It really does confuse me that Liberia is always talked about as having "avoided" colonization merely by not being part of the Scramble. Even after its independence, Liberia was subject to heavy political influence and financial assistance by the US. It's really only since the Second World War that this has no longer been the case.

It's bizarre that Liberia is characterized as "never colonized", when it was literally a settler-colonizer state imposed by force on the indigenous people.

It's fascinating how people's views on race could be (and still are in some places) so wrong. White Americans loved to separate Europeans with similar skin tones and yet they threw a bunch of African Americans onto the soil of an African kingdom and thought "they're basically the same, how could this possibly go wrong?" Then again, they may just not have cared.

It's easy to mock, and at the end of the day much of this situation was a shit show due to lack of caring on many American politicians parts, but on paper the idea of "we kidnapped these people from this place, so let's just send them back" makes sense

It took the united states 15 years to recognize Liberia after it claimed its independance, but only one day after Kosovo claimed its independence. I wonder why.
