Day 22 (June 21): One of our favorite sections on the GDMBR: we ride 79 miles of outstandingly beautiful Mountain country from Kremmling to Steamboat and do a killer climb out of Radium. You really gotta earn those amazing Colorado views - the Radium northbound elevation profile looks like an ECG to us 😂 We think we earned our beers tonight 🍻
The ride leads us through the Radium State Wildlife Area, Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, along Stagecoach State Park and the lovely Yampa River. It's green, full of colorful flowers, wide vistas and valleys with clear rivers. That's the Colorado we imagined right there! A special treat: We get to meet several of the Tour Divide 2021 racers and enjoy the brief chats we have with them - impressive how they are riding strong since June 11 and keeping a great attitude! We see plenty of wildlife and even a fire rescue team in action, getting water with their helicopters for a nearby fire. It’s impressive to see the helicopter fill up on water from the air!
Streamboat immediately charms us - friendly locals, mountains everywhere, a fun river for tube floating and water sports, endless mountain bike trails, ski hills, hot springs, several bike shops, vegan restaurants and vegetarian options on pretty much every menu, good craft beers... feels good to us! Such a lovely place to get our bike repair work done - the amazing team at Orange Peel takes wonderful care of our bikes and finds out that Fred's Hydraulic cable broke, that's why the rear break doesn't work. After a service, it looks like we are all good and back on the trail tomorrow! Next stop today: Hot springs! Fingers crossed we get a spot in this bustling town 🤞
