We finally made it to THAT episode

This scene is so well made, Especially the tense building up everywhere, while others discussing the hole , Reiner's resolve to clear his mind is so well shown along with the clouds clearing and the soundtrack can't be replaced with any other. Well orchestrated scene in the entire show

That " I'm armored titan and he's the colossal titan " left him speechless

And now I can finally say it - remember when Armin, Reiner and Jean attacked female titan the first time? Armin told everyone to keep their hoods on, so that the titan would not recognize them. But there is a shot showing Reiner remove it in purpose before jumping in. He WANTED to be recognized and the show was pretty clear about it. Such attention to details and foreshadowing is awesome, am I right?

This is the episode when AoT stopped being a 'great' story and stepped into 'Legendary' status. I will never get old of watching people reacting to this episode.

There are too many interesting hints about this reveal to count: 1. Everything in this episode was designed to generate tension: dark cloudy skies, rushing of high winds, the overall silence of the episode except for the final epic track and few choice subtle discordant tracks, the literal red flags that whip in the wind with a greater presence (more flags, close-up of one flag, etc.) and progressively louder volume as the tension continues to increase, the sudden and inexplicable tension in everyone's voices, expressions, side-eyes, etc. (which YOU even caught onto but couldn't place/explain), the bizarre use of reflections on Reiner/Bertholdt, the weird way that Mikasa suddenly cut off Sasha when she said, "I can't believe Ymir was also a titan." 2. Note that all of 2x1-6 takes place in roughly 24 hours, and while Eren/Armin/Mikasa/Jean all participated in Annie's capture, the rest of the 104th cadet corp was being mysteriously detained until we saw them at the start of 2x1, so none of them even knew that Annie was suspected or captured. So while WE know that "Ymir...also [being] a titan," could be a reference to Annie, Sasha's comment would have revealed to Reiner/Bertholdt that Annie had been captured and forewarned them of their possible exposure; hence, the reason Mikasa cut her off. It's an extremely subtle hint about everyone's increased knowledge of the situation BEFORE Reiner outs himself. (Remaining hints are "re-watch" spoilers for episodes before this) 3. If you look back through all of the prior episodes of AoT, you'll catch a TON more moments where the camera just-so-happens to randomly pull focus onto Reiner at times that, when we first saw them, just blended into the scene and gave us "basic context" of the group's reaction to things happening with Eren, but NOW you can clearly see that there was intention and meaning behind the camera-work and Reiner's actions. Rewatching the show has an entirely new meaning now, eh? There are more "rewatchable reveals" like this down the road. As ever, you need to pay attention to the details in a show like AoT. ;-) 4. In season 1, we are made to think that Annie is a standoff-ish character that nobody particularly likes (except perhaps Eren who was simply too trusting of the humanity vs. titans mentality and hadn't yet come to grips with the fact that humans can themselves be his enemies). However, if you look back through all of season 1, the only person who went out of their way to show any concern for or intent to approach Annie unprompted is Reiner; first when he and Eren were training in physical combat and they "teased" Annie, and second when they cleared out Trost HQ of small titans and everyone was expressing relief, but Reiner has a very brief interaction of him walking up to Annie, asking if she's okay (after slaying the second titan), and then her ignoring him and walking away. So, contrary to the impression the writing gives, if anyone were to have any sort of interpersonal relationship with Annie, it would be Reiner. 5. When Armin, Reiner, and Jean are facing off against the Female Titan, Armin had warned them all to keep their hoods up. They already covered all the other reasons for why that scene was strange at the end of season 1 and in this episode, but an additional detail is how strange it was for Reiner to PURPOSEFULLY remove his hood just BEFORE he leapt up to attack the "distracted" Female Titan. He wanted her to recognize him so that she could fake-attack him and give him a chance to pass along Eren's suspected location. 6. The biggest hint of all imo: at the end of season 1, when Annie is outed at the top of the stairs and she says, "I failed to become a warrior," the line seems out of place and doesn't make sense. Then, the ONLY other time we ever hear that word come up is two episodes before this one when Connie asks Bertholdt if Reiner has always been a reckless and headstrong "soldier", and Bertholdt, very bizarrely, answers, "No. In the past, Reiner was more of a warrior." And then everyone has a short moment of pause and confusion before we suddenly get distracted by other stuff in the scene. 7. Finally, in the previous episode, as the tower is coming down, Ymir's titan tells them to grab on if they want to live, and everyone else stares back at her in shock, you can catch a glimpse of Bertholdt about to bite his hand in the top-left corner of the screen. The only reason he doesn't stick out immediately and grab your attention is because a) he isn't in the center of the camera, b) the shot doesn't last long, and c) everyone in the camera's view has their mouths open in shock just like him, so he "blends in." It's VERY well done.

