What an emotional rollercoaster this was 😩 From shock to sadness to pure anger, this was truly a wild ride, and yet a beautiful movie overall. I now completely understand why so many, especially here on Patreon, wanted me to watch this movie.
Also, I definitely have my fair share to say at the end, so that's one of the longer discussions I've had on my channel, don't mind meeee!

As you can see, this is definitely one of the longer reactions I've done in a bit; there was just SO MUCH to react to, one thing after another, so I hope y'all don't mind! And ALSO... Thank you so much for reacting to this movie. I still remember seeing this with my mother when I was around 13 and I couldn't fully understand what was going on in the movie. Now I watch it at least once every few years and I still cry as if it's my first time. I even cried during your reaction. :)

In the scene were Nettie and Celie get forcibly separated one of the acting notes the two young actresses were given was to do anything to stay together. Hence why that scene is so gut-wrenching to watch. Afterward, they said Danny Glover needed a minute by himself because of how hard it was emotionally to play the person who was the cause of their separation.

The part where Celie smiles that big smile at Shug it gets me every time. She's been without love for so long she welcomes it in any form. That's pure love and it's a special bond she forms with Shug.

Whoopie may have officially won the Oscar for Ghost - but I will always believe it was really for THIS the year before. So many astounding performances. Such a heartwrenching story of injustice & survival. But with such a satisfying end. Thanks for letting us watch with you.

Anyone else notice that all four of them -- Celie, Nettie, Olivia,, and Adam are all wearing purple? So is Shug. The use of the color is fantastic in this final scene. It is everywhere you look!!

Re: Shug and her father. I'm sure, as a Preacher, he firstly disowned her probably for having children out of wedlock. Notice how at one point she's trying to "win him back" by telling him she's married now, (aka, more respectable) but in general she was DEFINITELY not living a life he approved of and was probably "dead to him," It likely started with a pregnancy. Also interesting, if you remember Sug tells Celie that her children are with her parents. Then notice in the big scene when she comes singing into the church and her father finally hugs her. A young woman in the choir starts the song. And she seems very overly "interested" in what's going on and smiles when Sug and her father are reunited. I wonder if it's very subtly trying to imply that may be Sug's daughter.

It IS her daughter. One of many. The pastor and the pastors wife raised her. Their relationship is touched on more in the book. Celie and Mister also make up, but she says she’ll never trust me.

No. Shug only has a son that’s mentioned. She doesn’t have a daughter we know of. If you read the book it only goes into Shug and her estranged son but even then it isn’t really elaborated upon where he is…it’s hinted that her kids father is Albert but not confirmed and that she has about 3. Also it’s sad because if Mr and Shug’s parents would’ve just let them be, it would have saved Celine years of abuse at his hands….

A little background info: Mister and Shug were a couple. She had 3 kids by him, that were raised by her family. That’s why her dad stopped talking to her. Mister wanted to marry her but his did wouldn’t let him. So she left town. But as you saw, they always had a thing for each other. Did you notice Celie didn’t even know his first name (Albert) until she heard Shug call him that?

I watched this movie for their first time when I was 12 or so. I didn’t fully under everything, I still balled my eyes out. I watched it again when I was 16 and I cried harder when I understood it. I’m 20 now, and I genuinely believe this is one of the best movies in film.

I think the saddest things for me whenever I watch The Color Purple or any period piece about this era is the fact that this really wasn't all that long ago in the grand scheme. It's a rough watch for sure.

Harriet Tubman was alive during Thomas Jefferson's life. Ronald Reagan was alive when Harriet Tubman was a live... Ronald Reagan was the 40th out of 46 presidents in the United States of America. When people talk about slavery and how black people should "get over it", it REALLY wasn't that long ago. Ruby Bridges (first black person to integrate in school, had to be escorted by National Guardsmen when she was 6) is 67 years old today.

One of my all-time favorite movies! The shaving scene after she’s read all the letters from her sister was so magnificently done! And the way the preacher was trying to deliver a message to the “sinners” by having the choir song “God is Trying to Tell You Something” but instead he gets the message…that was genius!

