"this transphobic caricature of a trans person is actually a caricature of a transphobe's transphobic caricature of a trans person" is truly a singularity-brained take.
Actually their argument is that the transphobe's transphobic caricature of a trans person is actually just the transphobe doing a PARODY of how normal people THINK transphobes like him view trans people (but also it's a 100% spot-on imitation of what all trans people are like, however we'll strategically leave that part out if we ever need to push back against accusations of being transphobic).
Y'know, normally I'd be inclined to correct your frankly impressive savage butchery of the word Singularity (or singularly?) But honestly it does fit the theme XD
Ironically by playing this sort of game where at any time a text can at the same time be serious, or a parody, or a parody of an adversary's thought, or a literal interpretation of an adversary's thought, or "trolling", etc, and by always sort of just being able to pick the one reading that works, these conservatives become the "postmodernist" boogeyman that they have invented themselves, that abandons "absolute truth" in favor of whatever "comforts their feelings"
@@CuriousCauliflowerX Lots of people still think so, or they think that his thoughts and behavior isn't actually stupid but rather it's _savvy,_ all a ruse to make a point.
I remember certain new atheist anti-sjw types saying trump was more liberal than any Democrat. This was when "gays for Trump" were a semi common thing.
That comment reminded me of a conservative friend years ago who insisted Stephen Colbert and Glenn Beck were identical performers because obviously nobody would ever take Glenn Beck seriously, so he must be a comedian doing a parody of over-the-top conservatism. He staunchly refused to admit that anyone took Glenn Beck seriously, even when he himself believed the same things Glenn said.
Believing contradictions is the basis of all conservatism. All conservatives believe Jesus is their God while also believing Jesus was wrong about absolutely everything. Wrongest but best God ever, that's conservatism.
@@BubbaDredge I don't disagree per-say, but not all conservatives believe Jesus is their god. Ben Shapiro for example is Jewish and has actually been getting a lot of shit recently because he refused to say "Jesus is King" and for being Jewish. I mean I don't care about Benny's feelings per-say but there are conservatives who are Jewish, Atheists, and so forth.
There's a name for that: "Kidding on the square." You know: "of course Trump won't really bring back the SS. It's just a joke! Don't be so sensitive! Oh, was that on my porch? Sweet, my SS uniform is here!"
No no you see Joel, he’s parodying what liberals think conservatives are like by creating a text which he believes the liberal idea of a conservative would make. And every comment is just people playing along. This is every conservative ever actually. None of them are saying their ideas, they’re that behaving in the way you think they are for a laugh. It’s impossible for your liberal mind to understand as if you did it would simply become part of the act.
This is actually what conservative fails to understand. Every liberals is equally playing along by acting how conservatives thinks liberal acts. Every liberal is actually on the joke.
Actually JP Sears is parodying what conservatives think liberals think conservatives are like. You're just not smart enough to understand all the layers of irony.
You hit the nail on the head. I am continuously terrified at people's ability to comfort themselves in the face of reality for no real reason. You can like problematic things and accept that they are problematic and also realize that doesn't make you a bad person.
If you have a problem with things that you didn't notice before then that actually means you've grown as a person. Some people's inability to change their opinions is scary.
Sitting here eating my corn dog at the introduction like “hey, I commented on that video, I wonder if I said anything blackpilly enough to shake Joel’s core”
the Doug walker misinterpretation is so disheartening, cause you clearly preempted the criticism at numerous occasions, and yet, watching the video, it was already immediately obvious that people would take it out of context. The death of media literacy will never cease to disappoint and frustrate
At this point "media literacy" is a term that triggers some conservatives already. But honestly, the whole point in which they interpret art seems built on the assumption is that all good art supports their worldview and all bad art is bad because it got corrupted by "the wokes."
I saw a post about this on the OneyPlays subreddit and half the comments were people leaving scathing reviews of this video, followed by them straight up admitting they haven’t watched and won’t watch the video.
@@actualgoblin because a non-insignificant number of them are bigoted edgelords who use comedy to hide behind their disgusting opinions of the world. His fanboys are pathetically annoying. Especially since OneyPlays is just doing the same thing that South Park and Family Guy used to do but with a more monotonous voice.
One of the interesting things about the Team America: World Police conversation is how the pro-war interpretation of the movie is arguably the more interesting one, like, as art. It shows Matt and Trey as having a fierce, seemingly unavoidable feeling of patriotism clashing with their characteristic apathy. They wanted to express that patriotism without coming off as "fake," this perceived fakeness being a frustration they'd been very very vocal about at the time. They saw the pro-war side as being insincere for portraying the military as this hyper-competent strategic force, and they saw the anti-war side as being insincere, almost certainly just because they happened to know so many people in Hollywood who were anti-war who they perceived as insincere anyway. So the film is essentially a statement of "We love and stand by our stupid, good-for-nothing, constant fuckup of a country." Which, agree with it or not (I don't), it's definitely the most Matt and Trey read of the film I can imagine.