I love that the universal reaction to Reiner dropping the bomb is "Did i read the subtitles correct?" and i think what really gets everyone is that he's just so nonchalant about revealing such a big secret 🤣🤣

This is an absolute masterpiece of an episode. From the tension building, the camera shots of the reflections indicating the two sides of the characters and the literal red flags pointing at them. To the casual reveal, the realization our characters already knew and the emotional outburst from our main characters. All coming out of nowhere. Incredible.

This is also why Attack on Titan has such a high rewatch value. Watching it the second time you notice things you never noticed before. Small things like Annie asking Reiner if they should take action now and him saying not yet. They aren't talking about retreating/attacking with the squad, they are talking about Reiner transforming and smashing through the inner wall.

The casual Titan identities reveal was done precisely to throw the viewers off just like Eren was (even though he already had some information he was in denial). Isayama achieved this so well, we feel just as confused as Eren when Reiner tells him who they are.

No the subtitles weren't broken. They revealed the biggest plotpoint so far in a casual conversation as if they were simply asking what they had for breakfast. I had to rewatch that part like 5 times before I could wrap my head around it

Man, Eren screaming while tearing up always gave me chills. Like, you can feel his pain and rage because deep down he didn't believe that Reiner and Berthtolt are Armored and Colossal Titan, but also remembered that they destroyed the wall 5 years ago and make his mom died. So he's very angry because two people that he thought as a brother and friend are actually the culprit who destroyed the walls. This episode is truly amazing.

If you look back to last episode as the tower falls you can see a certain tall person is about to bite his hand to save himself

I love how Sasha was interrupted by Mikasa when she told "Is Emir a titan too...?" The hints are everywhere, but you see them only when you know what is going to happen. Love this show.

That reveal dialog made like that just like in the manga. IIRC in the manga Reiner dialog box/balloon thing was shown like it's background noise while Hange dialog was the main focus of that scene. I think they animated this scene perfectly, and so many viewer who's not reading the manga was confused and assumed the subtitles was wrong.

That's why I love this show, it's so unpredictable and emotional, when you think you finally understand, suddenly it turns out that aot will blow your head off. MASTERPIECE!!!

I always think of the LITERAL RED FLAGS blowing in the wind in this episode and liken it to winds of change. After this revelation, their image and this anime was forever changed to me.

When you look at the previous episode, when the tower was falling, Bert looked like he was gonna bite his hand and turn into a titan

‘Who are the good guys?! Who are the bad guys?!’ The epitome of AOT.

Something I love about this episode is Eren's noticeable development as he zooms through all stages of grief, assimilates the situation and immediatelly transforms to attack Reiner, while he couldn't do it against Annie at first out of disbelief, despite her literally having transformed before his eyes as she killed his comrades

Oh boy THIS episode is legendary. All of us can have different favourite episodes but you cannot say this episode isn't just awesome. The reveal, emotions, MUSIC- It can be that the characters actually sounded more tense - I mean, especially the start of the episode was without any music, only the wind in the background. So it was very quiet. Plus they all already knew who were the traitors among them. If that's not enough tension, I don't know what is. I love how some of the things ''feel weird''... but rewatching it, it makes so much sense lmao it's amusing to watch your confused expresion. The way they just casually dropped one of the biggest reveals ever as a background conversation is just SO GOOD - It's so different from anything I've seen before, it just gets stuck in your head this way hahaha AoT being like the extra special kid between all of the others When they show you and connet all the details and your mind just gets blown because it ALL FITS SO MUCH I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW AWESOME OUR AOT AUTHOR IS TO MAKE SUCH A STORY The moment the music started... I can't even start to explain how I felt the first time watching this, and even after rewatching it so many times. That scene is just something else compared to everything on the internet, hate or love the anime, THAT scene is just top-tier. To be honest I didn't even need the audio - I hear the song and the characters literally in my head lmao from all those times I watched it. Eren's scream at the end is fenomenal - hats off for the voice actor, Yuki Kaji. He made Eren and his emotions so real. And damn I told you the cliffhanger is gonna get us killed :DD can't wait to see the next episode Btw, calling Bertholdt simply "Bert" is acceptable imo. To this day, there are fans struggling to pronounce his name, so I say why not give him a nickname tbh Speaking of Bertholdt, if you go back to previous episode when Ymir teared down the tower, the moment before she tells them to "grab her" and saves them, you can actually see Berth about to bite his hand lol it's always the small details with this show.

This is the first time I've seen someone not immediately scream at the cliffhanger.

Welcome to THE episode!! This episode sent me into shock when I first saw it. I was completely shaken, and almost started crying. I felt like I had been betrayed, even though I was never even there! That’s how you know it’s incredible story telling.