I watched it! Great reaction! I know it’s hard to forgive Albert. Alice walker, (who wrote the book) said that is what inspired Her to write the book. She had heard from her relatives about the abuse of the men in their lives. These men who were Alice Walker’s grandfather’s and her uncles. And she couldn’t understand how these men who were so good and nice to her used to be these men who were horribly abusive in all ways. She wanted to explore the reasons why men soften as they get older. I thought that was really interesting. Honestly it really hits you on many different levels which is why it won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction,,

This is one of my favorite films ever. Such a heartbreaking story. Alice Walker, who wrote the original book, should get a lot more credit for showing the reality of the not so near past. And Whoopi really did deserve the Oscar.

I’ve probably seen this movie 100 times and I still cry at 2 different scenes every single time. It’s such a good movie and and the the actors are amazing. I cried along with ya! I love Danny Glover, but he made it so easy to hate him in this movie!

It's a story with such depth Such universal truths I've seen it numerous times. Still cry. It's cathartic if you're an empathetic person. It's blows my mind that more beautiful literature telling stories with depth are so lacking in Hollywood

Such amazing performances from Whoopie Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Margaret Avery. I hated Danny Glover's character so much in this, which means he did a great job too. I remember being so confused watching this as a young person because I knew and loved Glover from Lethal Weapon and was so disappointed that his character in this was so unlikeable. I think that's the mark of a good actor though. I have been wanting to read the book by Alice Walker ever since watching this. So happy you reacted to it!

Danny Glover was not nominated for an Oscar because he caused so much hatred of the way women were treated and being a divisive character between whites and blacks. What the discussions basically said was that a black man could not be given an award for showing the brutal truth.

Danny Glover told Spielberg I’m only doing one take, you better get it. This was gut wrenching for him, it didn’t destroy his career but he showed his acting chops. Spielberg told the girls, no matter what, don’t let him separate you. They did a hellava job. One take. Danny had to take a break and pull himself together. It was epic.

In the book, Shug and Celie do more than kiss that night. Described in detail which for the 1980s was crazy. And the time setting of 1920s-1930s was absurb. Alice Walker is an amazing writer.

Mister (Albert) helped with the immigration problem because he was trying to break the curse that Celie put on him. She said until he did right by her everything he even thought about was going to fail. She was full-blown right. Albert was only trying to finally do right by her by giving Nettie and her children back to her. It's a mini redemption arc, buuuut for sure too little too late! This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It was lovely to watch your reaction to it! Loved it so much :) Thank you!

@@sxm76 Well, he never gave a shit about Celie. When he wanted Nettie, he had to settle for her. When he wanted Shug he had to stay with Celie who was his punching bag to release all the hate he had for her for not being the woman he wanted. It would be weird that even at the end, after she insulted him, threatened him and left him (something he totally deserved) he thought that he should do something nice for her, when he barely saw Celie as a human being.

I think it’s more than that. You could tell by the way he gave this shy wave to her in her pants store, and the way he smiled when Celie and Nettie were reunited. He definitely realized what he lost with her and I think he did feel regret. Part of it was to “break the curse” but I think part of it because he knew it was the right thing to do.

In the book Celie and Albert actually become friends before her sister comes back. He even asks her to marry him again but she tells him she doesn’t like men and is in love with Sug.

Such a beautiful story. I saw this in college with a bunch of guys totally by accident. We were "poor college students", we didn't have cable TV.. it was a rainy day so everyone was just chilling at home. We didn't have any TV (basic or local channels) or Internet but we had lots of used DVD's. We'd seen most of them and we popped this one in. By the end we were 7 guys with happy/bittersweet tears running down our faces. The power of good cinema 🤷‍♂️

This was the best movie of that year. No one who was apart of this movie received any awards because of the NAACP’s protest. Shame on them for taking that away from such an iconic movie.