I'd be curious to see if they still do because they've said absolutely nothing about him since they first unapologetically got behind him after he won the 2016 election.
@@universalperson It's also perfectly logical: they're in the entertainment business. The anti-war side they saw wasn't activists or war victims, it was actors and celebrities denouncing a war they didn't understand. That's why the actor guild is the villain of the movie. It's the old Jordan Peterson virtue signaling argument. Activists don't believe what they believe out of conviction, but out of conformism and vanity. To be fair, I think this view is almost entirely correct, but a stopped clock is right twice a day, no? however insincere a lot of activists and celebrities are, they fall on the right side of history when they take a stance against war.

You got blowback for critiquing Team America but imagine if you critiqued the social commentary of South Park. That fan base would rabidly disagree on a cult level. I know there's an overlap in fans but some South Park fans are the embodiment of the Rick and Morty IQ meme.... I actually want you to cover it now....
I think it's been covered so many times now, the people who haven't realized it are intentionally choosing not to. Matt and Trey are weird "both sides" libertarians, libertarians are just incomprehensible
I have been in an argument with one of these people for several years running. Every time I nail him to the wall with an argument, it's like tabula rasa by the next day. It just does not go in. There is no winning.
I heard a similar thing back when the colbert report was on air, like supposedly conservatives who liked that show interpreted steven colbert's character as a liberal cartoon of conservatism and not as a satire of conservatism
i think a lot of comments on youtube videos are written before people finish them or without even watching it at all. i see it a lot and people just look so stupid when they do it. i very much enjoyed the latest big video and this little one ! keep doing what you do joel!
I'm the kind of genius who makes a comment partway through watching a video and then they explicitly say the thing I commented, 2 minutes later lol. Makes me feel smart but dumb at the same time
I do that a lot, but usually because I have something to say about a specific thing, and regardless if the rest of the video makes my statement either invalid or redundant, I need to say it right then otherwise I won't remember what I wanted to comment about by the end. Tbf I have been attempting to type out my comment when it comes to me, but not submitting it until I've finished the video. In the events where I do submit it first, I go back and edit it, either changing what ended up being wrong, deleting it entirely if necessary, or even just pointing out I'm an idiot for commenting early if I want to allow me to be the joke all along.
Some of the people that leave comments has absolutely no intention to watch and engage with the video. They probably saw Big Joel's vid on some other parasitic thief "reacting" or "responding" to Joel and cherrypicks the video.
The standards for engaging in discourse for the tone deaf and media illiterate is based on posturing, intimidation and smug ignorance. At no point do they ever have the self awareness in those nano seconds before their reactionary comment to analyze and digest your criticsims.
"Portraying the liberal's boogeyman of what a conservative is." Pah! Is the comment writer embarrassed that they surround themselves with clowns or something? Twisting reality so much because their idol makes bad and embarrassing art.
There's a lot of Republican Party supporters who insist that their party is either "moderate" or is becoming so. 99% of the time their definition of "moderate" is "this person promotes social conservatism without citing the Bible," even though it is perfectly possible to promote racism and other ills by cloaking what one says in "science" or "reason."
So hey. I watched your video when it released and I couldn't really write this reply cause I was super overworked and exhausted that day. Taking the chance to do it. Seriously, lol Thank you for saying that About team America. Ever since the day I watched it eons ago, this movie made me very comfortable. Context: I am not an American and live in a place that lives under constant threat of being 'intervened' by the US. I think that both interpretations are true. Yours and mine interpretation (and its creators') that it is a pro-war film are correct. BUT it is certainly an anti-war film. To be precise, the film is markedly against the "War on Terror" and it effectively parodies it. But the film is also echoing something that was a big concern among liberals back in the ages of the Iraq War and its repercussions. As liberals, it was important to oppose the war on Iraq and to talk a lot about how George Bush lied. How Guantanamo was awful and all that stuff. But liberals were also pretty worried about the future. The War on Iraq and before it the Vietnam War. They were 'BAD WARS'. And although a liberal will be able to tell you that there were bad wars (specially after the wars happened and their damage is irreversible). A liberal also needs you to understand that FUTURE WARS MIGHT BE GOOD. That's why, the bad guy here is Kim Jong-Il, an 'evil guy' that has no relationship whatsoever with the Iraq war. And the final speech is about how America is still needed to keep us protected from the 'assholes'. The moral of team america is neither "war is bad" nor "war is good" , it is "yeah that war was bad, but we need war". They want you to laugh and hate on the Iraq war, but be ready to support the next one, cause there will always be another evil dictator and the US military is the only solution they want you to think about when that time comes.
