I really love The Incredible Hulk movie. And I have actually binge read the main line of Hulk comics back when I was in college. Starting far back from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's six books to right at the end of Immortal Hulk. So I'm a bit sad that Hulk has only had two major solo films, which leaves his extensive mythology, cast and rogues having not gotten the spotlight they deserve. So I have a deep appreciation for the 2003 and 2008 movies (as well as the animated features).
@@MarvelKnight-tw9hb Bill Mantlo's #312 and Peter David's #377 are my favorite issues. For runs, I'd say Roger Stern, Steve Englehart, Bill Mantlo, Peter David, Paul Jenkins, Bruce Jones, Greg Pak on both the Planet Hulk/World War Hulk and The Incredible Hulks run, Jeff Parker on Red Hulk, and Al Ewing's Immortal Hulk.
I’ve been reading a lot of silver and bronze age Hulk comics this year. The classic stuff is consistently entertaining. Even when they’re not great, they’re always a hoot. Very underrated comics.
While I don't mind the changes to Hulk's origin in the MCU, I feel the lack of the Gamma bomb and Rick Jones makes it inferior to the comics. Having the Hulk being born by a Gamma Bomb symbolizes the character as this force of nature, this powerfull being that no one can control, not even his creator Bruce Banner. As for Rick Jones, not only he gives the Hulk another friend to help him, besides Betty, but the fact Banner suffered his accident trying to save the kid. shows alot of Bruce character, how he was always this selfless guy, making his fate, to be force to live with this monster inside him, even more tragic. He became the Hulk not because he was mad scientist and reckless tested the experiment on himself, but rather because he tried to the right thing and help a innocent.
Yeah, I definitely agree. I had a whole section about this in the video but I didn't want to put too much of my own fan nitpicks into it. I appreciate the callback to the 70s show but the gamma bomb, the nuclear paranoia, and the fact that Bruce creates this weapon of death but is redeemed by saving Rick, are all essential parts of the Hulk mythos for me. Even the gamma explosion itself is a big part of Hulk iconography, something the 2003 movie got right by using it as a visual motif.
Rick Jones name actually shows up in the opening credits of the 2008 film as an associate of Robert's, but yes that's not enough. I Actually kind of wish they would have used Rick in the film too and based him off how he was in the Marvel Adventures book as a lab assistant. The opening credits could have involved him like tripping over something and increasing the gamma ray dosage, which changes Robert into the Hulk, and actually have him having a small chit chat with Robert after he leaves the hospital and going along with him. That way, they could have still been working together and Rick trying to repay his debt
Always love your Hulk content Josh. Your enthusiasm for the jolly green giant always comes through. For me, Peter David's Hulk was the first Marvel character I got introduced outside of Spider-Man, so he will always have a special place in my superhero pantheon.
This was a fantastic video! This perfectly illustrates why I have always loved this movie from the very beginning. I am an ardent supporter of The Incredible Hulk, because, as a massive lifelong Hulk fan myself, it really is a love-letter to the character and his mythos. I also love the fact this film takes itself and its subject matter seriously. Something the MCU has continued to botch since The Avengers in 2012.
There’s a lot to like about the 2008 film and Leterier’s attention to comic details. I like a lot of the comics he drew from. However, for all that it gets right, it also highlights Leterier’s weakness as a director: actors. He’s an action guy and while most of the set pieces shine, the character-building moments often fall flat for me. Betty and Bruce’s intimacy scene in the motel is unintentionally cringey, for example. I would love to somehow mash up the best parts of the 2003 & 2008 films
Great video. The "Hulk takes Betty to a cave" became a trope starting with Tales to Astonish #83. Chris Claremont started his Marvel career with such a tale in Incredible Hulk #170, one of my fave (big monster vs BIG monsters).
i feel like josh and i would be the only two hulk fan kids at school and we would be best buddies because of it, and also, being brazilian and remembering the filming in Rio as a kid has a whole new layer of sentimentality ((((besides the TERRIBLE use of PORTUGUESE or the poorly made references to the geography of my country ahhahaha
Oh thanks, Blair! I'm glad you like them. I know sponsored segments can turn people off sometimes but hopefully people can just enjoy watching me unbox some cool comics.
@@PanelstoPixelsin another life i would've loved just watching you unbox cool comics on RU-vid 😂😂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. P. S. I love it in this life aswell.
Ed Norton was great And that scene where he re encounters Betty Ross (Liv Tyler is great too) is freakin well dramatic and emotive. I really miss those details from first MCU movies.