@@ljohnson4881People were up in arms because Spielberg( white guy) directed it instead of black person and black men were portrayed badly. I think some in the NAACP like it. Ironically, then people were upset the movie got blanked in the Oscars. Also, the Oscars were still hating on Spielberg for being too successful too soon and not always doing things conventionally. Whoopi was up against Geraldine Paige. She basically got a lifetime achievement award for being blanked herself!

This movie is so reminiscent of things in the South. My elders have told me stories of family members here in Louisiana, who went through things very similarly. Its such a disturbing part of history.

Shug had kids out of wedlock and was young, and became a singer. Her parents were raising her kids they imply the girl singing the solo before shug takes over in the church is her daughter. So with her dad being a preacher he had disowned her until that moment. It's my favorite scene.

Hey Bo, I'm so glad you did this reaction. So many shy away from Color Purple because it's a story of black hardship, pain and heartbreak. IT's a story that needed to be told of marginalized women not only by society but by their own family. I am disgusted and angered by the brutality the men in this movie heap upon the women they are supposed to love and protect. Seeing this movie breaks my heart in so many ways.

It's such a HARD one to watch, but the payoff at the end...omg was that happy ending EARNED. She paid for it with blood, sweat, and tears, and that ending is soooooo cathartic. And as much as I wanted Mister dead, too, I totally understand Shug stopping her. The LAST thing Celie needed after everything she had suffered through was to end up in a black woman's jail block in the 30's, when humane treatment of prisoners was not something which was codified. She'd have been abused even further, and probably sentenced to die in the electric chair. Mister wasn't worth that. That's why Shug stopped her, and why she got her husband to agree to take Celie along with them when they left.

Wow! Literally almost everything you reacted on and said was exactly how this movie makes me feel . The heartaches are so deep during the bad times, the anger feels overwhelming , and the happy ending was absolutely needed . This movie is an emotional roller coaster and the acting was flawless . In watching this movie I think about how many takes the actors did for scenes... for me that alone would scar me permanently... I do not know how they got through this . It's hard to say that I enjoy this movie all in all but there are pure moments of kindnesses that do tug on the heart strings and realizations that are a long time coming . Thank you so much for this and I look forward to more .

Nominated for 11 Oscars including Best Picture, but lost 7 to Out Of Africa, which won Best Picture. It was nominated for Best Picture Best Actress Best Supporting Actress Best Adapted Screenplay Best Production Design Best Cinematography Best Original Score Best Original Song Best Makeup Best Costume Design.

_The Color Purple_ is one of those films that hits, and you can either re-watch it or only watch it once. For me, I can re-watch it for the beauty of its cinematography and performance. But it is a heavy-subject matter film. So much to feast on and digest.

The first half of this movie is real hard to watch, but it’s worth it for that ending. My favorite scenes are the dinner table, the scene when Shug leads the people back to church and then ending when she is reunited with her sister. And of course the movie got screwed at the Oscars.

I still feel a way about that lol 😒 I think "Out of Africa" won. I was raised with all kinds of culture and music including being taught and playing classical piano.... but even as a lil black girl I still knew "The Color Purple" should have won.

This film came out the year I graduated high school. I missed the theatrical release but had heard all the buzz & critical acclaim surrounding its 11 Oscars nominations the following year. I rented the video (VHS tape, not a DVD - LOL) & after the first watch, it became one of my all time favorites. The acting is incredible, each played their role superbly & so convincingly. I had only seen Whoopi Goldberg one other time & that was her comedy special (film of her Broadway show). It was phenomenal to watch her switch characters in her one woman show, but it was still comedy... To watch her in this film just blew me away. Hell, even Oprah killed it! Of course I had to read the book after seeing the film adaptation. What an epic tale & the ending of this movie always makes me ugly-cry every time I've watched it over the past 36 years, even watching these reaction videos makes me misty eyed. I get to experience seeing it for the first time again through others' eyes & watching them become fans themselves. The movie is an emotional roller coaster journey. It sheds light on a dark part of early American history & how difficult times were back then for women in general. But women in the African-American community had it so much worse, from both white men (systemic racism) & those in their own households (domestic violence against them & their children). I remember going to see this film with a couple of my black female friends from work, and it just broke my heart! I had read the book twice, loved it, and the funny thing is that before the film was made, I saw Whoopi in her show on HBO and immediately thought she would be the perfect Celie. I was overjoyed when I found out she’d been cast, could not wait to see the movie. This is one of my top favorite films of all time and always will be.