Pardon my reading comprehension, but I can't figure out if in the second paragraph you wanted to write "comfortable" or "UNcomfortable". The latter makes more sense to me, given the context.
What "other solutions" do you have in mind? I'm trying to think of an alternative to war that could have stopped the Axis Powers in WWII, but I'm drawing a blank.
Kim Jong Il's relation to Iraq war was through his prominence (and diversity as the only non-Muslim) in the "axis of evil" - a Bush era term for foreign governments which sponsored terrorism and/or were pursuing weapons of mass destruction. Also, he had far greater comedic potential than Khatami (dude was a moderate) and Saddam was already captured as they were working on the movie.
@@jimmyhirr5773Honestly WW2 is probably the easiest one to think of alternatives, the allies and soviets and everyone else had like 20 chances to stop the Germans and they just didn't.
If the western powers had allied with the Soviet Union and listened to their warnings about Fascist Germany, instead of using them as a buffer zone against Fascist Germany’s expansion, then the whole war could have been avoided. If you get to the point where you’re already fighting a war you’ve fucked up.
There are Fans of the Nostalgia Critic that hasn't seen the Wall Review but defend it to death. Not that people like Doug are uncommon in Nerd spaces. My last DnD group had two guys unable to comprehend that Doctor has political themes. "Wait you are telling me that Tories selling the world to the Cybermen for more power is political?"
I think his the wall video is absolutely terrible but also I'm sad about how much this obfuscates the entirety of the legitimately good insight he brought to the table in his older vids
The fact that reality is irrelevant to so much of humanity has left me feeling uncomfortably misanthropic. I used to feel like society as a whole was working towards a clearer, better future, with a stronger understanding of the world and our place in it. Now I know people have no interest in such a thing. It makes me feel bad literally every day. I thought that was the whole point. But it's not. There is no point, except to believe whatever you vibe with, and never let anything challenge that.
Ultimately what we're dealing with here is a subset of extremely loud and persistent people with political agendas. These type of people have always been here, they've just been able to be louder and more in-your-face than ever before in human history. Similarly, the people actually working to impact the world in meaningful ways have been here and are still out there doing the work. They're just quieter than the bullshitters People have always made the world in their image. Unfortunately that's a part of being human that's easier to do now than ever. But having empathy is also a part of being human. And that, despite everything, is easier than ever - it's easier than ever to see into someone else's life through their eyes, just by typing a few keystrokes into a search bar.
A youtuber called Owen Morgan likes to say something like, "History always favors progress" when talking about how shitty the world is right now. As in, where we're at globally now is better than we were 50 years ago, which is better than 100 years ago, which is better than 200, etc., etc. That there are moments when the most awful, horrible things may happen (obvious example is WWII) but society comes out the other side favoring more progressive ideals and being better than it was before that awful moment. It's a comfort to me when everything seems horrible.
DUDE THIS HAS BEEN KILLING ME NONSTOP SINCE THE ESCALATION OF THE GENOCIDE IN GAZA. I can’t get it off my mind. the stories we tell ourselves, the things we CHOOSE to believe about ourselves and the world. The way we will sneak around the obvious, huge things that we are refusing to face. And conservatives seem to lean into this universal human aspect the very most. To deadly results.
Yep! Apt description of [K]Hasbara ecosystem. You win this thread simply by the sheer urgency of the subject-matter. However.. There's a limit to how much you can do that without being a sadist-psychopath.
Reminds me of those who said that the former president was joking about ingesting bleach to cure a certain virus. No way. And if he was, it wasn't the time or place for joking.
I live in the Bible belt; always have. My mom went from democrat to full blown alt right. Most of them have gone batshit. It isn't a caricature or id have bodily autonomy 😭
The problem is that some people have mentally fenced off any alternative viewpoint, criticism or self reflection and you will sadly never ever get through to them or even have an honest conversation with them. The only way they can get it out is if they decide for themselves to try and change their thinking or consider what others have to say
Why did I think I could click on a video about a comment that ruined someone's life thinking it wouldn't ruin my life? I thought people could write more coherently than that and now all my illusions are shattered!
wanted to let you knwo that i really liked when you dressed up like the nostalgia critic. if you could keep doing that in your future videos I think that would be really good. I know you probably dont want to make that many videos about doug which is ok. I think even if you dont mention the nostalgia critic the outfit would still work in your regular videos.