Don't worry, I haven't stopped. These vids just require a lot of research and I want to make other stuff too. The Comics That Inspired Iron Man 2 will be out soon.
Good video man. Are you going to do this with all the MCU movies? I kind of hope so because I've been compiling that information myself for my collection, but I want to cross reference to make sure I don't miss anything
12:12 Wow that comic drawing looks just like Edward Norton, and in my opinion, this confirms my case that Norton was the perfect candidate for the Bruce Banner/Hulk role
I like these breakdowns comparing the comics to the films! It’s fun to see the influences. This is still the only Phase 1 MCU film I haven’t watched yet…it kind of fell off of my radar and it was hard to find for a long time! I’ll definitely get around to it one day though so I can finally truly complete all of Phase 1! ✨
😂 the Bruce Jones Comics are like 70% the primary inspiration for the 2008 film. I just wish the ending wasn't deliberately ambiguous and actually had Robert not only gain full control over Hulk, but have access to his strength while still human like in those books. P.S.: Abominable is by far the worst story in the Bruce Jones Hulk run because of how a retcons Emil into pretty much a 24/7 abusive husband and Nadia into a small time restaurant owner instead of a big actor. It's only because of that story that I'm actually glad Peter David retconned Bruce's whole run into some mind screw by Nightmare
I would say that the 1982 Incredible Hulk animated series that ran on NBC Saturday mornings also was a draw of inspiration for the 2008 Incredible Hulk film too.
You sould really do a vid on the incredible hulk series one day , it's so INCREDIBLY haha* underrated and Bill Bixby is my favourite actor of all time .
I really think it’s time Hulk got another solo movie. The obvious comic run to influence it is World War Hulk but are there any other runs that you think would make a good film?
I feel like there is a great hulk movie buried deep down in there but the way it is it’s not that much of a serious take and feels like a movie that says hey all hulk is a big green strong dumb monster
I didn't really like either-HULK-film.HULK looked pretty fake in the first film, plus I don't like the use of split screens in films. The 2nd movie was much better, the HULK looked so much better also and I liked the story line a lot.The Abomination was very tough in the 2nd film and I like the HULK reveal in the factory. I may end up rewatching the 2nd film again, haven't seen it in years.
The 2008 Incredible Hulk is hands down the best version of Hulk to ever hit the screen. They portrayed Hulk perfectly. I hate what the MCU did to Hulk in the following movies.
The hulk in the mcu is ironically frustrating due to the licensing issues, It is a shame that the last hulk movie was nearly 16 years ago, Red hulk is supposed to appear in captain america 4, Which is... wrong to say the least
2008 version was awesome, Norton was perfect as Banner, Roth was perfect as Blonsky, both The Hulk and Abomination, had the right look and the story was simple but effective, with a great boss fight at the end.
There was 1 month between "The Comics That Inspired the MCU: Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk" and that was 5 months ago and not another since. What's up?
I love this movie so much. I always think norton is a better banner and Hulk than Ruffalo. I get why he didn't continue but if this wasn't the mcu and came out in 03 instead of 08 I would have love to see this be the first of a trilogie
This was a great movie but Norton acts like a wet piece of paper (probably because of the influence of '03 hulk). I think that if Ruffalo would have been in that movie, he would have done much much better
The 08 hulk is the best hulk we got in the mcu so far . Then they ruined hulk … they need to redeem his character and give him his rematch with thanos 🤬
During the released of Incredible Hulk, it's the very weak installment in the MCU but look at the sequels and spin-off today's in the MCU... The Incredible Hulk movie was way better than any of them
This Movie CGI was scorpion king at best. It was so bad. And the soundtrack was a cheap knock off of Danny Elfmans original epic soundtrack. It posed as a sequal to 2003 hulk yet the incredible Hulk didn't grow with anger. Norton was not convincing as some one who harnessed anger and rage. His transformation into hulk also looked so goofy and disproportionate. There were just so many inaccuracies and it wasn't at all a good film as many try to make it seem.
Great video! I think the Hulk as bomb dropped from a plane was done in Azzarello’s Banner mini-series published just before the Ultimates series. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if that idea comes even earlier. I almost think P3ter D@vid used it in a Hulk novel I read back in the 90s.
So disappointing. The solo movie was much better than the weak helpless Hulk of the last Avenger movies. We have NEVER had an interpretation of the character that resembles the comics (at least not the OG comics of the 60s and 70s). At least the movie was not only a lot better than Avengers 3 and 4, the movie is light years better than the 2003 Hulk......that was the worst Hulk interpretation ever.
