That's a great and very interesting catch. Magically pulling the gems from the closed vault *does* work in this version of the game (and I didn't know that); but it's unfortunately not very useful for the speedrun, since you need to pry the vault open with the crowbar to get credit for using the crowbar more than once, and this is the only category we run where getting the gems is required. It might potentially save a fraction of a second to get the gems first and then open the vault, though. (It reminds me of another very similar oddity in the same area, which seems to have been coded less carefully than most of the game. You don't actually need to turn the crank in the basement to *get into* the hidden passage; you can just walk through the wall once the crank has been inserted. But you do need to turn the crank to get credit for *discovering* the passage.)