Absolutely. I would appreciate if he dressed up like the Nostalgia Critic throughout every video from now on, regardless of subject matter. In fact, I think the best thing would be for him to dress up like the Nostalgia Critic even when he's not on camera, to reach his full potential he should be wearing that outfit constantly, whether eating, sleeping or bathing.
I think it was very brave of you to come out as a Nostalgia Critic fan. As a former fan myself, I can’t bring him up without shame coming over me. Little Joel continues to be an icon and inspiration
I think Variable Sized Joel should remember Sartre's quote about anti-semites being unserious pigeons that will make fun of you for playing chess with pigeons or something.
My theory is that there is no Medium Joel. I know, controversial, but hear me out. The two Joels exist in different quantum states. Once Little Joel gains enough energy, he becomes Big Joel. Once Big Joel loses a similar amount of energy, he returns to Little status. Medium is the near-instantaneous transition state in between. At least, that's what I got from this text.
I think it's both true and dispiriting that there are people who will contort their interpretation of media into infinite twists in order to justify the conclusion they want to draw, and why that's frustrating. But I think to avoid it actually blackpilling your sense of hope in the world, it's helpful to remember that what they're doing at that point is just... lying. There are lots of people who will lie and keep lying about things, and that sucks, but that doesn't have any effect on the existence of truth in the world. Liars suck but even if everyone alive chose to lie, the truth still exists. It feels less hopeless to call it what it is, rather than to become distracted by their waves of contortions.
I gotta say I love that comment, not because I think it's correct, but because I'm also sometimes prone to attempt reaching like that. In fact I'm pretty sure I've made similar reading before. Not a conservative btw, fuck those people.
Really annoyed that this video is how I find out that Big Joel made another massive one. I watched every big joel video, subscribed to the channel, like the videos, watched the recent ones right as they come out, filter my homepage from garbage constantly, and I never even saw this video on my homepage for 5 days! Edit: People keep commenting the same thing over and over. I do not like the subscription tab, it's bloated and cannot show you other people's videos. I do not want to use the subscription tab. I want my home page to work like it has for years.
Yeah youtube’s shit homepage is why I mostly peruse the subscribed to tab or turn on the bell for creators I really like. It sucks so hard though and RU-vid will often give me videos on my homepage I’ve already seen rather than new stuff from people I actually follow
By homepage, do you mean the subscription feed, or the actual homepage? If it's the actual homepage, you should be checking the subscription feed instead if you want to see videos from channels you've subscribed to. Although youtube is not as reliable at showing them there anymore either, because one of the biggest tech companies in the world is no longer capable of running a functioning website apparently.
Subscriptions are not guaranteed to show up on your home page and are not supposed to. If the home page showed all your subs, what would the subscriptions page be for? Just go there instead of the homepage and you will never miss a sub video. Or if, like many users, you have some sort of allergy to that tab, you can click the bell to get notifications when new videos come up.
@@EebstertheGreat there are constant community posts on the subscription tab that are just there to increase engagement. The home page is supposed to show your subscriptions AND relevant videos. It is doing neither for the past few months.
And remember, these are the people who believe that there is an absolute truth *and* that it is something we can perceive, process, understand, apply, and uphold.
I have to personally apologize, I was one of the Team America comments, I have personally failed Little Joel. It was great video and I should have opened with that. I can only rest knowing that I did not write the comment that broke him.
This reminds me of when the humanities as a field had a self-reflexive moment about Trump's usage of Alternative Facts. The way in which people like Bruno Latour feels that their deconstructive approach (that in a manner of speaking, truth is constructed and that an attempt to justify morality based on a universal "truth" is flawed) ultimately creates a language for Right Wing Figures like Trump to coopt these ostensibly left-wing methodology into something like "Alternative Facts" means literary critics should turn away from this methodology and return to more textual-based interpretation. ("Why Has Critique Run out of Steam? From Matters of Fact to Matters of Concern") I don't particularly agree with him, I suppose, but for a while, it leads to "Reading Wars" where a bunch of professors were kind of just trying their best to justify how their methodology is better than the other. All this is to say, as an educator myself, I guess my approach to this conundrum is that I'm always asking my students to back their readings with evidence. You need to be able to cite something in the text to justify your reading, regardless of your interpretation. Your reading can resonate with you, but if you want to sell it to others, then you have to justify it with evidence from the text or otherwise. TL;DR cite your sources, folks.