Rewatching this episode always fascinates me. It is not done obvious but the lack of background music creates such a subtle tension, normally you can figure the mood of certain scenes by the soundtrack playing but the fact that there is no music at all gives you that uneasy feeling where you wonder whats wrong, something is going on. Of course many more details play into this but the lack of music having such an impact is crazy. Not to mention the subtle reveal in a side conversation is just genius every time I watch it

This is the best AoT reaction episode for me, and I seen a lot of reactions. You were the only one I saw that noticed the tone shift in the characters speech before the reveal, I didn’t notice it myself in my watches before you mentioned. The difficulty in accepting the hard truth to the point you question the subs and even your sanity was exactly like I reacted to it. You paused while everything was still foggy but as soon as it started clearing you stayed focused and processed everything remarkably. And even though you had to remove Vogel Im Kafig, the brilliant edit isolating the voices made Eren’s scream awesome. Now Im even more excited for whats to come.

Annie, Reiner and Berthedildo are from another planet.

The reason Eren wasn't going nuts immediately was because he was likely in shock. I mean, even if you already somewhat suspected it, imagine if two of your friends randomly told you they were responsible for killing your village and your mother? I wouldn't know how to react, personally. I'd spend a good chunk of time trying to process that information haha. Also, while the reveal is very random, it has a reason for that which the show will get into. That's all I can say

Bert’s name is actually very easy to pronounce, despite how weird it’s spelled. The first syllable is just “bear” with a “t” sound at the end and the second syllable is pronounced the same as “hold”, but a “t” instead of a “d” at the end. So “Beart holt”

Oh. It’s ‘THAT’ episode. Lol. Makes you realise how great the story writing is with this series.

You can actually see Bertholdt who doesn't trust her getting ready to bite himself. That's just a tiny bit of the kinds of things the anime throws at your face when you are none the wiser. Welcome to "that". Bertholdt is pronounced Bert-holt essentially. Japanese pronounciation just changes it to Berutohoruto.

So nobody noticed Sasha's great observation about Annie sitting alone and liking sweets even though she look so grouchy? That was really mind-boggling guys! 🤣

The reveal music is in my top 5 for this anime and I'm pretty sure many wanted you to react to it but if you look it up on youtube it reveals reiner and bertholdt's identities

In the Japanese voice acting industry, it's not as simple replacing a voice actor/actress unless it's something serious. They will voice the same characters whether if the anime make a comeback or ongoing for 10 or even maybe 20 years from now. Much respect. Edit: And not just anime, other media platforms like in video games as well whether it's a big hit or not.

The genius of that scene, specially in the manga, is that people get caught offguard the hardest when someone comes up to you and tell you something outrageous in the most non-chalant way with zero build-up. It's like, how would you feel if someone just walked into your room while you're watching this video and say "Your father just died."? *There's no time to process!* It's a situation in which rather than being shocked and then the effect falling off over time, *you instead feel a complete blank and THEN the despair just keeps building up more and more and more each second as the truth settles in.* It's a very risky way for the author to do a major reveal, because it could just fall flat and waste it, but it pays off SO HARD here! 🤩 *This is easily THE moment I remember the most from the series.*

To summarize, this ep confirms so much suspicions and explains other stuff too while also creating more questions the colossal and armored titans are seemingly able to show up outa no where is because they did show up outa nowhere from their “hometown” outside the walls and really are humans on the inside Annie hesitated in killing reiner because they were actually accomplices Previous ep where bertholdt said Reiner use to be more solider-like makes much more sense here where it’s revealed the big brother persona he cultivated was a facade this whole time with Reiner getting too complacent with it as in he wore the mask so long he nearly became the mask Overall it’s sort obvious that they’re trained for this but aren’t fully accustomed to it as reiner broke down from the acclimated stress of it all as he was the one among the 3 who was most in the role as the big brother figure while betholdt and annie generally kept to themselves As for questions this ep revealed that reiner and bertholdt’s actions as the armored and colossal titans aren’t random acts of violence but calculated according to some goal to achieve which they need eren for The reveal coming out of nowhere is pretty bizarre but at the same time its part of what makes them human since it wasn’t suppose to be part of the plan and reiner revealed it while in distress, keep in mind this ep also offhandedly revealed that their personas were a facade this whole time and one that reiner was becoming complacent in so this whole time while he was being a big brother figure to everyone he was genuine about it yet was also keeping a huge secret that as the armored Titan he massacred a whole bunch of people all while he was still a child 5 years ago because he’s currently 17 and this means that 5 years ago when he and bertholdt brought death and destruction to eren’s hometown he was just a 12 yo kid Btw the reveal was a lot more inconspicuous in the manga since it didn’t have the exact same visual, the tense voices nor the dramatic music either
