, is that my store credit is returned to me and I can use it on records I don't really want. Worst case scenario is that I'm already screwed.

The international price was something like $150 more than domestic per year, and they probably had shipping contracts that meant that that covered the price they were paying to ship to international customers. I would guess it would be the cost of replacements for lost and damaged shipments, as well as the additional paperwork requirements for international shipping that was the reason for them removing the option. Overall though they would not have been offering it at all if they hadn’t been making the same kind of money on them that they were for domestic customers. These kinds of companies aren’t naturally benevolent 😅

VMP never made sense as a Canadian on the East Coast. In addition to their regular subscription, they added an extra cost for Canadian members, then tack on shipping, duty, potentially brokerages fees, so it was no point. I use the Shop App a lot and I can actually buy individual albums from them with no membership costs, but the titles are not the best ones. It looks like a great quality product but I own zero of their titles. Cheers

When people stop getting what they want, they get told they'll get a $15 credit if they choose something else when they're expecting something already, and when last but not least a company has no customer service to speak of, they usually fail. It's too bad and I hope they can pull it together. But if they don't get some sort of customer service (that's not using Discord) they'll never really have a chance in my opinion. There's a lot of other ways they operate that have been upsetting people too but I've been hearing about. With the credits a customer gets and builds up get as they choose not to get an album that month, the credits don't really equal out to what they sound like. And customers are limited to how they can use their credit and where they can use it. When you have to pay full price or buy a higher priced item to be able to use the credit, that just isn't good. I’ve had a couple of releases this year that they’ve oversold, and have offered me additional store credit if I would swap to something else. I guess the writing has been on the wall that they’ve been in trouble for some time now.

VMP is so desperate for cashflow, they've offered nearly their entire catalog to retail stores through distribution. They're toast.

The person that owns this channel is a con artist. DO NOT GIVE HIM YOUR BANK DETAILS. He knows nothing about vinyl and is sucking in people who themselves know nothing about vinyl. I do feel for those. I am going to ask YT to cancel this individuals channel. Join with me wont you.

No, not at all. Unlike other subscription services that lock you into a specific title, VMP has at least 10-12 releases to choose from, plus you can always swap for anything in their store or take store credit for a future purchase. They’ve put out some great releases over the last couple of years that have been long out of print.

I already canceled my subscription after seeing the price increase and also not being interested in a lot of the recent releases. I am in the same boat with you where I'm worried about never seeing the preorders I'm waiting for. Hopefully we both will!