I've seen contradictory readings of the same art piece which I found both absolutely valid and interesting. I've also seen people with who I agree on the quality of some art but whose arguments for it are just insane. What I constantly see is people rationalising backwards why art they like supports their worldview and art they don't the opposite. It's absolutely corrupting.
As much as I like Latour that whole discourse seemed like the academic community overestimating their cultural influence to a borderline delusional degree.
I had this take on Mr. Girl. I left a comment saying how it was such a good satire of the character he was playing to show how bad it is. But he replied to my comment letting me know it wasn't satire. Boy, was I sad.
I have neither watched this video nor the video it is about but I know it’s wrong and my refusal to engage with the text is definitely not going to come back and bite me
I'd agree with you. I think the rant was good. I get exactly what you're saying. The Dune and Alien cycles are special interests of mine and the discourse about these two worlds is crazy. People will loose their minds if you tell them Paul Atriedes is a villain (Jessica even worse), or that the first book is a clumsy attempt at subverting white saviour tropes. Never mind that the Alien series is a condemnation of capitalism. Both things that seem blatantly obvious to most of us. Yet there are some people who will jump trough all sorts of hoops to try to create a world where their favourite media doesn't challenge them
This vid and some comments make it sound like those "mental gymnastics" are an herculean effort, but talking from experience, they come as naturally as any other interpretation. What i find refreshing in little joel's take, is his willingness to believe this person experiences reality in a way that would lead to such an interpretation, to the point where he feels like he has to re-evaluate some of his more fundamental beliefs.
Yeah that's the blackpilling part. It's like you see him come all the way through to the other side and say "I'm so relieved I finally took the black pill". It's kind of dark lol
I also think he is SO FREAKING CUTE and I had NO IDEA he was going to blow me away with the most effective thoroughness, and validity made so concise that ive gone complete fangirl for the first time since Good Charlotte was poppin'
The fact is that little Joel is just a comedic interpretation of what a "big joel" is like hasn't escaped me. I too worry that many people might not be media literate enough to pick up on this truth.
No, you were right the first time. People can *try* to make these kinds of mental gymnastic leaps to justify liking the media they like, but they're just wrong. There is no one correct way to interpret media, but there are definitely incorrect ones.
it's like when someone makes a post on tumblr about how too many adults have poor reading comprehension in part because they refuse to read anything more challenging than fanfiction, made worse by the fact that fanfiction is constantly being published as original work these days, and then fandom people reblog it like "i agree that fanfiction has just as much merit as original published works
nah you don’t know these people. and tbf the people saying this are usually dumb teens. they might grow out of it, or become whatever the gen z equivalent of harry potter adults is
This is gonna be extremely millenial cringe of me to say. I believe fanfiction is unfairly demonized in this regard. Poorly written fanfiction is a symptom of a greater issue in our society. Complaining about fanfiction is kinda like complaining about Donald Trump. Yeah, it sucks, but getting rid of it isn't gonna solve the problem, because the problem runs much deeper than anyone would like to admit.
This comment reminded me of a video that occasionally stirs in my head. It was this video defending Notch by arguing that Notch is just a silly little goofball troll and actually means nothing he says.
I really love your videos Joel. I've been watching you since you made your first shrek video when I think I was still in highschool and it's been really nice to see you grow and expand into different topics. Hope you have fun at the eclipse if you're doing anything for that.
Hello Sizely Joel, I was wondering, when can we expect another hour long analysis of Adam Sandler's film Click? I feel there was a lot of untread ground for such a deep and philosophically provocative movie
4:30-4:58 I just had the sad realization that people who can't/refuse to understand things under the imbrella of lgbtqi/"woke" gender and identity politics probably feel exactly like this. Like, that feeling of "what is WRONG with people? Why cant they see whats going on?". The difference here beung that they're wrong in my personal opinion and Joel's right. Sometimes I wish theyd just ask "whats wrong with people? What am I missing?" instead because there are actual answers to that question which and led many incl myself towards allydom in the last 15years.
I think there's always at least one person who refuses to get it. They were born without the Get It Gene, and so they just can't get it now matter how much we try. We should love them as ourselves but never let them direct Superman movies.
4:50 I was very disappointed with society when I realized that rightwing politicians can just intentionally say the opposite of truth (not simply a lie, not simply a negation of truth like "gravity isn't pointing down", but the opposite of it like "gravity is pointing up" to the point where it's absurdly obvious), and roughly half of society will just accept it. When you read media, always remember that roughly half of the audience believes it means the opposite of what it means. The other half is either correct or ignorant or confused or just plain wrong in the pedestrial way of just being randomly wrong.
