For anyone who doesn't know, all the band members in 'The Commitments' were great singers in real life. The big guy with the ponytail - who we see here singing Mustang Sally - was discovered, in real life, one night when he was a bit drunk, and he was singing at a train station in Ireland. And that's the same way Rod Stewart was discovered back in the day!
When The Commitments came out, Alan Parker stated he was trying to recapture the original Fame (1980), where all the cast were genuinely musicians. Some of the grittiness of Fame, diminished due to the saccurine kids tv series. The Commitments still feels authentic to it's place and time, thanks to the legacy of the cast.
Andrew Strong is the real deal - loved the movie when it first come out, bought the tapes played them until they were chewed up by the tape player and now I've just found this little gem of a show!!
Thank you from Japan. This movie Blu-ray will be released at August 8th, 2024 in Japan at last. I will not wait my memory 33 years ago. Angeline Ball is still deva of soul music, I think.
Years ago came across this " nothing" movie on cable. Made me laugh at every scene, fascinated with characters. Watched it three times..bought it shortly after. Now,I watch and hope for another " gem" like this!
I was 8 when this came out. The film was so good to the point in 40 now I never forget them. "Dark end of the street" makes me cry 😢 I miss you so much, dad. I will see you again in the blink of an eye. I'm looking after my mum like I promised you I would.
Still one of the most awesome Music-Movies, my favourite together with the Blues Brothers. And the brillant Glen Hansard only played a small part and now he sings at the funeral of Shane MacGowan…
I loved this movie when it came out - not because it was the greatest movie ever but it was very different than anything I had seen before. Went to a bar on lower Greenville in Dallas Texas right around this time and they had a band that played Mustang Sally that night - so much fun!!!!! RIP to my friend Amy Gloddo that went with me that night. Thanks for posting this!