I really appreciate the way they handled "mister". he is never fully redeemed and it puts into perspective the reality of the situation. he learns and then repents by finally doing good by her but it's clear that doesn't completely absolve his past actions. he's made amends but knows that just because he did the right thing the best thing he can do is move forward better. he's still a piece of shit but even shitty people can be better.

The Color Purple was a film my grandmother watched often and I didn’t really follow the story until I was a teenager. At this point I’ve read the book, seen the Broadway production, and I can’t wait for the musical adaptation on film because the music in the show was so good. I love the stark contrast of the men in Celie’s life being full of hatred towards her but women that’s where the love has always been for her. Nettie, Sophia, and Shug. Those are the relationships that really mattered and that gave her strength.

Love your reaction as always. You've got a good heart and very insightful. So, this has definitely been in my top 5 movies my entire life (I can list a top 5 favorite movies but I hesitate to try to put them in order. If I HAD to this probably would actually be #1) It came out when I was 5 years old, and by 6 years old or so (not kidding) this was the video I would more often then not (at LEAST once a year) choose to rent when we went to the movie store. Kinda weird, since it's VERY heavy for a child, but something in me understood the message of the triumph of the human spirit. Literally have loved it my whole life. I always thought it was so interesting that one of the first (and only) people to treat Celie like a human and show her kindness and love was her husbands mistress. How weird is that when you think about it that way? Did you know this movie is both Oprah AND Whoopi's first major motion picture? And they BOTH gave Oscar worthy performances. In the novel it is very clear about Celie's sexuality (gay) and Shug's (bisexual) and describes the sexual relationship the two women engaged in. Yes, in the novel Shug has a very sexual relationship with Celie AND mister at the same time. Steven Spielberg has gone on record saying he regrets not being "brave" enough to portray the LGBT aspect, and regrets "Toning it down" to a simple kiss done in an almost joking manner. Such a special movie. It will always have a special place in my heart.

I’m glad you enjoyed this film. I can definitely tell you meant what you said. I could also tell that you are probably not from the south and have lived a life like Celie. If you had, you would have cried a whole lot more. Having lived that kind of life, it’s soul draining and you want no more each day to die, but the belief in God gave Celie and us that have lived it, the strength to make it day by day. I believe there was a lot missed that were inferred, but could not be fully expressed in the film version. Such as Miss Celie and Shug became lovers. They moved into Celie’s old house and loved one another forever. Every time Shug tried to speak to her father, he would not forgive her and would not accept her back home. Her father and mother raised Shug’s daughter in the church. When they are at the juke joint and they hear “God’s Tryin’ to Tell You Somethin’”, the soloist you hear IS Shug’s daughter. That was same position Shug held in the church choir when she lived with her parents. Celie told Harpo to beat Sofia on purpose. She knew he would be stupid enough to do it and she knew what Sofia would do. That her way of getting back at Harpo for hitting her in the head with that rock the first day she met him. The scene’s that kept cutting back and forth between Miss Celie fixin’ Ta shave Mister and the African ceremony of cutting Adam and Tashi was about cutting... but it was Adam’s AND Tashi’s circumcision. There is so much to talk about but what it comes down to us us that have been raped by our father’s, beaten for eating a biscuit and most Importantly, to me, the mental and spiritual beat downs we took by being told how ugly we are, how nothing we are, etc., you begin to believe it. Once you have believed it for decades, there’s no getting over it. It replays in your mind forever and your only release from this hell on earth is to gratefully die. That’s when you have to find the collateral beauty in a life of suffering... The Color Purple.

You’re right, I’m not from the south and I’m clearly not Black, so the most that I can do is listen/watch the stories being told of people being in these terrible positions; listen and not speak as if I know what I’m talking about. I can only say my feelings about what I witnessed and how I can’t imagine how it actually felt, I can’t necessarily contribute to the conversation though, but I can listen and hear everything.

The part of the movie where Suge walks down to the church and gains her fathers forgiveness is very powerful. The song selection is perfect and you can see the story shift it’s energy to redemption. Even though Mister was a terrible person and by this point you had given up on having any expectation of him he does the unthinkable eluding to an extremely powerful message. There is always room for goodness even in the worst of us. As Celie said, until he did right by her everything he touched will fail, and it did, and he was finally able to do something decent showing his growth and change of heart and spirit. Such a brilliantly executed film from a phenomenal work of literature.

I've seen The Color Purple many many times and I still cry at "God is Trying to Tell You Something" - the whole church scene, ending with Shug and her dad hugging. Sob. Sob. So true...

The book fills in ALL the details from everyone’s story. It tells Nettie’s life as a missionary in Africa; Sophia with the Mayor’s family and how she got out of jail. Mister had three children. If the movie had everything in the book it would have been a miniseries! MUST READ THE BOOK!!

That was Whoopi Goldberg's first feature film and that was the film I was introduced to her in 1987 while I was a nanny in Puerto Rico. After that Jump'n Jack Flash I was a fan of her from then on and still is. Every time I watch the movie the ending has me in tears for some reason. Steven Spielberg picked such an awesome cast for the movie and everyone did such an amazing job on the film. Back then in the south for black girl/woman it was awful. Alice Walker wrote the book and they made it into a movie. She even loved the idea of Whoopi Goldberg playing the adult version of Celie. You should read the book by Alice Walker.

Hey Sam, I honestly wasn't sure I was gonna jump in and watch along with you, as we know most of the movie is a tough watch. I've only ever watched it in full twice long ago and that was enough for me. Even as good as the performances are, the movie subjects get you PO'd as most any human would be. I remember when this movie came out in theaters.. Then, some of the cast (or activist) went on Phil Donohue show and bashed it for everything it stood for. It was hated as a bad portrayal of black men being abusers and it was directed by a white man... It was shi*show, for real but it still stand the test of time and I cry/excited when reactors watch this with kindness.

The woman who basically kidnapped Sophia when she got out of prison, away from her family for 8 years, was most definitely an OG karen, fr! Especially when the men were trying to straighten her out, with her privileged, “call the cops”, blue blooded, uppity, non driving butt! Spielberg's first theatrical film The Sugarland Express didn't make much of an impact, but then he followed it up with Jaws, and from then on he instantly became one of the biggest names in Hollywood, churning out one massive smash hit after another (plus 1941, but even that made a decent amount of money for the time and only looks bad if you compare it to how much his other movies made). After keeping this up for ten years, audiences were naturally growing a bit frustrated at his lack of recognition from the Oscars, for whom the 1980s were probably their biggest ever period of living up to their stereotype of hating anything "popular" rather than stodgy, highbrow "art." In particular, a lot of sour grapes were had over how Spielberg's success was presumably only due to his making crowd-pleasing blockbusters, and if he tried something more like typical "Oscar bait," that movie would flop just as hard as the ones they typically loved. But then he made The Color Purple, and that idea was shattered when the audience he'd built up over the past decade proved perfectly willing to follow him into this new territory, and the movie was just as successful as his other work. So the Academy hit back with a move many even at the time declared underhanded and a clear deliberate snub: while the movie received an impressive eleven nominations, Spielberg himself did not get one for Best Director. Industry insiders have also said this is actually even worse than it looks, as one of the biggest parts of a director's job is getting the right performances, meaning that a film like this which gets three acting nominations (for Whoopi Goldberg, Margaret Avery, and Oprah Winfrey) should mean the director automatically gets nominated too. And as a final insult, it didn't win a single one of those eleven nominations (and Sidney Pollack, who won Best Director for Out of Africa, looks a bit sheepish during his acceptance speech, clearly well aware of the situation). But Spielberg didn't let it get him down and just kept plugging along with a career going strong to this day, including getting perhaps an even more deserved Best Director win for Schindler's List.
